Final U.S. Senate Debate Open Thread

  • by: Colorado Pols

Airing tonight at 6PM on Denver’s KCNC CBS 4. To start off our discussion this evening, here’s an amusing mashup of a number of GOP candidate Ken Buck’s more memorable statements–we were anonymously forwarded just ahead of gametime:

Yes, it’s not really meant to be flattering, but we think it’s instructive to post this 40 minutes before debate time–perhaps just in time for somebody in Camp Buck to slip him a list of things not to say.

May the fewest “d’ohs” win!

      1. But I really dislike the Giants (you have to if you’re a true Rockies fan), and the only team I like less than the Yankees is the Phillies.

Luckily they played a series to see who gets the honor of being crushed by the Rangers, who I do like.  If it’s not the Rockies, or the Twins, I’m glad Josh Hamilton, Michael Young, Ron Washington, and a bunch of other guys I highly respect will get their chance.  Besides, it’s about time one of these annual deadline moves for Cliff Lee resulted in a title…

        1. As I watched today, I waited with great anticipation for an illegal to canvas our place.

          illegal immigrants canvassing for votes

SEATTLE (AP) – When Maria Gianni is knocking on voters’ doors, she’s not bashful about telling people she is in the country illegally. She knows it’s a risk to advertise to strangers that she’s here illegally-but one worth taking in what she sees as a crucial election.

The 42-year-old is one of dozens of volunteers-many of them illegal immigrants-canvassing neighborhoods in the Seattle area trying to get naturalized citizens to cast a ballot for candidates like Democratic Sen. Patty Murray, who is in a neck-to-neck race with Republican Dino Rossi.

Pramila Jayapal, head of OneAmerica Votes, says the campaign is about empowering immigrants who may not feel like they can contribute to a campaign because they can’t vote.

          snip

About 150 volunteers rolled out in nine cities across Washington this past week, knocking on 3,000 doors.

In Bellevue, a city of nearly 123,000 east of Seattle, Gianni knocked on 25 doors and spoke to 15 people, she said.

One man, a naturalized citizen from the Philippines, said he knew what she was going through after she shared she was in the country illegally.

“There’s always a risk,” Gianni said in Spanish about her legal status. “But if there’s a change, I would feel like I contributed, even in a small part, to a change we all need.”

Gianni arrived in the United States on a visa 13 years ago looking for work and stayed. For a while her only son lived here, but has since moved back to Mexico.

“In order for there to be a change to our broken immigration system,” she said, “I believe one has to fight.”

          1. …and take a pot shot at a person who appears to truly want to be a part of this country.  I wouldn’t advise her to work on the Patty Murray campaign, or to remain in this country illegally, but JfC…

            1. Your mediamatters site don’t deny it brofus – one AmericaVotes claims 150 humans on the streets, this lady being one of them.

Nice try on the driveby Ari.

                1. I did have some give away stuff though and recently called for a pickup on craigslist … the guy was so illegal it wasn’t funny.

I really tried to get an American to pick it up, but I guess they were all busy cashing the government checks they get in the mail.

    1. They’ve tried to cast Ken as to extreme in hopes of scarring the GOP and Unaffils. What they haven’t addressed is Obamacare, taxes and spending. $13 bill in debt and nothing to show for it.

The real MFer here is that the people are so pissed and that is very hard to overcome.

        1. That’s great, Libby.  It means we’ve paid off almost all of the 13 TRILLION in debt that Bush left us!

$13 bill in debt and nothing to show for it.

  1. Bennet – credit to small business, boost alternative energy.

Buck – small business needs certainty to expand, intelligent energy policy, no hidden taxes.

You guys are both wrong. What small business needs is more demand for their products. Low taxes, more loans, 100% certainty do us no good without demand.

    1. 1.

Richard Nixon created CETA – a massive public sector jobs program to combat high unemployment.

      2.

Yale economist Robert J. Shiller wrote in a recent in the New York Times article cited on Huffington Post, the following:

“Why not use government policy to directly create jobs — labor-intensive service jobs in fields like education, public health and safety, urban infrastructure maintenance, youth programs, elder care, conservation, arts and letters, and scientific research?,” Shiller noted.

      Read more: http://www.examiner.com/job-se

      3.

Shiller also warned of an economic freefall, and certainly another great depression, unless enough stimulus is applied to create millions of jobs…(AND WE KNOW REPUBLICANS AIN’T GOING TO DO IT)

      http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/

      1. to hire back the miilions and millions of Americans that they fired, or else tax the shit out the $1 trillion surplus profits they’re sitting on.

If we Dems win, take it as a mandate to get tough with the multinational tax dodgers.

        1. And they only “dodge” taxes (100% legal, btw) here because they can pay lower taxes somewhere else.  If you owned a business, you’d want that too.

  2. Buck – eliminate the 1099 requirement, less complex tax code.

Bennet – tax code, regulatory changes that don’t move jobs overseas. Also hitting Buck on his earlier tax proposals but I don’t think most viewers will catch that.

Buck – comes back that Bennet had 20 months to simplify the tax system – and didn’t.

Everyone wants tax simplification, except the very rich – so it will never happen.

  3. Bennet – does great job listing individual people who benefited from it, and the general reasons for it. Very passionate – well done.

Buck – general complaints about it, lists the buy-offs to get it passed. But nothing specific.

Bennet is doing good on this one – he’s selling why HCR is a good thing.

  4. Buck – Wants to reduce the cost of healthcare, and does say we cover those that can’t afford it.

Bennet – Says what Buck wants to address cost is in the HCR bill, says we need to focus on cost. Then pings Buck’s comment that people can just go to the emergency room.

Buck – Brings up that the bill does not bend the cost curve (which is true).

Bennet – jumped in saying what Buck said is not true.

  5. They first show the attack ad against Buck on rape.

Buck – Comes across very serious about the focus and effort his office has placed on women’s issues. And says the ad goes over the line.

Bennet – Comes in on the “buyers remorse” comment and then brings in Buck’s abortion stance.

Buck – Comes back strong on his record, and pings Bennet for never prosecuted cases.

Bennet – jumps in saying yes he’s prosecuted cases and Buck’s lying.

Both pushed hard on this one but advantage Bennet.

  6. Bennet – I understand and agree with Bennet’s statement on this, but I think he does a horrible job of getting that message across.

Buck – Hammers Bennet for the 3 trillion increase since he got in office.

Bennet – Comes back saying he says we need to pay it back.

  7. Buck – Says that Bennet did not focus on unemployment and that led to increased joblessness. And that he did vote for tax increases.

Bennet – Says that he’s worked to lower taxes including recent tax decrease for small businesses. Bit not for the big oil companies (Didn’t Bennet vote to leave the breaks for big oil).

Advantage Buck – he focused on the Senate ignoring joblessness.

  8. Bennet – Brought up Buck’s comments that he wants the government out of the business of social security, student loans, etc. Standing up for what he said in the ad, and Buck changing comments between the primary & general.

Buck – Discussing what/why he wants student loans back in the banks and that’s what he said.

Bennet – Comes out swinging big time – talking about the savings from putting the student loans in the government and that it significantly lowers the interest rate.

Oh baby, they’re going back and forth right now over who has done better on making the government more efficient.

    1. Could have said that the Federal Government guarantees those loans while the banks make the profits.  Why not eliminate the middleman and do away with a situation like the financial crisis which led to our current mess with private reward and socialized loss.

  9. Cute & perky is great on the morning shows. Ads that hold the candidates accountable are very valuable. The soft gentle “I’m a terrific person” ones don’t teach us anything.

    Buck – cute comments.

Bennet – talked about wanting to know who’s behind the ads, For the 44th time says “always say the same thing.”

  10. Bennet – says it’s a state issue. Didn’t say how he personally stands on this.

Buck – opposed to gay marriage.

Bennet asked more and tap danced like crazy to avoid giving his personal opinion or what he thinks Colorado will do.

  11. Bennet – “I’m pro-choice.”

Buck – “I’m pro-life.” Says Bennet voted for 2 federal funding of abortion bills (huh?)

Buck asked about rape & abortion – comes back saying that economic issues are what’s important. Questioner pushes him hard to answer specifically about rape & incest (good job!). Says he sees no exceptions.

Bennet – Comes back saying that Buck’s views are way too conservative, then goes in to Buck will support large oil over the people (where did that come from?)

Interesting back and forth – both were slugging.

  12. Asks specifically about secret ballot & mandatory arbitration.

Bennet – Likes shortening up the time in the bill, wants labor & mgmt working together. Says he favors secret ballot and sceptical about binding arbitration

  13. Will Buck support the renewable industry in Colorado.

Buck – says we can’t have a green energy business because the tax and regulation policy gets in their way. And HCR also stops it.

Bennet did not push back at all – ow!

  14. Apparently Bennet has missed 92% of the committee meetings (is that true?)

Bennet – comes back that he has been there for 100% of the votes and hammers Buck for his number of missed days working as D.A.

Buck – turned back 2 months of his salary while Bennet has not.

  15. Buck – says he doesn’t think abortion will be illegal anytime soon. Says we need to take the discussion back to jobs.

Bennet – pushing Ken to answer the question.

Buck – again avoiding the question.

Advantage Bennet – he did really good on this one. Buck danced around it well, but I think this question is going to remain for the next 2 weeks.

    1. talked about a couple of abortion issues where 1 Senator can make a difference, issues that have been pointed out on this blog in recent days such as preventing the military from offering aborions and allowing foreign policy $ to be used in that way.

I agree, Bennet won that one for sure

      1.  It’s been months.

Buck lied in his response saying Bennet had voted to fund international agencies which perform abortions with US money.  He was thinking of the reversal of the “Mexico City” policy, which occurs every time the presidency changes parties.  The Hyde amendment prevents US funds from paying for abortion.  The Mexico City policy prevents US dollars from supporting groups which tell women that abortion is available to them, or lobby governments to reduce restrictions on abortion.

Buck’s answer and attitude was tremendously dismissive, as if reproductive rights lose any importance in bad economic times.

  16. Bennet – need to start coming home in the middle of next year. Mentions the worry of Pakistani nukes, but nothing about what to do about it.

Buck – says we’re doing the wrong thing there. Make sure it’s not a safe haven for Afghanistan, disrupt the drug trade, and bring stability to that area.

Bennet – hammering Buck for his numerous changes in position. Says that Buck’s criteria will keep us there forever.

    1. Bennet  is right – by Buck’s standard we would be there forever. And ever.  Which used to be Buck’s position.  Now Buck says “stability” and leave – what kind of “stability” fairy would that take?

That area has not had political stability…..ever.

Unless you can count clan balance ala the 17th century.

The people in the region don’t want western style representative government.    No “stability.”

We can eliminate any entity there – Taliban, AQ, whoever.  When we leave, they’ll be back the minute we leave.

  17. Buck – Mentions his son at West Point. Well served by the patriot act, but should review it every year and see if it is being use appropriately. Wants to keep Gitmo open.

They don’t give Bennet a turn and Buck points out they need to – class act.

Bennet – Talks well of the need to protect our civil liberties. Supports closing Gitmo, but voted against it until the administration comes up with a good closing plan.

  18. Buck – His kids are out of state so they don’t see most of the ads. But his wife has seen them but he loves campaigning with her.

Bennet – Has enjoyed travelling the state with his family. (His daughters are young enough that they hopefully have missed most of the crap.)

          1. Limbaugh (from his old TV show): “Everyone knows the Clintons have a cat. Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is a White House dog?” And he puts up a picture of Chelsea Clinton.

McCain: 1998: “Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno.”

            1. I was referring to the attacks on her. What was it, like 20 frivolous ethics complaint? She’s been called every name in the book by the Dems, and they’ve gone after here kids. They made fun of Trig for having Down’s syndrome and said he should have been aborted. Screw you, Dems. Republicans respect life.

              1. You’re such a hypocrite.  It’s really disgusting.  You’re supporting a plan that would leave any baby like Trig without basic medical care and medicine.

But Down’s syndrome kids can’t possibly need special care, so I’m sure you’re in the right.

Got anyone else to pimp for political gain?

                    1. You can’t remember who said it because it was always in your head. Palin wanted you to believe it, so you obliged.

                    2. Looks like you’re wrong, because you post links instead of actually reading what’s there. I bet you’d feel pretty stupid if you actually checked what they said!

                      From your first link:

                      http://ruleofreason.blogspot.c

At the “Center for the Advancement of Capitalism.” It’s some Ayn Rand fansite. Not a “liberal.”

I’d call you a liar, but I honestly don’t believe anymore that you’re smart enough to lie. Your lesson to the rest of us is that Objectivists are assholes, but we already knew that.

                    3. Because I don’t trust your lying source for a second. But let’s pretend.

One left winger says one distasteful remark. How, exactly, is that representative of the left as a whole?

                    4. You post a rumor and probable lie as fact, I humor you, and you can’t answer. This is why you never “best” me.

                    5. Care to blockquote where I did? You know, just to really let me have it? Failure to do so will be taken as another instance of bearing false witness.

                    6. but never can. You think “Maybe this time…” and then I ask you to prove something you said in haste and you can’t. Beej loses again.

                    7. That said, make sure you don’t keep stringing this out… I saw how you were polling on the penalty box betting pool…

                    8. You have a knack for beating yourself, beej. It’s truly… something.

As usual, you have failed to find a single NEWS source. Those are ALL opinion pieces, and none of them actually document a Dem saying what you allege.

                      Not. One.

I can always count on you to brighten my day. You’re better than a clown car for sheer amusement.

                    9. Nicholas something. Oooooo, you got me now beej!

                      I’m tearing up, I’m laughing so hard…

              2. Other than Bristol, who put HERSELF in the spotlight, link to any attack on Palin’s children.

You have nothing because you’re completely full of shit.

Palin is a piece of shit cowardly hypocrite so I’m not at all surprised you worship at her feet.

My favorite is her lightening fast reflexes when it comes to hopping on the cross and crying foul about a Dem using the word “retard” but when Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh uses it she grants them interviews. She screams and hollers about sexism and then insults the President’s manhood. She hoots and hollers about other people not living up to their responsibilities after she abandons the state of Alaska. She screeches about the 1st Amendment right to Free Speech and then her goons rip down a sign criticizing her.

But I’m sure she’s a very nice lady. Bullshit.

                  1. My comments were all about holding her to the same standard she holds others. As someone who wants to be a kingmaker, who wants to hide behind Fox and Facebook and do nothing constructive but criticize the people who are actually doing the job the people elected them to do, she sure seems awfully sensitive when someone criticizes her.

                    1. You got your facts wrong again even on Trig Palin, your candidate is dropping in the polls like a stone, you haven’t made any progress on your thesis because you spend all your time here (or apparently playing games where other kids say “PWN”), and you don’t have a girlfriend because you (like your candidate) are a sexist.

Does that about sum it up? Is that why you want me to go away? Because it’ll make you feel less bad about yourself and your situation?

Sorry, bub. I’ve got as much right to free speech as you do.

                    2. I’m making progress on my thesis just fine; thank you very much. You have a right to free speech; I have a right to call you out on your lies.

                    3. You made something up, and it was false.

If projection makes you feel better, keep doing it. But deep down I think your constant lying will start to hurt you on the inside. When it does, know that we’re here for you.

                    4. But go ahead, think that your pathetic rumor-mongering, lie-spreading blogs that even FOX won’t touch are telling the truth. Fox is part of the MSM and therefore liberally biased, right?

                    5. The fair and balanced Fox (who trashed Shirley Sherrod because they didn’t view Breitbart’s video unedited first) didn’t carry this story. Therefore even you should find reason to question it.

                    6. in crying “sexist” when someone criticizes her.

                      Let’s start simple Beej:

What about my comment was sexist towards Sarah Palin? Holding her to the same standard as a male political figure?

  19. Saying that the country has been going in the wrong direction with more regulation and increased spending. This vote is a way for the people to tell Washington “that things need to change.”

Closes asking people to go to his website to see news media evaluation of the accuracy of the ads.

    1. you’ve taken a lot of crap recently but I want to say you did a pretty good job here.

Bennet did very well, Buck less well. Bennet clearly showed, to those fair minded folks, that he is not an ideologue.

Buck, after saying he supports DOMA, then says the election shouldn’t be about social issues.

Bennet wins by a close margin. Hope and think the same is true 11/2.

  20. They shake hands, both are smiling. Both talking to the newscaster on stage with them. A wonderful thing about our country – the two of them are beating the snot out of each other, but they can remain civil afterwards. Speaks well of both of them.

  21. I think they did an excellent job running the debate. They pushed to get answers to the questions asked (mostly). They let them run a bit when an argument developed that was providing more info, but then reined it in when it got repetitive.

It gave people a good chance to see who each is.

  22. There are two groups each was trying to appeal to, their base (to make sure they vote) and the middle (to gain their vote). Both did a good job of reminding their base why there is a significant difference between the two – so both won on that.

For the middle, I don’t know.

Buck never put his foot in his mouth and did a good job tap dancing around the specifics he didn’t want to answer. On the flip side, the abortion question was brought up numerous times.

Bennet did a good job and came out swinging a couple of times. But he also had trouble getting his point across several times. He didn’t speak poorly, but he lacked clarity and so the message didn’t hit home.

Neither of them is a barn burner. But that may be what is required for a Senator here, I can’t recall any recent Senators we have who is.

For people in the middle concerned about abortion, Bennet won. For those worried about jobs or who think Washington’s dysfunction is a major issue, Buck won.

    1. For people in the middle concerned about abortion, Bennet won. For those worried about jobs or who think Washington’s dysfunction is a major issue, Buck won.

This election, based on polls, is about the economy not social issues.  Ken was wise to pivot on the social issue questions bringing the topic back to what is of interest to the electorate. By doing so he won the debate.

        1. It’s all Ken Buck ever talks about. Stop the spending, give businesses certainty to expand and create jobs. Don’t load them up with burdensome regulations that prevent them from doing business.

              1. which is more than the same old stuff they’ve been saying since before the beej came into this world.

It may not be enough, but something is always greater than nothing, don’t you think?

                  1. I’m actually unemployed at the moment, as is my wife. While you wring your hands from your CEO’s office, we’re living the nightmare at the moment. But thanks to Obama, COBRA payments are actually reasonable and unemployment benefits have been extended.

So… please stop speaking for me.

                    1. But I don’t find it acceptable that all this country is doing for you and your wife is making unemployment survivable. I want to have decent jobs available to everyone who wants to work.

                    2. If the topic is, who’s doing (or would do) better, Dems or ‘pubs, the answer is Dems. Asking if the Dems are doing enough is another topic.

I don’t know what else is possible for them to do; the GOP were the party of loyal opposition in the 30s, and are no longer that today, so that really hamstrings the Dems right there. We also don’t have the same kind of labor divisions in America that we once had, so trying to revive the New Deal probably wouldn’t work this time.

It’s important to keep in mind that it took many years to solve the Great Depression, and events outside US control played a large part in finally doing that. Maybe Obama isn’t being as brave as FDR in trying many new things to see what works. But NO ONE is really coming up with ideas. We have think tanks in Washington that are mute on this. Where are their ideas?

Right now, we’re looking at the choice between a party that’s trying to do something following tried and true methods, and a party that wants to keep trying the old methods that got us here. We kind of have to be satisfied since we have no other choice.

                  1. The GOP would have let unemployment expire and let COBRA be their usual outrageous amounts. That would be MUCH worse.

You’re a mathemetician; you know that – 5 (which the Dems have given us) is still greater than – 100 (which the GOP would have done in their place).

              1. Right. The things that got us into this mess are going to get us out of it? You must have made friends with the campus Cheech if you think that’s an obvious solution.

          1. If Buck has such a great plan,

To Washington let’s send that man.

            But wait–his website must be built by slobs;

Among “Issues” it doesn’t even list jobs.

Sorry to break it to you, his biggest fan.

      1. It’s a little bit different to say, Here’s what we have to do to create them and keep them.

Everybody’s concerned about jobs. Just saying so doesn’t provide a solution to the problem, and the Republicans are certainly not coming up with solutions, for jobs or for anything else.

Oooooo, I’m concerned. I’m a republican. Solutions? Oooooo, Obama this, Obama that.

        Knownothing hypocrites = TeaPublicans.

      2. time after time he refused to ansswer that he favors criminalizing abortion even in cases of rape and insist.  The answer is “yes” he does and everyone knows it.  By constantly trying to deflect attention he only underscored his extreme position…and continued to lose the women’s vote.,

    2. policies created the Great Recession (would be Great Depression if Republicans had remained in power). Buck is running on those same policies, which will result in fewer jobs.

  23. He said he felt the federal government shouldn’t be deciding what’s legal or illegal when it comes to marriage. Then he says he supports DOMA like a minute later!

Does he not know what DOMA actually does?

    1. Does he or doesn’t he: Want the personhood ammendment to pass? Believe all victims of rape to be guilty until proven innocent? Think he should wipe the bullshit off his boots before attending public events? Be angry along with his teabagging supporters, or compassionate toward Coloradans?

Buck, himself, is scratching his scalp. He doesn’t have a clue. Neither do his supporters. Tools of the Astroturf moneybags.

    2. And neither did Michael Bennet’s answer.

The federal government is already in the marriage business, It already decides who can and can’t get the 1,300 federal benefits of being married, like not being double taxed on our health insurance.

Reprising segregationist “state’s rights” arguments masks either deep ignorance about the current state of the law, or deep animus toward gay people. I believe it’s the former. I don’t believe he’s a bigot, but I do believe he is poorly informed.

      1. First, say it’s a state issue so that his vote as a federal representative won’t matter.

Second, decline to say if he personally supports gay marriage.

With “friends” like these, can you blame Arvadonian for not voting?

  24. I’d feel pained too if I knew better than to answer the rape and incest question but couldn’t find a way not to.

Otherwise, Buck was an excellent mouthpiece for the Republican theme of protecting corporate priviledge and giving only lip service to jobs and the economy.

  25. Why only the single-day posting of election returns on ColoradoPols ????

I spoke to some campaign girls who said they’ve got numbers through Thurs.  I talked to them this morning.

Is there a web site we can go to?

    1. So I don’t expect to be seeing very much of it on ColoradoPols.  If they keep posting them more people will figure it out.

      2008 Dem % early vote-37.7%, Republican – 35.9, Dems by 1.8%

      2010 Dems-36.5, Republicans 41.2, Republicans by 4.7%.

      1. You’re comparing the total 2008 early-vote turnout with the reported turnout for the first week of voting this year. Republicans consistently turn ballots in at the start of early voting at a higher rate than the total early vote.

  26. A Facebook status this evening from the Denver newspaper that rhymes with Toast (I don’t think their lawyers ever told Pols we can’t quote their Facebook, right?)

“The U.S. Senate race between Bennet and Buck is tight. Read about the candidates final debate, which took place tonight.”

It rhymes…. that’s PROBABLY not a subtle reference to my recent limericks, but I’d really get a kick out of it if it was. In any case, the more silly rhyming we get in this Senate race, the better, since the actual contest is pretty ludicrous.

    1. They had argued over some point of law for decades.  Finally, Rabbi Moshe suggests that they ask G-d to settle the matter. So, he and Rabbi Yeshua pray and pray for hours. Suddenly, there is a clap of thunder and a voice booms, “Rabbi Yeshua is correct!”

Rabbi Moshe shrugs and says, “Well, it’s only two out of three.”

The joke is actually an insight to Jewish theology: The quest for knowledge is more significant than getting the answers, if possible.  It seems counter to so many Christians that take an “I’m right, you’re wrong,” posture.

      BTW, love those limericks!

      1. My signature line is my revision of a joke horse people tell–“Two horse trainers can talk for hours and all they’ll agree on is that the third trainer is doing it all wrong.”

Figured I’d just set it here until I found a quote I liked better from the board, but then I got to like it, so I have no real plans to change it yet.

And thanks for the compliment on my limericks!

  27. SO far I am close on the numbers, just wrong on the results. Like I have always said, you will be waking up Nov 3rd saying, “What the $^#% Just happened.”

Like the thousands of “Walking Dead” who crawled down the 16th Mall (knowing Buck n’ Bennet were DOA) a few days ago, we will again meet there Weds Morn, I will carrying a cardboard box for a “lame-duck” Senator to put his crap in and get the hell out of the office the People of Colorado are it taking back. You can’t buy it. We are taking a STAND and sending the message to Wa DC that the INSANITY will STOP!

Oh… I don’t need to trash the Buck n’ Bennet show, they are spending millions doing that on TV, and they are doing a great job at it. Doing the same thing over and over again.
