But of course it's all about the children

When a school district cuts the librarians out of the budget, volunteer parents step in to keep the school libraries open.  But that doesn’t sit well with the Massachusetts Teachers Association.  

From the Boston Herald:

The regional school system cut librarians from the budget in order to keep more teachers on staff. Parents stepped up to volunteer at the libraries so students could keep studying. But as the Boston Globe reported, “the volunteer effort ended on Oct. 5 – the same day it began – after volunteers were warned by a staff member that a grievance was being filed.”

It seems that if a union member, adding to the union coffers, can’t fill the position, then it should remain vacant.  No matter what damage it does to the education of the children.

Of course the usual suspects are blamed by the union.

Union supporters blame tight-fisted taxpayers unwilling to pay their fair share. What a shame, they moan, that skinflint homeowners won’t pony up to pay Marian the Librarian’s salary.

But,

In fact Raynham and Bridgewater passed Prop 2 overrides this year. And the budget for the school system has jumped from $32 million to nearly $60 million in a decade, while enrollment remained flat.

So, school district cuts librarians from budget.  Concerned parents volunteer to keep libraries open at no pay.  Union comes down on parents like a ton of bricks.  Yep those kids are lucky the union cares about their education.

  2. Op ed pieces are often full of unverifiable bullshit, not to mention that they have no obligation to report all the facts, so as a rule they can’t be taken as proof that anything happened.

    Find some links to some actual news stories and get back to us, please.

        1. It doesn’t much matter what FOX News vs. MSNBC vs. CNN looks like when during some of the highest ratings days in history (thanks to the Chilean mine rescue) the total viewership of all three is about 1% of the population.

        3. Because if it’s something like ratings = credibility, let me remind you that CBS News with Dan Rather was once the most watched TV news program in America.

      Librarian positions were cut from the middle schools in both towns this year and their salaries channeled into hiring teachers to address bulging class sizes. Volunteer organizations stepped in to pick up the slack – only to be surprised and disappointed by threats of a labor complaint.

      Anita Newman, president of the Bridgewater Raynham Education Association, last week confirmed the union’s plan to file a grievance with school principals. All schools whose libraries are being kept open by volunteers would be part of the grievance, she said.

      Patricia Riley, president of Raynham’s volunteer group RAVE and a member of the regional school committee, said about 20 volunteers stepped up to work in the Raynham Middle School library after the librarian position was cut. But the volunteer effort ended on Oct. 5 – the same day it began – after volunteers were warned by a staff member that a grievance was being filed.

      “I think we would all love to see our school libraries staffed with full-time librarians,” said a frustrated Riley. “Our volunteers were merely there to keep the libraries open for the students to use. They were not going to be replacing any librarians or school personnel who were not rehired. And they certainly weren’t going to be teaching library science.”

      Different paper, same story, but I’m sure you’ll find some fault here as well.  After all, if you don’t like reality, just find some reason to deny it.

      1. Don’t you think it’s fair to dismiss Murdoch’s organizations after Shirley Sherrod? Or were you one of the few righties still tuning into CBS News after the Bush National Guard debacle?

        I just want you to find reliable sources before you go posting stuff like this. I know full well that you wouldn’t trust Olbermann, Moore, or Maddow as a source if I posted a diary about some GOP outrage; I just want you to respect that we on the left likewise won’t just trust some hard right hack in the employ of Rupert Murdoch.

        Thank you for finding an actual, reasonable news link for this. Now I would like you to please apologize for getting all snippy, or at the very least remember who you’re dealing with when you reply to me. I respect you, and I don’t think I’m asking too much to ask for respect in return.

        Now then, yes, it sucks that this one union is doing this. Is there a good reason for taking this as evidence that teacher’s unions are all bad all the time?

        1. But it seems to be the norm around here anymore to be nasty.  All the crap flinging going on is getting to me I guess.  And maybe teachers unions are not bad all the time, but this one is certainly misbehaving.

          1. I consider you to be one of the good guys here, someone I could actually have a beer with despite our pretty polar opposite views on things. Someone I can agree to disagree with, unlike certain other polsters who just want to tangle and repeat the talking points they heard someone on TV say.

            I’ll keep this story in mind and we’ll see if it repeats itself around the country.
