What percentage of the population will contract coronavirus? Estimates have ranged from a low of 20% (per a Congressional staff briefing this week) to 70% per Angela Merkel. And every guess in between, all by pretty respected institutions. So, could someone explain South Korea to me? South Korea is considered the best country to date in handling the crisis. They are testing over 10,000 per day, including drive-up testing centers. And, now it is thought that they have "passed the peak". That peak is at about 8,000 cases out of a population of 52 million. That represents about 2 one hundredths of one percent of the population. And, they are past their peak?? And, all they seem to have done is test the population and get those found to be infected into quarantine?
Maybe. Just maybe. Just a little bit maybe, this pandemic has been overblown? Is there a responsible journalist out there who could investigate this?
Then there is Italy where there were so many cases that they had to triage the ventilators and basically tell some people that they couldn't be helped and who later died. There are also reports out of Iran of mass graves there are so many dead. Would you rather be South Korea or Iran?
Maybe. Just maybe . . .
. . . things will be better in those countries with competent governance, whose leadership has relied upon rational thought and science to prepare and react?
Really glad to hear about South Korea — taking action and keeping things under control. But, as they say, elections have consequences, so I can’t help but wonder still if being “exceptional” doesn’t mean that we’re not going to be exceptionally stupid (i.e., sorta’ fucked) heere?
There was a piece this morning on Create TV about the Influenza outbreak in 1918.
It killed hundreds of thousands of Americans. We didn’t even know what a virus was…couldn’t see ’em. Couldn’t stop it.
It finally ran out of people it could kill and the pandemic eased.
We are better off today.
Spanish flu (H1N1)
Deaths worldwide estimated from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million.
Reports were widely under reported – bad for morale while the global rich were trying to fight a war to divide the colonies and global resources.
It definitely exists- if nowhere else, it's frozen in the arctic. At least it was.
There have been at least three documented attempts to weaponize it, the last was after 2010 and reported in the NYT.
WOTD from Brad De Long at Grasping Reality "Coronavirus"
If the infection rate (R0)is below one person each week, then the virus dies out. Two per week doubles each week, so 100 infected people in Colorado results in 25,600 other in two months… Italy.
If 2% of people in Washington state are infected, then 5,000 people at a basketball game are exposed to 100 sick people over the course of two hours.
If you have pre-existing conditions in heart or lungs or immune system problems, your death rate goes way up. That is why death rates among people over 80 is on the order of 18%. Age 70 – 80, is 10%
Estimates of 20 million deaths worldwide.
30-70% of people will get the Corona virus. Half will not show significant symptoms. If the exposure rate sky-rockets, we run out of hospital beds and ventilators. If we can slow the rate, then hospital beds can be turned over to the next batch of sick people.
Are these numbers are too high or too low?
And Needy Amin can't read it off the Teleprompter without pausing between Corona…..and…..Virus.
Ohio governor states over 100,000 infected in Ohio.
Good thing they reliably vote R now.
South Korea is not just testing … they are following up every positive and presumptive positive case with tracking to identify anyone who may have been in contact, and testing them. That follow-up uses not only self-reporting, but also credit card & other electronic transaction, phone tracking, vehicle tracking, and any government information available (including some street cameras). They are issuing “official emergency alerts on his cellphone every time a new coronavirus case is reported in his area. The messages identify where the patient had been prior to detection and at what time; they urge anyone who might have crossed paths with the individual to get tested immediately.” They encourage everyone to stay inside as much as possible and minimize contact with anyone from outside. They have issued extensive advice on hygienic cleaning of hands and frequently touched surfaces.
Their President “ordered all state agencies to operate around the clock and pledged $25 billion to deal with the crisis.” Our CDC is reporting cases at noon Monday through Friday, based on numbers generated on the previous day at 4 pm, and the last I heard, people in Congress were arguing about if $8 billion was too much (for a country 5 or 6 times the population and much, much bigger geographically).
US experience so far this month — known cases are going up about 35% per day, and deaths are running about 2.5% of over overall cases.
And there are lots of responsible journalists covering this. As are public health authorities. As are bio-statisticians. As are doctors. Pick the flavor you like and look around (outside the right-wing bubble — but even there, some responsible journalism is starting to sneak into the coverage).
#WhiteProsperityJesus is quite pleased with his sheeple….
Survey: White Evangelicals See Trump As 'Honest' And 'Morally Upstanding'
A black sheep stepped to the microphone and stated the obvious:
Influential Evangelical Calls Out Trump’s ‘Sloppy & Dangerous’ Coronavirus Lies
Michael, please tell me that was actually from The Onion.
Nope
NBA, NHL , PGA, NCAA, etc, etc, etc
First lady of Canada, the Hankses, etc
But that guy – he has a perfect immune system so he
is afraidhas no need to get tested.Thank god his bone spurs aren't acting up.

Wolffe has been wrong before.
And he doesn't vote in a southern state.
But still – I can hope

well "perfect" is a high bar.
A lot of voters are more nervous about Bernie as president
than the virus.
