No, this isn’t a story from The Onion. According to The Toronto Star, Illinois Rep. John Shimkus believes himself “uniquely qualified” to Chair the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, because he already has this whole climate change thing figured out:
U.S. Representative John Shimkus, possible future chairman of the Congressional committee that deals with energy and its attendant environmental concerns, believes that climate change should not concern us since God has already promised not to destroy the Earth. [Pols emphasis]
Shimkus, an evangelical Christian and a Republican member of the House from Illinois, on Tuesday signalled his desire to become chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce…
…Shimkus already serves on the committee. During a hearing in 2009, he dismissed the dangers of climate change and the warnings of the scientific community by quoting the Bible…
…“The Earth will end only when God declares it’s time to be over. Man will not destroy this Earth. [Pols emphasis] This Earth will not be destroyed by a Flood,” Shimkus asserted. “I do believe that God’s word is infallible, unchanging, perfect.”
Maybe the earth won’t be habitable, but at least it won’t be destroyed.
Well, that’s reassuring. Or something.

that the Republicans plan to rename the committee the “House Committee on Apocalypse and Commerce.”
an imaginary invisible being commit mass suicide and call it rapture, can we made the earth functional and habitable for the rest of us??
I’d do most anything to hasten their departure, heck I’d be happy to stir the Kool-aid and buy them all shiny new Nikes for their trip.
But I don’t wanna go on any ride with the Wasilla Hillbilly and her born again end-times church.
Obama might be the anitchrist but he’s me antichrist and he’s a hell of a lot better than some bitter old Arizona millionaire or some AK faux-moose hunting ex-gov.
God helps those who help themselves. Sitting on your ass and expecting God to make everything ok is not what I think he had in mind…
Benjamin Franklin, not that I care. One bible is as good as the next as far as I’m concerned.
Dave’s version is definitely more entertaining though. 🙂
Gee, Representative Shimkus,
We’re down on our knees,
‘Cause no one wants a planet with a warming disease.
Gee, Representative Shimkus,
What are we to do?
Gee, Representative Shimkus,
Shimk you!
With eternal apologies to Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.

= elephant in the room of American politics. It’s impossible to persuade those who believe that we are in the ‘end times’ that we should take seriously long-term issues like climate change. Perhaps someone in the ColoradoPols community could draft an update to Spinoza’s Theological-Political Treatise.
This kinda reminds me of the old joke of the man who received the warning from God of the impending flood, who then decides not to take any of the three different avenues of escape to higher ground that come his way, in the form of a raft, a canoe, and a ship, saying that “God will provide.” The man then dies in the flood, and goes to the Afterlife, where he asks God why He did not send help for his predicament. And God says to the man, I sent you three boats, what more did you want?
Namely, why are human beings so dumb? This stupidity will have increasingly dire consequences.
had some thoughts on the matter. He said something like “the difference between genius and stupidity, is that genius has its’ limits”.
Perceptive fellow, he was.
..never watched Battlestar Galactica. It is all part of GOD’S PLAN.
and it will happen again.
He had a chance to work on climate change legislation and institute cap and trade policies but he spent so much time trying to placate Republicans over health care that he lost his filibuster proof majority in the Senate and as they say the rest is history. What a wasted opportunity to protect the planet from a nasty future. We thought we had a champion and now it turns out we have a cowardly mouse.
I’m having trouble remembering the last time the guy showed any political courage to do anything. Immigration reform? Nope. Renewable energy policy? Nope. Repealing DADT? Nope! Letting the Bush tax cuts expire for the top 2%. Probably not. It looks like he learned his politics from Neville Chamberlain.
What’s depressing is that the next time Republicans screw up (and they will) it might not be able to be fixed. What a bummer.
It makes me want to laugh, but it also disgusts me that someone in that situation would say something like that.
Maybe Shimkus will also get indicted on 24 felony counts……
Really? I hate when goobers like this hurt our cause!
However, now that I think about it he has just as much basis for his crazy belief as the global warming freaks do!
Remember folks the new green, is the old red.
Seriously. I’m all in favor of religious tolerance and not letting a person’s faith in any way determine their fitness for public office.. But if you believe the end of time is imminent you are by your own belief system unfit to manage resources for those of us left behind.
They elected him.
Ironically, his most famous speech is the one he made to House pages after Congressman Mark Foley tried to have an affair with one of them, explaining that “adults make bad choices.”
John Shimkus, alas, is a living testament to that fact.
