I'm calling out EVERY Republican on this Blog...

  • by: SSG_Dan

…OK, I get that the leadership of your Party can give a shit about the Active Duty Military and Vets. That you’ll use a SM in uniform for any Photo-op possible, promise that you’ll take care of the troops and vote against their interests.

I’ve posted links to several slimey-ass things that the Republican leadership has done to vets, including taking money from a WWII Vet as a “loan” and then telling him to fuck off.

But now they’ve gone too far.

The Republicans in Congress have had no problems putting two wars on the Credit Card, blindly signed checks to Blackwater and Halliburton for fraudulent charges, and tossed $100 bills around Iraq like GOP Fundraisers at a lesbian strip club.

Now the carnage of these endless wars is coming back to haunt this country. I’ve ranted about PTSD and TBI and veteran suicide, and I’m trying my damnest to get Veterans Court going in Denver. One other important part of the puzzle is Veteran Homelessness.

Folks, there are Iraq and Afghanistan vets who are homeless in Denver. Some are living in their cars, some are “couch surfing” and others are living on the banks of the Platte river in the free sleeping bags I helped hand out at the last veteran standdown in October.

It’s a problem. A big one.

Now, there’s a bill sponsored by Sen Patty Murray (S.1237) that would devote $3.4 billion to Veteran Homelessness. On the 29th, Sen Murray asked for unanimous consent in passage of the bill. Sen Tom Colburn (R-OK) is objecting, due to the potential addition to the deficit.

Yes, the GOP has suddenly decided that deficit spending is bad. Somehow they didn’t notice during the war years, and they certainly didn’t notice that the Bush Tax cuts created a massive deficit. Sen Colburn was noticeably quiet about deficit concerns when we passed all the earlier war funding bill, so the fact he suddenly discovered his testicles on this bill is proof of the partisan bullshit going on in the senior leadership of his Party.

See for yourself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…

(For some reason, it won’t let me embed…)

Fine – if the GOP wants to play politics with Vets, that’s nothing new. But Sen Colburn, man up and put your ass in front of the podium and own up to your objection. Don’t be a sniveling candy-ass and ask “Dad” to put out your weak-ass arguments against the Bill. Let Sen Murray ask you why you hate Veterans.

This bill came out of committee with unanimous, bipartisan support. It helps vets right now who need it. But it seems that the senior leadership of the GOP feels it’s more important to score points than to take care of the vets it created with their wars.

So, my title says I’m calling out all the Republicans on this blog. I’ll even be respectful and actually use the name of your Party, something your members seem incapable of doing regarding the Democrats.

Call up your leadership – precinct, county, state, national WHATEVER. Tell them the one subject they don’t to pull this petty political BULLSHIT on is veterans. Tell them if they want to object to legislation regarding vets on this new-found fiscal responsibility, they need to PUT THEIR ASSES IN FRONT OF THE MIKE and own up to it.

If they mean it, and they actually have a plan, then they can go on the House or Senate floor AND SAY SO. No more hiding behind the Senate Majority Leader, Fox News or a Swiftboat group.

The Republican Leadership has created this crisis in Veteran’s care, and they need to own up to it. If you can find the unmitigated gall to apologize to BP, the GOP really needs to start apologizing to the US Military and Veterans.

NOW.

What should the Colorado GOP tell a Homeless Vet?

  1. is selective, at best. Since the beloved market doesn’t include veterans and collateral, they choose to be ignorant about it.

    You’re doing great work, Dan.

  2. It’s all become a game to them in Washington with no regard to the people who suffer from their inaction. And when we ask our Senators why the Senate can be stopped by one person, they answer Tradition.

  3. They have no problem with a bottomless budget for tanks and bombs, but heaven forbid we should want to help people at home, they suddenly get alligator arms and screech about deficits.

Yetta another stunning hypocrisy is that they care a whole lot about human life while it’s in the womb.  Once you’re out of the womb, or war for that matter, you’re on your own.

  4. Over here in Happy Valley (Grand Jct.) we have a shitload of Republicans, Libertarians, and Tea Partiers. We also have a very large homeless community here, which, of course, includes many veterans.

The “I’ve got mine, so fuck you” attitude is rampant here, evidenced by the actions of three Grand Junction cops who took it upon themselves to raid the valleys’ largest homeless camp at the confluence of the Gunnison and Colorado rivers.

They slashed tents, bicycle tires, and smashed food items belonging to the people who live there. They were fired and the City made restitution by replacing the damaged belongings.

The officers are now filing a lawsuit to get their jobs back and, believe it or not, are finding support in this community for the bullshit they perpetrated.

A sample comment from the most recent Daily Sentinel article on the subject.

Camping, with a beautiful view of the river, not paying taxes, getting free food and medical, being abel to do nothing all day long……….. sounds like a vacation to me, oh wait, it’s a way of life for some folks.  Guess I’ll have to keep” working” to get my days of leisure.

We as a society have become enablers to these folks.  Lets define how we are going to deal with this situation. and then help our ‘men in blue’ as they try to make’ in the moment’ decisions.

The thing that pisses me off is the disregard so many in this redneck town have for the HUMAN BEINGS who live out on the street. The assertion that they live as they do because they are just freeloaders is despicable. According to the loonytoon quoted above, being homeless is nothing but endless “days of leisure”. What a jerk.

  5. of the Presidency and both houses. Why don’t you call out the Dems? And who exactly pays for this multi billion dollar bill? Our taxes?  When are we going to say stop spending on credit?

Your complaint the GOP is finally touting fiscal conservatisim is a result of the people demanding the Dems and Reps stop spending on credit. I am sickened by the GOP old guard being not better than the tax and spend Dems. The madness has to stop.

For each ailment suffered by a veteran there is already available services for them. You have plenty of experience with those veterans who are homeless, alocholics, addicts, and suffering from PTSD. You also know from your experience that they chose not to “check in”. All of us who deal with the homeless understand the major problem is convincing them to seek and commit to lengthy treatment.

Your post does a disservice to vets. You make it sound as if our returning vets are struggling. Reality is the numbers you speak of reflect a very small percentage of our returning veterans. Being a veteran and having sat through two deployments of a son I can assure you I am a strong advocate for our veterans.  Services are available and funded to meet the current needs.

It is time both parties agree to quit running up the deficit. Although that will be tough when the Dems are moving to suspend the budget process.

    1. An earlier poster mentioned

The “I’ve got mine, so fuck you” attitude is rampant here

speaking about his area. Unfortunately, people with that attitude, like colawman, are everywhere.

I think, and correct me if I’m wrong Dan, the point was two-pronged:

      1. If ever there was a worthy reason to add to the deficit it would be to make sure ALL our veterans are completely taken care of. The number one soundbite used is “passing this debt on to our children and grandchildren..”. I don’t know about the rest of you but in my family, we were raised to revere and respect the sacrifice our veterans make. So this would be a debt my children would happily take on.

      2. If you’re going to block this bill, at least be a man and have the balls to stand at the podium and defend your decision. This cowardly bullshit move (from both sides of the aisle) of secret holds is disgusting. Last I checked not a single candidate runs on a platform of upholding the secret hold.

      1. .

Coburn had his name all over it.

        .

Senate rules say that, if you want to fund something new, you gotta propose a cut to something else to cover the costs.

I know, I know.  It’s routinely violated.  But since it’s a rule, why didn’t Senator Murray just hire a staffer to identify areas of the federal budget that could be cut to make room for her (our) priorities ?

Senator Murray engineered this piece of political theater in order to elicit the normal response from Senator Coburn, who routinely makes the same objections to almost any bill that isn’t funded as required by the rules.

Note that this isn’t a “hold” at all.  Coburn objected to this getting “unanimous consent,” because he didn’t consent.  That means that there must now be a vote.

A Hold, on the other hand, keeps the matter from coming up for a vote.

What could be more worthy than caring for homeless vets with children ?  This is sure to pass.  Of course, it would have sailed through without a vote if only Senator Murray had identified $3.4 Billion elsewhere in the budget to cut back.

        .

Note: I don’t mean to defend the GOP.  I find their performance and conduct as a party completely reprehensible.  But Senator Coburn and Jeff Flake are the token Fiscal Conservatives in Congress, and what they do is every bit as patriotic as what Doug Bruce does locally.

        .

        1. But do it in front of the mike, on the floor, and in front of the person sponsoring the bill.

Objections could’ve been raised in committee – and somehow all the Repubs on the Senate Veterans Committee thought the bill was a great idea there.

But the moment it hits the full floor and is on TV, Republicans are shocked, SHOCKED I SAY to see that it adds to the deficit.

          I call BULLSHIT, B-X. That’s why I’m pissed.

    2. 1)

Seems to me the Dems have control of the Presidency and both houses

Bullshit: you know damn well that the Dems are short of enough votes to meet the 60-vote threshold to accomplish anything in the Senate, unless you’ve spent the past 18 months living in a cave, on Mars, with earplugs, and no wi-fi.

      2)

It is time both parties agree to quit running up the deficit

I can’t say it better than Dan, but I’ll reiterate it: the R’s spent 8 yrs blowing up the deficit with tax cuts, military spending, and a Medicare prescription benefit, NONE of which was offset by additional revenue to make it deficit neutral. It’s a lamely transparent form of bullshit to:

       (a) ignore deficits when YOUR party wants to spend, but

       (b) suddenly claim newfound concern about deficits when the OTHER party has the ability to spend.

      1. You sententiously declared, now that now that the Dems have the presidency, “it is time both parties agree to quit running up the deficit.”  I have a similar idea: just before I go on vacation and lack internet access for a week, I’ll post “it is time for both of us, Raymond1 and CoLawMan, to stop posting for a week.”  That’s fair, right? Nothing wrong with saying that we should BOTH refrain from something the second I myself can’t do it…

    3. Ye Gods, CoLawman, you’re clueless. I posted the link to the text of the bill so everyone could see what it covered – it’s specifically for female homeless vets and for homeless vets with families.

The VA has NO facilities or programs set up to deal with this now – they’re rapidly trying to deal with female health and child care issues inside their own facilities.

On the broader issue of Vet homelessness, I get it’s a GOP talking point that “they want to be homeless” and that the simpleton answer is “they just need to come in.” According to the City & County of Denver Vet guy, there’s about 1200 vets who are homeless in the Metro area. 200 are the hard-core hunter-gatherers who fit will never come back. But what about the other 1000? They ARE at the VA, the C&C office, non-profits and faith-based groups, and they’re STILL living in cars or on the streets.

And we’re not even CLOSE to having enough services and funding for those vets who need it. If we did, it wouldn’t take 6-12 months for a preliminary claim to get filed with the VBA, or 2-6 YEARS for an appeal to get reviewed. Or that OIF/OEF vets have to wait a month or more to get PTSD counseling once we’ve started pumping drugs into their systems.

You want to see the human wreckage the Republicans (and some cowardly Democrats) created? Spend some time at the Denver VA, or if you have the guts, Co Springs.

      But spare me your drivel…

      1. that’s cute! He’s an expert, didn’t you catch that part? I will ashamedly admit my ignorance regarding this bill’s details but will proudly admit my support of veterans. Most of my support is done through charitable donations.

Unlike colawman, I wouldn’t dream of denying a problem exists. It’s unbelievable he thinks there is no “struggle” and no need for further funding. Apparently the fact these men, WOMEN, and their FAMILIES’ sacrifices are appreciated only up to a certain dollar figure.
