After one of the most productive sessions of the Colorado legislature in years, last week I gave my staff here at ProgressNow Colorado a week’s worth of much-needed time off. It’s been a week of both relaxation and continued celebration as important bills you helped pass are signed into law by Gov. Jared Polis. From full-day kindergarten to equal pay and equal rights to saving money on health care and education, this was a year to remember.
2019 isn’t over yet. You may have read in the news that Colorado Republicans are targeting freshman Rep. Tom Sullivan of Centennial in a recall petition campaign. Rep. Sullivan’s son Alex was tragically murdered in the 2012 Aurora theater shooting. Tom Sullivan ran for office on a platform of gun safety, and was a prime sponsor of this year’s “red flag” bill to protect the public from gun violence by people suffering from a mental health crisis.
Tom Sullivan did exactly what he promised. And now Republicans who won’t accept that they lost the last election are trying to drive Sullivan from office for doing his job. We can’t the right wing succeed in overturning the will of the voters every time they don’t get their way. Priority #1 this week: sign up to support Rep. Tom Sullivan at SullivanStrong.com.
Once that’s done, check out more great ways to take action for the week of May 28:
Spotlight On Court Accompaniment
Going to court gives a lot of people anxiety, and going alone can mean missing important information or feeling really isolated and alone. When immigrants go to court, having accompaniment means that everyday people can work together to keep each other safe. We are looking to expand our nimble court accompaniment teams. Court accompaniers wear a pin with a white ribbon and go to ICE Check Ins in Centennial, Court at the GEO Immigration Detention Center, criminal court in a number of counties, or Federal Immigration Court down town. With a little bit of guidance and a lot of compassion, we invite you to join us.
