We don’t even know what to say here. From Think Progress:
One shocking moment at the NFRW meeting involved a special event called “The Southern Experience.” In this event, attendees dressed in clothing reminiscent of the Civil War and the antebellum South. As FITS News reports, South Carolina Senate President Glenn McConnell (R) participated in the event by dressing up as a Confederate General, and at many points posed with African Americans dressed as slaves.
Nobody thought this might be a bad idea? Really?

and pound all the lefties for playing the race card if we dare to criticize, can we all agree that allowing such a picture to be out there in the world was incredibly stupid, if nothing else?
history re-enactments??!!
Forget the racism aspect.. where’s the dignity and self awareness to distance yourself from anything so dorky.
shiver
…and we need to be mindful of our history
Histroy re-enactments rate just below waiting in line for Star Wars Phantom Menace in your Darth Maul costume on the “I need a social life” scale.
And sorry, but people who pick and choose which part of history is to be celebrated and which part is to bulldozed over are far from mindful.
I’m talking about pols who should be mindful of the kind of images they really want to be out there in the this instant media saturation age, knowing that people are just looking for stuff to make a fuss over and having seen so many other pols go through these dust ups. My comment is not on the PC or anything other than they ought to know that this kind of stuff tends to come back and bite them. It sucks up attention they might prefer to have focused elsewhere and it’s so easily avoidable. That’s all.
I was mearly refudiating Libertads point that this is a way of being “mindful of history”
I’m more from the POV that this situation screams all sorts of “poor taste”. Civil War re-enactments are a bit silly and odd to begin with imo, so some pol exhibiting poor judgement whilst participating isn’t quite a far stretch.
I.e., I was being snarky. you’re on of my favorite peeps on here BC. Now, go atone for mis-interpreting me ;P
I may have gotten who was saying what a bit confused in that thread. One thing for sure. If there were a re-enactment of the WWII shipping of Jews to death camps, I’m petty sure I’d want to a avoid appearing in an after party picture in bedraggled Jew costume posing all smiles with a smiley guy in an SS uniform in front of a cattle car.
.
with all its warts,
are doomed to read about it on an opponent’s website.
.
1. Do not agree to speak from a podium bedecked with the Confederate flag. (Tom Tancredo, take note.)
2. Do not join in singing “Dixie” after you’ve finished speaking before a crowd in South Carolina. (Tom Tancredo, take note.)
3. If and when you learn that a speaking engagement of yours has been sponsored by a white secessionist group, bow out. (Tom Tancredo, take note.)
4. Do not speak before a crowd with a goodly portion wearing Confederate battle dress. (Tom Tancredo, take note.)
But hey, at least Tom Tancredo hasn’t shown up wearing a Confederate uniform himself, with actor “slaves” hired for the occasion.
Yet.
Now you understand why he said that he wouldn’t leave the race even if Abe Lincoln was on the republican ticket. My response: DUH.
It is a mistake to believe that tancredo’s confederacy sympathies do not buy him votes.
But that looks like a Union uniform to me. Maybe he was freeing the slaves. All would be forgiven, right? RIGHT? Damn.
You’re right. Even though it still looks blue to me.
There was quite of bit of mixing of colors early and then as the Confederates uniforms wore out or were destroyed they would use whatever they could, including from those who would never need a uniform again.
What I remember most vividly was that the boots of dead soldiers were eagerly sought in the trenches.
May God protect us all from the glory of war.
horrible story that you just can’t put down
They got black people to join in the fun, so it can’t possibly be racist, right?
Couldn’t they have come as Frederick Douglas or Crispus Attucks?
I wish I had an understanding why some Black people still feel the need to be “approved of” by White people. There is no reason for anyone Black to dress up as a slave unless it is for a Spielberg movie. I guess it helps gets votes…
How many Jewish people do you see enacting the holocaust?
Even if it helps to educate a new generation about what this country put a whole race through? Sometimes words aren’t as effective as seeing it play out in front of you. Seeing what they wore, how they acted, living conditions, etc.
I can certainly understand why some African Americans choose to take on these roles. They don’t want their horrific history relegated to the stale words of a history book. Just more boring facts for kids to learn in order to pass U.S. History. Movies have done a fairly good job of capturing the hellish conditions of slavery, but nothing compares with seeing it with your own eyes.
As for whether Jews choose to do the same, I honestly don’t know whether they do or not. I doubt they would choose to re-enact the holocaust, but they may choose Anne Frank’s attic to re-enact or other similar moments.
This wasn’t in a museum; it sounds like this was at a party, for Christ’s sake.
I don’t know whether I’d dress up like a slave for any reason, if I were black. I darn sure wouldn’t do it for the entertainment of white folks at a National Federation of Republican Women party.
Not disagreeing with anything else you say, though.
Col. Clink, Sgt. Schultz, and Robert Clary (LeBeau, who actually spent time in a concentration camp).
about South Carolina here. This will likely elevate his stature…
but neither do I think we should celebrate such a disgraceful period in history with celebratory photo ops.
……you may believe one Senator(For better or worst) could make a difference. (Depending on whose at the other end of the debate.)
I don’t advocate violence on the Senate floor in any manner, such as cane-beating, horse whipping, fist fighting, or object throwing.
Doug Bruce crowd with that kind of fraidy-cat attitude.
