President Trump infamously said that his base was so loyal that he “could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue” in New York City and not lose any support. Last month, one of Trump’s attorneys made an honest-to-goodness real legal argument that Trump could indeed shoot someone and not be prosecuted, but would his supporters really stick with him in such an event?
Probably, as it turns out.
CNN New Day featured on Wednesday a panel of Pennsylvania voters from swing districts that was moderated by anchor Alisyn Camerota — and two had a jaw-dropping answer when asked what President Donald Trump could do to lose their vote.
The segment had fascinating insights into the minds of voters in a state that is considered critical for whoever will win the 2020 presidential election. CNN’s panel consisted of women who had switched from voting Republican to Democrat or vice versa in previous elections.
The last question in the segment was put to Crystal, who was the most ardently pro-Trump. Camerota asked “Crystal, is there anything he could do that would make you not vote for him?”
Crystal replied “No.”
Camerota then cited an infamous hypothetical scenario once proposed by Trump during the 2016 election, asking “If he shot someone on 5th avenue, would you vote for him?”
Another (unidentified) panelist interjected: “You’d have to know why he shot him.” Crystal agreed, saying, “Yeah, why did he shoot him?” [Pols emphasis]
“You’d have to know why he shot him.”
There’s probably a lesson in here somewhere. We’ll be sure to let you know if we figure it out.

I do believe (hope) that they would desert him if he raped a 13-year-old girl and then shot her to prevent her testifying against him.
And there you have it … on air confirmation there is a Trump cult of true believers. Unreachable by discussion or argument. Short of deprogramming or other intrusive psychological techniques, I'm not certain what can be done.
It does sway me to find and support a Democratic candidate who can drive turnout. To find and support organizations registering new voters and preparing to GOTV a year from now.
"… find and support a Democratic candidate who can drive turnout."
Keep us posted if you find someone
I would say the same thing. If someone was charging him with a knife and he was defending himself – then that's reasonable. Context is everything.
Really David, because like Trump, you want to brag that you have a messianic cult of followers? If someone was charging Trump with a knife, his ever-present, Secret Service detail-for-life would do any shooting necessary.
If Trump had a gun, he’d just be doing it for the pure thrill.
My point is it's reasonable to ask for context.
And, on that note, in the context of Ttump’s statement, . . .
. . . what The Chosen One was saying was that his supporters would let him get away with murder. (i.e., it had absolutely nothing to do with self-defense in the face of a hypothetical knife-wielding assailant.)
And, he was broken-calendar right about those somethings.
Context. Keep it in mind. Good point. Eventually.
Well, yeah. Context is everything. If the shootee had the temerity to suggest that Donnie and his piece of shit father paid that gargantuan housing discrimination settlement because they actually committed housing discrimination, then surely the shooting would be justified.
“a panel of Pennsylvania voters from swing districts”
As James Carville once noted, Pennsylvania is Philadelphia in the east, Pittsburgh in the west, and Alabama in between.
Not quite accurate since Penn State University is roughly in the middle.
State College is indeed somewhat less hickish than the rest of central Pa.
Trump, as always, makes his priorities crystal clear:
