Republican Cory Gardner has amazed us here at Colorado Pols for his uncanny ability to commit self-inflicted wounds seemingly every couple of weeks. Just a few weeks after cluelessly attending a fundraiser organized in part by a major lobbyist from British Petroleum, the Gardner campaign sent out an email to supporters touting this fundraiser:
Honorable Mike Coffman
Honorable Doug Lamborn
Cordially Invite You To A Special Luncheon Honoring Cory Gardner
Republican Candidate – 4th District of Colorado
Republican Whip – Colorado General AssemblyWednesday, July 28th, 2010
12:00 PMBistro Bis at the Hotel George
15 E Street NW
Washington, DCSuggested Contribution: $1,000
Contributions should be made payable to Gardner for Congress and mailed to:
Gardner for Congress
507 Capitol Court NE, #100
Washington, DC 20002To RSVP, Please Contact Steve Gordon or Anne Burnley at (XXX) XXX-XXXX or via email to xxxxxxxx@stevegordon.com
Seems harmless, right?
The problem is that the return email address is corygardner@stevegordon.com. SteveGordon.com is the home of the lobbying and governmental affairs firm Total Spectrum. In other words, Gardner sent an email touting a fundraiser with the return email address pointing to his name @ a lobbying firm.
Genius.

Cory doesn’t actually work there at the lobbying firm, he’s one of their clients.
This email account was set up for email related to his account with the firm.
An email sent to BarackObama@stevegordin.com wouldn’t go to the President, but to the staff member at Total Spectrum who was handling the President’s account.
.
But the problem is how it looks.
Look, I can’t stand Gardner’s stated beliefs and policy positions, and I hope Markey crushes him like a bug in the election.
But:
The ONLY people who will even SEE this are those of us who are actively involved and who will almost certainly not be persuaded to change our minds because of an email address. Even if everyone in the district saw it, most would have no idea what it meant, and even more wouldn’t care.
There is no problem.
Pols – you need to temper your “hair on fire” approach to covering the Gardner campaign.
We get it. You don’t want him to win.
is in bed with lobbyists isn’t one that an insurgent candidate would want to foster. He might not be cashing checks from lobbyists but it isn’t reassuring given the penchant of Republicans to take the money and blame others.
MO money to influence Government for the privileged few…
look a puppet named Cory Gardner
Shameful, not really trying to cover his tracks.
That’s it?
Unless Cory Garnder is a lobbyist himself (*cough* like other noted Republican candidates cough) then there’s nothing to this…
Of silly, stupid, avoidable mistakes by Gardner’s campaign.
That’s the bar these days?
It’s okay if the Cory Gardner campaign’s fundraiser is organized by a corporate lobbying group, rather than by the campaign?
Both major parties are largely under the control and influence of corporatists, so why not make it official?
who want to believe the best of their fine, family values Republican candidates, why, on the other hand, make it official when you don’t have to? Not a huge deal, though. Just another minor demonstration of the cluelessnes that seems to be spreading like wild fire on the Colorado right. It may well make Colorado Dems the most successful in the nation come November.
Let’s keep that last sentence of yours a little more to ourselves. Not that I really think the knowledge will make the Colorado right-wingers any less clueless. It’s pretty much at epidemic proportions statewide. Not that this incident alone is epic, but it adds to the mountain that the R’s are working so hard to build.
The address doesn’t look bad, it looks good. It looks like the people hosting the fundraiser are trying to keep track of things.
You have “ads@coloradopols.com” on your page, this doesn’t make you look bad. Why should it be any different for anyone else with a domain?
But they’re lobbyists. How do you reconcile that with a faux-populist message?
