Trump in Damage Control Mode After "Send Her Back" Chants

As CNN reports, President Trump is now pretending that he disavows chants of “send her back” that broke out at a campaign rally in North Carolina Wednesday evening:

President Donald Trump claimed Thursday to be unhappy that his rally crowd broke out into chants of “send her back” as he denigrated a Democratic lawmaker he’d previously said should leave the US.

“I was not happy with it. I disagree with it. But again, I didn’t say that, they did,” Trump said at the White House a day after the rally, when a crowded arena in North Carolina began the thundering chant as he assailed Rep. Ilhan Omar, a freshman Minnesota Democrat.

Trump’s apparent disavowal came after expressions of concern from Republicans and outright outrage from Democrats, who accused the President of stoking racist sentiments among his white working class base…

…Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed to have attempted to stop the chant Wednesday night by resuming his speech, though he waited 12 seconds before speaking as the crowd loudly shouted the three words.

In the lull, Trump appeared to listen, letting the chant gain momentum, before resuming his speech, which continued with a litany of complaints against Omar and the other lawmakers.

Later in his remarks, Trump encouraged his audience to “tell them to leave” the US if they continue to criticize him.

Kudos to CNN for including the qualifier that Trump “claimed” to be unhappy with the chant. As Greg Sargent writes for the Washington Post: “As the president of the United States leads a domestic hate movement, the world is watching.”

  1. And in other developments, the "Mooch" picked a bad time to come out against racism:

The Palm Beach County GOP disinvited Anthony Scaramucci from addressing its annual fundraising event after the short-lived White House communications director criticized President Trump’s “racially charged” tweets saying four members of Congress who are women of color should leave the United States.

“He suggested the president’s comments were racist and that he was becoming a racist. Our board was infuriated,” said Michael A. Barnett, the Republican Party chairman in the county, home to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago getaway.

    1. Now that we know the "send her back" thing was rehearsed during the warm-up act (another Trump, of course), the Dumpster's disavowal rings even more hollow than it would have ordinarily.

      1. That's absolutely right, bs. Trump has indeed lowered us significantly.

What's more horrifying for me is how lowered we had to be in order to get Trump in the first place. The way the Overton window has changed during the past couple of decades have been downright shocking. As a result, the federal government has become full-on fascist.

There'll be some tweaks to American fascism here and there. Hell, Trump might even find a way to lose the White House in 2020. He is, after all, quite stupid. But the fascism is too deeply ingrained at this point. The United States as originally conceived is over.

I'm kinda old and in pretty poor health, so my "strategy" is clear and idiot-proof, though not what anyone would call satisfying: die before things get too horrific. In the meantime, I'll use whatever time I have left to slow the inexorable march of fascism here in my beloved adopted state.

In remember when Republicans were not actual, literal Nazis news:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R8QxCD6ir8

Things have gone mighty goddamn far off the rails when one is tempted to look back on 1981-1989 as the "good ol' days."

        1. Gotta admit the die before things get worse strategy is one I can't avoid.  But over my life of 74 years Ive seen tremendous progress.  Homosexual acts were crimes in all 50 states as recently as 1965!  Today, gays have the right to marry and, at least in some states, the right not to be fired.

Blacks my age were born into legal segregation.  I lived to see a mixed race president.

I also lived to see a woman presidential candidate get three million more votes than a fascist psychopath.  OKay, that story isn't finished yet.  But maybe Elizabeth, Kamala or Amy can finish the job.

I lived long enough to see at least a jury rigged national health care system in place with my party feuding only over how to make it better.

Only the designated hitter rule remains as a source of national dishonor.  But even there, we have the glory of living in a national league city.

Don't give up hope, beloved genghis.

The old guard dies, but never surrenders!

And when president Harris and vice president Buttagieg offer a prayer of thanks on our graves, we will know our struggle was not in vain!

          1. I admire the optimism, V. The hope ship done sailed for me a long time ago, but generalized disapprobation coupled with focused anger provide more than sufficient incentive to keep trundling on. 🙂

  2. I really don't believe this was "damage control mode." He just briefly hit pause, and lied about what actually happened at his rally (he lies about everything, remember). He flipflops from one statement to another, contradicting reality all along the way, just to keep opponents and the press off balance.

All that opponents and the press need to do is to directly – to his face – call him out on every lie, and every racist, cruel, authoritarian action. Every single one.

Tomorrow is a new day in Donald's authoritarianland! He'll be back to his same old bigoted playbook.

    1. Yup, as I said would happen – today Trump is back to making a full-throated defense of his fans who engaged in racist chants at his rally.

  3. https://thebulwark.com/send-her-back-send-her-back/

“The danger here—besides the obvious repulsiveness of the chant itself—is that this accelerating culture of political transgression is like a ratchet that can only turn one way. For a critical mass of conservatives, it is a sign that a given act is actually praiseworthy and brave if it draws condemnation from the despised left-wing media. “Send her back” is a chant that might make some cringe today—but once it’s been digested by the media cycle and the battle lines drawn, and it’s been repeated at rally after rally, it will become, in the minds of Trump’s fans, just another handy weapon for triggering the pearl-clutching libs.

At which point it will be stale. And they’ll need a new, more baldly indefensible, transgression. And so on, and on, and on.”
