Okay You Freaks. TIme For a Drink.

(If there’s beer, I’m in – promoted by DavidThi808)

I hope Laughing Boy doesn’t mind that I swiped his diary title from two years ago….

Anyway, the election is over, the dust is still in the air but is beginning to settle, and it’s been a long, long time since we last had some kind of get together. I’ll take point on getting this one organized, but as always you need to help decide when and where it happens.

So, do we want to drink in Denver (as usually happens) or would we like to see the other parts of the state? What day of the week works best? Any favorite watering holes to recommend? Let’s hear it!

UPDATE 1: So far people are saying let’s do it in Denver, with one vote for a Saturday. I will tentatively propose Saturday, November 20th.

I want to hear from people outside of Denver (other than those who expressed willingness to come here already) before deciding to do it here. What say you, non-Denverites?

UPDATE 2: Denver it is, downtown location preferred. We have nominations for the Wynkoop and the Cheeky Monk. I’m leaning Wynkoop per RSB’s satisfactory review. If you have strong feelings about another locale, now’s the time to bring it up.

UPDATE 3: I’ve put up a new diary with a poll for deciding where to meet. Check it out…

  1. Denver works best for me, especially on a weekend. Saturday’s best.

I’ll definitely make it if you have one. Wynkoop, maybe, or is that overplayed? I just like a good beer.

    1. for my 72 F250.  I could pull them off at the junkyard then come for the meet and greet.

If you don’t like grease and bloody knuckles, don’t shake my hand.

        1. Owned this when doing landscaping in Longmont mid-1970’s.  Pulled the original 331 engine and put in a Chrysler 354 Hemi.  With an overhead pickup camper and a load of family and gear, it could climb the 7% grade to the tunnels in high gear!

I also designed and installed a hydraulic dump for the bed for landscaping materials.

          Wish I still had it…….

  2. Depending on where the place ends up being, I might be able to do it. I will keep an eye on the thread and play it by ear.

I can only do Denver though. If I make it, I will be the really nervous guy constantly looking for exits and making sure I have a clear path to one. 😉

  3. It’s been wayyyy too long since we did the last one. I assume this means Ari will be doing the work, and will get to put up with everyone freaking out over where and when it is. Good luck, it’s not easy to please the polsters.

  4. The fairest thing will be to have it at the Geographic center of Colorado. Here are the coordinates:

    Longitude: 105В° 38.5’W

    Latitude: 38В° 59.9’N

I’ll meet you all there in two and a half weeks.

      1. I guess it would depend on water levels, or if the reservoir (Lake George?) in Spinney Mountain State Park is frozen.

But I notice on Google Earth that there are a couple of old cabins along the South Platte that might be big enough to hold a gathering…

  5. But any downtown establishment will do.

And I’ll drive to the West side of Town, maybe even Golden.

And now that I think about it, I can go to Southwest Denver. And Stapleton. And Lowry.

Ah, crap, just tell me where. Only restriction is no mainstream beer. Fat Tire or Better.

    1. I sent a buddy with some things.  Largely of the feminine hygiene variety.  He said it looked “OK.”  He’s not much for details or storytelling.

      1. 9News had only done one day’s worth of promo, and that was only the talent doing a reader with a still graphic.

Even so, people started donating at 0730 and did not stop until we closed down the donation point.

55 boxes of new gloves, socks, hats, thermal underwear and other cold weather gear will be distributed at the Homeless Vets Stand Down today. Considering that last year we could barely give out one pair of socks, one tshirt and one pair of drawers. this is going to be a huge help.

We also collected A LOT of cash. I don’t know what the final total is, but I think it’ll be on 9News.com later today.

We also ended up with 60 boxes of good used stuff that ended up going to the DAV Store. That’s going to be huge for us financially, since the State organization is going broke fast. Between the recession killing donations and the cost of running our Service Office at Fort Carson, we’re bleeding money.

I’m going to miss my first Stand Down for the first time in 6 years, since I have to do some business stuff at the Video Expo today. I’ll get some numbers from the committee tomorrow, but it looks like we’ll break 600 vets.

        Sad.

    2. I was considering the Cheeky Monk at Colfax and Pearl, just a couple of blocks east of the capitol. We had a meetup there a couple of years ago (sparsely attended due to cold snap) and if you want to get away from mainstream beer, that’s the place. But the Wynkoop is always a good option, too.

      1. And it worked out pretty well. Close to Union Station for those of us taking public transit, good beer, and they were very accommodating–set up a room for us and everything.

      2. I wouldn’t mind doing something different from Wynkoop though. Falling Rock is nice, though there’s not much room for a big group.

We’ve had anywhere from 4 to 20 people show up, so you never really know.

          1. In fact I think it was the one LB proposed after the last election. But there was a cold snap. IIRC, the final turnout was Phoenix Rising, Mrs. Phoenix Rising, Pam Bennett, Droll, and Precinct 854. There might have been one other person? LB himself was a no show, but the weather was pretty rotten that day. I was suprised PR and his wife made the trip from Gilpin County.

  6. Suggestion to Voyageur:

How about if you let the Beej out of his bet if he agrees to dance in a giant bird cage suspended from the ceiling while wearing nothing but a leopard print thong and white vinyl go-go boots?

      1. It eases the suffering.

I’ve never been to a meet-up before but might try to catch this one.  What’s the protocol?  Do we dress like our nom-de-blog and try to guess who everybody is?  Are there nametags?

        1. At least we didn’t last time. Just went around in a circle and said our name and blog name. Though that might be more fun for the new people.

In case you’re wondering, I look like Walter Matthau in a bad mood.

          1. would be a good idea, I think! I’m terrible with remembering names from just hearing them, and keeping track of both ‘real’ names and ‘blog’ names is just too much 🙂

            1. we didn’t ask for real names. But we also had a small group. But I’ll try to remember to bring those “Hi! I’m __ ” stickers. (There used to be a lurker and sometime polster named “thesupercock.” It would be hilarious to see that on a nametag.)

                  1. David hasn’t checked in.  I hope Gertie can make it.  Robin, you go to the Mesa County Socialist meetings on Friday mornings, right?  Ask around the room for Polsters and you’ll at least get Duke and Ardy.  Let them know.

                    1. ardy doesn’t frequent the backroom of MSB. I think it’s primarily a vanity thing – an insistence that his quantity of gray hairs is insufficient to confer full membership status among the Irregulars.

                    2. I’ll know more definitively in a week or two.

It would be pretty cool to meet some other Pols folk.

  7. but not sure right now I’ll be in town that weekend. My 10th anniversary is the day before and we were thinking of trying to escape for the weekend.

If not or if you decide a different weekend, I’m definitely in.

      1. To be fair, the 10th is a bit of a milestone. (I have 12 years in myself.) But I think scheduling it for the afternoon is the way to go, so you can still have a nice dinner later.

    1. Just not in the late fall/wintertime. 🙂

David’s suggesting a Grand Junction gathering for December 4 since he’s going to be in town. I think it would be great if you guys could host a gathering there.

  8. and it was already kind of crowded at the Wynkoop. Early Saturday afternoon would be OK (like 3 pm or so), but trying to do something like this on a Saturday evening is a bad idea, I think, especially since this crowd isn’t going to be spending that much money. (Buncha damn dirty Democrats.)

        1. I just assumed it was Michigan/OSU that weekend.  I can’t remember that game EVER being played after Thanksgiving.  It looks like that’s the new normal (plus Nebraska/Iowa/MSU/OSU EVERY year!)  I think that sucks for the students; go home or go to the game?

Anyway, it wouldn’t have stopped me from coming, so count me in!

          1. All played the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Eat your turkey, sleep, and leave for State College midday Friday.

Smuggle in a bottle of Bacardi in your sock and buy mixers from the Coke guy.

  9. Could we try to set up so kind of link (online blog would be great, but I was thinking more along the lines of a skype or video webcast) in the event that out-of-towners who can’t make it, and others (thinking about EK76), could join in via the web if they want?

I guess what I’m asking is if anyone with the technical skill necessary (and that ain’t me) would be willing to do this?

    1. … I post anonymously for a reason, and personally I’d rather not have my likeness go out for the whole world to see. It’s one thing for people to trek down and meet me in person, but going out on skype is another matter.

I know not everyone can make it, and I’m sorry for that, but there will be other opportunities to meet up. I’ve only been to one of these myself.

        1. Meeting everyone and not leaving the house! Best of both worlds!! I am going to attempt to do this though. That’s what they make anti-anxiety meds for. lol I’ll dope myself up and head out to meet you guys!

  10. Has anyone heard of life settlement investments. We are thinking of doing a feature on them and want some experiences. They look good on the face of them. As I understand it theycan generate 10% a year as a matter of course, and can be significantly better. Probably best as part of a portfolio I guess. Thoughts anyone.

  11. With retirement ages being increased, and pensions not meeting the needs of pensioners, where will it all stop. Are Uk citizens going to be working until 80 as a matter of course in the future. Sure we are living longer, but surely things need to be put in place to ensure that our elderly are catered for. Auto enrolment is putting the burden of responsibility on to the employer, but what about all those small companies where 10% of their employees will remain opted in. We have to ensure that companies don’t encourage opt outs of things are not going to be better for the current working generation.
