What Dave Schultheis and Scott Tipton Have in Common

  • by: Colorado Pols

9/11 argumentum ad nauseum, as the Grand Junction Sentinel’s Gary Harmon reports:

The rematch between incumbent U.S. Rep John Salazar, D-Colo., and Republican businessman Scott Tipton turned scrappy and ill-tempered early on in their first debate Saturday night.

“John Salazar, it’s time to come home,” Tipton said as he opened the debate. “It’s 9/11. Let’s roll.” [Pols emphasis]

…Tipton said his remark about his candidacy and the anniversary of Sept. 11 was the result of excitement about the debate.

Salazar repeatedly attacked Tipton for his call to reduce federal spending by 50 percent, questioning Tipton’s proposals for water projects, federal payments to local governments and other expenditures.

We’ve spoken previously about Scott Tipton’s laughably simplistic “half off government” proposal, and it’s plenty to lampoon all by itself–but this eye-rolling, stereotypical reference to 9/11 is exactly what we mean when we hold up Tipton as a textbook example of “Why Republicans Lose.”

You’d think Jane Norton’s smashing success exploiting 9/11 would have made Tipton more careful, but it’s not the first time his elocution worked against his best interests.

  1. isn’t the definition of insanity “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?”

I haven’t seen any difference in the terms of campaign strategy from Tipton. It’s like it’s 2008 all over again.

    1. it is a perversion of the language. Like letting tax cuts expire is “raising taxes” but getting rid of Social Security is just an exercise in fiscal responsibility.

  2. How do you explain that he is ahead in the polls and favored to win?

What is Salazar doing that is worse?

    Nate Silver has Tipton winning.

Is it just because the district is more Republican leaning than anytime in the last 5 years or is there something else in play?

      1. It’s true that 538 has CO-3 going to Tipton.  I think it’s going to change by election time – IF Salazar does any campaigning.  Of course, with Tipton helping him out, who needs friends?

          1. Here are some numbers to think about:

            CD -03 numbers       Nov 08    Aug 10

            Registerd Reps:      34.8%     37.7%

            Registered Dems:   32.8%     33.3%

            Unaffiliated:            31.8      28.2%

Salazar over came a 2% disadvanage when everything was breaking for Dems in 08.  Now he has a 4.4% disadvantage and to be kind things don’t appear to be breaking for the Dems.

            1. If they were, we never would have had Democrats representing District 55 as we have had for 12 of the last 22 years.

Nonetheless, your daily prognostications are welcome for what they are–pure shilling bullshit.

  3. Salazar has run a lackadaisical campaign and has had very poor staff support.

It’s not too late.  Yet, this race never should have been close. Tipton was considered a long shot and this race would not have even been targeted had Salazar worked hard and organized a strong campaign.

  4. Pols, if you’re going to attack Tipton for caring that it was 9/11 anniversary enough to mention it as a congressional candidate, you’re going to have to explain how Democrats have done a THING to keep Americans safe since 9/11.

Because you haven’t, all the things you hate that Republicans did to keep us safe are why. And not even Obama will take them back now that he is president!

Does that tell you something, Dhimmis?

          1. Not a complete list, not in a particular order

            1. USA PATRIOT Act

            2. Invasion of Afghanistan

            3. Homeland Security reorganization

            4. NSA terrorist surveillance

            5. Fighting Clinton’s dismantling of the military

            6. Winning the Cold War (maybe #1 in importance)

            7. Not appeasing our enemies to begin with (also maybe #1)

I’m thinking of more, perhaps my fellow conservatives can help me out.

            1. 1. Took away constitutional rights

              2. Not a threat to our freedom. To our life and limb, sure, but they only threatened our freedom in their ability to scare Bush and Congress into passing the Patriot act.

              3. The jury’s still out on that one.

              4. See 1.

              5. That was the GOP congress’s doing; besides, our military was still more than a match for anyone else. Freedom not harmed in the least.

              6. Joint effort. Sorry, but Reagan doesn’t get sole credit for that.

              7. You just made that up.

            2. You started this conversation asking about what Democrats have done since 9/11. And then to prove that Republicans have done more, you said that “winning the Cold War” was “maybe #1 in importance.”

But what about the Spanish-American War?

    1. I love how GOP’ers like you conveniently forget that 9/11 occurred during Bush’s watch, and we have not had anything remotely like it occur since.

Meanwhile, Republican chickenhawks with their “Ground Zero Mosque” and “Burn the Korans” stupidities are directly causing American servicemen to die in Afghanistan. Shame on you.

  5. It appears that John Salazar is in danger of losing to an undistinguished brick-a-brac salesman that he beat by nearly two to one just four years ago.

    What a year!

Does anyone in the District have any intell on what’s going on in that part of Colorado? How is Salazar reacting? Is he up on TV?  Has he gone negative yet?

Is Scott Tipton for real or does he still have the deer in the headlights look?

As to the “let’s roll” comment.  It was in incredibly poor taste and never should have been made.

    1. And Tipton appears to be the darling of the people who are too cheap to subscribe to the Daily Sentinel.

Tipton is definitely real.  That’s bad for him.  Knowing him is what makes him unelectable.

If you think that Salazar will lose Pueblo and the San Luis Valley, and thereby lose CD-3, you don’t know CD-3.

  6. For a sleazy, second-rate politician like Scott Tipton to try to appropriate and use for political purposes the brave and noble phrase by the folks on United 93 is nothing less than disgusting.

    What a douchebag.
