Minority Leader Neville, Who's The "Tyrant" Now?

  • by: Colorado Pols

SUNDAY UPDATE: Call him President Backpedal, reports Politico:

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he would not be quarantining New York City’s metro area, which has emerged as the nation’s largest hot spot for the coronavirus, after floating the idea earlier in the day…

Federal law gives the president and the federal government vast emergency powers in a pandemic, [Pols emphasis] including the ability to quarantine people to slow the spread of disease between states. But it’s not clear how the federal government would enforce what Trump described, and Cuomo and others questioned whether it would be legal.

Just remember, folks–when Donald Trump breaks out the “vast emergency powers,” it’s heroic. Gov. Jared Polis is a tyrant, but obviously Trump is not. Obviously!

—–

President Donald Trump.

NBC News reports, look out Gov. Jared Polis! There’s a new dictator in town:

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he was considering an “enforceable quarantine” in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut area due to the coronavirus outbreak, saying the decision could come as soon as later in the day.

“Some people would like to see New York quarantined because it’s a hot spot. New York, New Jersey, maybe one or two other places. Certain parts of Connecticut quarantined,” Trump said as he left the White House en route of Norfolk, Va. to see off the USNS Comfort, a Navy hospital ship that is headed to New York to provide extra hospital space to help fight the outbreak.

“I am thinking about that right now. We might not have to do it but there’s a possibility that sometime today we’ll do a quarantine, short term, two weeks, on New York. Probably New Jersey, certain parts of Connecticut,” Trump continued.

Now before you get your libertarian britches in a twist over what exactly an “enforceable quarantine” consists of, fear not–we have no doubt that the disgraceful number of Colorado Republicans who lashed out at Gov. Polis for his statewide stay-at-home order here in Colorado this week are busy right now working up an explanation for why Polis’ order is “tyranny,” but President Donald Trump shutting down three East Coast states equivalently Makes America Great Again™. We’re guessing it will fall somewhere between “East Coast libs have it coming” and “foreigners in New York all kiss each other.”

Much like Cory Gardner twisting into a pretzel to explain why the 2020 stimulus he’s proud of is nothing like the 2009 stimulus he rhetorically crucified President Barack Obama for, sometimes it would be better to just walk it back already. But somehow we doubt Gov. Polis’ excitable critics will be able to do so.

  1. As I have posted before, in early 1999, House Speaker Newt Gingrich stepped down as speaker after leading the Republicans to a wipe-out in the U.S. House in the 1998 mid-terms. Gingrich ultimately resigned his House seat.

Colorado House minority leader Patrick Neville led our Republican party to an equally big wipe-out in the 2018 mid-terms. Still waiting on Mr. Neville to “man-up,” acknowledge his large role in our party’s defeat, and at least step down as minority leader.

  2. Maybe the Neville brood could take a gander at what Pastor Ted is blogging about today?  I’m not generally prone to quote the pastor, but when he’s right on something he’s right:  [paraphrasing] God gave you a brain and critical thinking skills.  Use them.

    COVID-19: Where is God?

There are a few situations here on the Earth where God has set in motion certain events that cannot be adjusted by us. An example would be the way God used Pharaoh with the nation of Israel in the Old Testament. When we teach these Scriptures, we emphasize God’s sovereignty which may confuse people like Christopher, who asked the questions above, because they think God personally controls and causes everything that happens on the Earth. That’s not so.

Here on the Earth, as I mentioned, we have natural law—which has led to the development of Covid-19. It’s not spiritual; it’s a product of natural law. The purpose of Science is to learn how God created our world and how to work with it so we’ll be better off. God has given us our intellects to enable us to do this. Thus, we appreciate medical science and the other schools of thought that use natural law to keep us safer when traveling, give us better diets, and help us live quality lives.

  3. Did POTUS hit his 140 character limit with that tweet?  Me thinks he forgot (at least) one hot spot: Mar-a-lago

On a Saturday Night in Florida, a Presidential Party Became a Coronavirus Hot Zone

WASHINGTON — The lights were low and the disco balls spinning as a cake with a fiery sparkler shooting flames into the air was brought out to a robust rendition of “Happy Birthday,” joined by President Trump. The birthday girl, Kimberly Guilfoyle, the girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr., then pumped her fist in the air and called out, “Four more years!”

It was a lavish, festive, carefree Saturday evening at Mar-a-Lago a week ago in what in hindsight now seems like a last hurrah for the end of one era and the beginning of another. In the days since then, the presidential estate in Florida has become something of a coronavirus hot zone. A growing number of Mar-a-Lago guests from last weekend have said they are infected or put themselves into quarantine.

    1. And, it’s really nice to see that the usual and really  “essential” functions of the Orange government are continuing and functioning . . .

Tribe That Drew Trump's Fire Over Casino Plan Loses Its Reservation Status

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe got a frightening notice from the Trump administration just as residents are grappling with the devastating impact of COVID-19.

  4. History buffs: Has there been another leader in history who has used a plague or natural disaster to take revenge on perceived “enemies” and consolidate his/her power?

If so, how does history regard that leader now?

      1. A careful definition of "plague" might exclude some events

But it should go along with " "Buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own."

Plenty of fortunes were made during or as a result of great misfortune.
And people subsequently admire or even worship the fortune and those who control it.

Not everyone. Dennis of the anarcho-syndicalist commune doesn't because he understands what Bob Reich, Howard Zinn, President Lincoln and others understood: labor is superior and prior to capital. And labor tends to take the plagues and natural disasters hard no matter who is in leadership.

That said – VHT under $145 or XBI under 70 should work well. (until US goes single payer, then dump VHT)

            1. I looked them up out of curiosity — VHT is healthcare/hospitals index fund, and XBI is a biotech fund.  I'd just stick with plain vanilla S&P 500 index funds for the long haul and let the market sort out the winners and losers.

              1. There are people who believe the healthcare sector will overperform relative to other parts of the S&P

And people like me already believe big pharma runs the world.

          1. It goes to the question of who is the "leader"and what "power" there is to consolidate.

Is the leader that matters the elected or inherited one with the title?

Or is it the uber rich? Assuming, of course, they are not the same.
Panama Papers and other sources suggest there is a lot of overlap even where we necessarily wouldn't expect it.

  5. I'm wondering how much the Colorado RWNJ coalition is sponsored/supported by the Republican elite family from Wisconsin, the Uihleins.

Mrs. Uihlein, President of the Uline corporation, recently sent a missive to every member of the Illinois Legislature:

While you may think the government enforced closing of events, schools, etc. is helping prevent the spread of this infection, you are impacting local, state and national economies and adding unnecessary panic and fear in the American people.

What happens in 2 weeks? Are you willing to indefinitely close institutions? At what point do we go back to our normal lives? This has been a huge disruption.

    Sound familiar?
