Solomon Burke died last weekend, on an airplane on his way to Amsterdam to perform.
He was, in my opinion, the greatest soul singer of all time, a model for those who came after him. He put emotion into a song as few have ever done.
Here’s one of his songs that was used in the soundtrack of Dirty Dancing. You can hear the roots of both Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson.
This one is from later in life. I’d like to dedicate it to my daughter. It’s hard to be the flesh and blood that’s left behind.
I had a two or three year Solomon Burke phase when I was in college. What a monster (in the best possible sense).
The only thing I love more than music is discovering music I haven’t heard. I confess that I was expecting to like this. I’m nearly in tears over here and I don’t even know why.
Thank you.
Music should make you happy, not cry.
I’ll shed the tears, It’s my cross to bear.
…Ten years ago this week, the USS Cole was attacked by Al Qaeda terrorists while docked in Yemen. Despite the massive hole blown in the side of the ship, the crew fought hard to save her and kept her afloat.
When the ship was towed out of harbor, the Captain ordered “patriotic” music played over the ship’s sound system, thinking that it would boost morale. Someone snuck in this Kid Rock song, which probably did boost their morale – and flipped a sonic bird to the terrorists who tried to kill them.
By the way, that damn socialist liberal radio network did a DAMN FINE story on the USS Cole this week:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetw…
covering Bill Withers ” I can’t write left handed “, a song about the tragic consequences of war, written during Vietnam. It is part story, part song – Legend has an amazing soulful voice and of course the roots kill it – needless to say they are all at the top of their game:
Beautiful
Thanks for the Woody Guthrie.
I’m gonna tell you fascists
You may be surprised
The people in this world
Are getting organized
You’re bound to lose
You fascists bound to lose
Race hatred cannot stop us
This one thing we know
Your poll tax and Jim Crow
And greed has got to go
You’re bound to lose
You fascists bound to lose.
All of you fascists bound to lose:
I said, all of you fascists bound to lose:
Yes sir, all of you fascists bound to lose:
You’re bound to lose! You fascists:
Bound to lose!
People of every color
Marching side to side
Marching ‘cross these fields
Where a million fascists dies
You’re bound to lose
You fascists bound to lose!
I’m going into this battle
And take my union gun
We’ll end this world of slavery
Before this battle’s won
You’re bound to lose
You fascists bound to lose!
I couldn’t find my favorite of Django here because I don’t know the name. I know him off of an old record a blues player gave me for my seventh birthday. The label was too old and used to read. Anyway, fingers! Who needs ’em?
And Honeysuckle Rose. Which I will still not do since it’s my ring tone. I’m waiting for a call before I can enjoy the weekend and lunge for the damn phone every time the video comes up.
Django just makes me happy.
I have a friend who was a guitar tech for a local music store. He listened to Django all day.
How a guy with only three fingers could play like that was beyond both of us.
9. 8 worked close to normal.
yeah, almost 8 and 1/2 minutes is “forever.” I can hardly believe it’s been 15 years (16).
Did I miss it? Is it due today? Shouldn’t we have it now that it’s in the black hole of the media cycle (Friday p.m.)?
But I won’t link to the Greeley Tribune as the source.
I bet you thought you were posting to a different thread.
Same thing happened to me in a different diary.
