Does Character Matter? Boebert Hopes It Doesn't

Lauren Boebert’s mug shot taken upon her arrest in February, 2017

Justin Wingerter of The Denver Post has more on a long list of criminal offenses and general disregard for law enforcement associated with CO-3 Republican candidate Lauren “Q*Bert” Boebert:

Congressional candidate Lauren Boebert — who often espouses a pro-police, law-and-order message on the campaign trail — has been arrested and summonsed at least four times over the past decade, records show.

While the three arrests and one court-ordered summons were for petty crimes — and in one case all charges were dropped — Boebert’s record is unusually long for a congressional candidate. [Pols emphasis]

You could perhaps argue about the relative level of severity related to Boebert’s various troubles with the law, but there is one constant in all of these cases: Boebert doesn’t think she has any responsibility to follow the same laws as everyone else.

While she was being handcuffed for disorderly conduct, Boebert tried to twist away from police, according to deputies’ reports. She allegedly shouted that her arrest was unconstitutional, that “she had friends at Fox News and that the arrest would be national news.” It did not become national news.

Boebert was released from custody and told to appear in court that August but missed her court date because, as she told a judge, she forgot what day of the week it was. “I am now aware today is Friday,” she wrote on Aug. 28, 2015, hours after she was supposed to be in court.

The judge, Craig Henderson, rescheduled for later that year. But Boebert again was a no-show at a Nov. 20 hearing. In a handwritten note to the judge, she did not include a reason for her absence…

…Failing to appear for court also landed Boebert in jail a year later. As first reported by the Colorado Times Recorder, Boebert was charged with careless driving and operating an unsafe vehicle after rolling her truck into a Garfield County ditch in the summer of 2016. They were minor traffic charges, but Boebert skipped an October court date.

Voters in Colorado’s third congressional district — Republican or otherwise — have a similar moral quandary about Boebert as they have with President Trump. Either character matters…or it doesn’t. You can scrub away with “Supreme Court justices” and “abortion” until your skin bleeds, but it doesn’t change the truth about Trump’s various affairs and questionable humanity in general.

If character is important, then you aren’t voting for Trump in November, and you definitely aren’t voting for Boebert. If you can convince yourself that character doesn’t matter, well…we’re just glad we don’t have to look in your mirror every morning.

  1. Well, she may come by her wackiness, so to speak, honestly, or at least genetically. Check out this "people-finder" information (and yeah, I recognize its limitations and always regard it with caution) about her mother, Shawn Elaine Roberts: https://www.mylife.com/shawn-roberts/e48163846530.

    "Religion: Scientologist."

"Work: HBIC [look it up] at Raising Crazy People."

    kwtree: take it from here.

  2. This race makes me crazy!  You have a candidate running for U.S. Congress that dropped out of high school at 17 because she got pregnant, started a theme restaurant, has unpaid back taxes on restaurant, proceeded to give 80 people food poisoning at an event she catered, allows underage workers to carry handguns at her restaurant, arrested multiple times, ticketed for rolling her truck and not showing up for her court date, supports QAnon conspiracy theories, supports right wing militant groups, supports abolished the EPA and Dept of Education, and is now TIED in the polls.  Not to be overly dramatic – but, how can this be?

    1. Rifle High School says she graduated in 04. She was 17 at that time. We don’t know if she was pregnant then, but certainly had a baby on the way at her marriage to Jayson Boebert in June 2005. ( If oldest son Tyler was 4 in 2009 per this article.)

But to me, and probably to many women, those are the most sympathetic parts of Boebert’s biography. We can relate to early and inconvenient pregnancies, shotgun weddings, not going to college because of lack of childcare, doing the double shift at home and at the business. Even the wacky mother- my own adult children probably have a few stories to share.

No, it’s the utter hypocrisy of Boebert, the lying and selective memory, her endangering of the public’s health,  evading legal consequences, moralizing about how Democrats are immoral- those are the things that make me crazy.

I just got a fundraising email from Diane Mitsch Bush, printed in-house without photos or graphics. I’ll contribute to her and hope for the best.

      1. I appreciate KW's reply. This is exactly why Lauren is winning. Getting married, having your children, and raising them in one family – this is actually a good thing. Starting a business because you want to support your family (and end up creating jobs) – wow – that's a damn good thing.

If you want to criticize Boebert, I get it. But the mistake the left is making is attempting to portray her most virtuous decisions as, somehow, failures in life.

        1. “the mistake the left is making…..”

Why do you assume that every person who opposes Boebert is “left?” Not everyone posting on this web site is “left.” Myself, I’m a Never-Trump Republican.

        2. She is applying for a job to participate in the process of crafting legislation for the entire country.  This is an intellectually challenging job.  Challenging her past experiences should not be labelled as a liberal elite exercise.  Everyone seems to view elections as a beauty or twitter retort or best drinking buddy contest.  This is why this race drives me.  If elected, wouldn’t Boebert be the most unqualified member of Congress?

          1. Boebert is unqualified, period. Bush is extremely qualified.

Those of you who follow water issues- is DMB’s expertise and advocacy on water  going to be enough to carry rural voters? I think it kept Scotty Tipton in office for way longer than his expiration date.

DMB is probably correct to only attack Boebert on the “kitchen table” issues, though- Boebert’s opposition to the Affordable Act, and general lack of a plan for anything other than carrying guns everywhere.

            1. If qualifications could win this seat, history would read quite differently in CD3.

Sadly, the most qualified person has almost never held the seat…

              1. Let DMB talk about health care, water, Boebert being “too extreme” to get stuff done.

Boebert’s criminal record is also fair game. Most people, let alone Congressional candidates,  don’t have a rap sheet like hers. I’d expect Bush to take it up.

But as I wrote before, Boebert’s failings as a proper Christian woman – her out of wedlock pregnancy and dating an older man as a juvenile,  will make her more relatable to women, not less. Unlike Miguel Ali, I don’t consider these “virtues”, but rather manifestations of common sexism. Guys don’t like to wear condoms for birth control, and do like to play a powerful Prince Charming to rescue a troubled teen from a sad life. And Lauren is responsible for her choices, as well.

I wish there was a PAC or issue committee that would attack Boebert on all of it- the character flaws, the ignorance and lack of qualifications, the dishonesty, lack of care for public health, her ignorance and conspiracy-mongering, and the greater competence of Diane Mitsch Busch.

But Bush will have to be selective about venues of attack on Boebert.

          2. If elected, wouldn’t Boebert be the most unqualified member of Congress?

I don't know if I would call her the most unqualified although she may have the least amount of formal education.

If you look at overall intelligence, she's in the mix with the likes of Louie Goemert, Matt Gaetz and Ted Yoho.

            1. Matt Gaetz, from what I've seen, actually gets it on climate issues. As he should, considering that he represents a very low-in- elevation congressional district.

The rest of Matt…….well, us common sense conservatives take our victories where we can get them.

    1. Yep. And the talking points re: lack of formal education have been around forever: "This is just more liberal elitism, a bunch of effete city dwellers who think they're better than you, educated far beyond their own intelligence, looking down on someone who overcame long odds and became a success through determination and hard work. If you think Lauren isn't smart enough for Congress or doesn't care about issues that affect our district, then listen to her speak. Make up your own mind. But don't pay attention to liberal ad homs about high school diplomas."

The qualifications thing is easy enough to counter as well: "If the effete, overeducated liberal elitists would bother to read Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution, they'd see that the qualifications for the U.S. House of Representatives are being at least 25 years old, a U.S. citizen for at least 7 years, and a resident of the state from which you're elected. Lauren qualifies. Period. End of discussion."

      1. Certainly, she is qualified to run…and to serve, if she wins. The issue is her ability to understand and process often nuanced information. So too, her willingness to listen interminably to opinions she doesn’t like. What is of importance is her ability and willingness to DO the actual job she is campaigning for. Her ability to focus.

Time will tell if she wants to actually perform the duties of a real legislator, or she just wants the fame and fortune. I suspect she is pretty well consumed by the “Grizzly Mama” / Yosemite Samantha connection.

        1. If she wins, the best case scenario for people living in that district is that she pulls a Palin and quits halfway through her term to seek fame and fortune in the wingnut grifting biz. That's not likely, as the $174K taxpayer-funded salary will likely keep her dazzled for some time.

    1. Good resource. Nice to see all her wacky ideas in one place, with citations. I hadn’t seen one of these oppo compilations since Gardner 2014 or so.

As far as her arrest report, they  might not have been able to get her CBI report without her real birth date and maiden name (12/19/86 Lauren Opal Roberts) , which might explain why she has been giving out so many different birth years and dates. You’re welcome.

        1. (Edited to take out my uncharitable “guesses”) . It looks as though Boebert’s “crimes” are financial – a civil judgement on a small bill, a “forcible entry and detainer” which is a charge a property owner can pursue when a tenant refuses to leave a property. For sure, Jayson Boebert had the major part in the food poisoning at the rodeo incident, since it was his pork they were using. ( from his other business, Smokehouse 1776)

This gossipy stuff is fun schadenfreude for us, (me, anyway)  but it doesn’t help Diane M Bush- because she won’t use it. Even a PAC or issue committee wouldn’t touch the hubs’ shortcomings- unless there were ethical problems or conflicts of interest.

Because Republicans are so very concerned about ethics and conflicts of interests with their own candidates.

  3. Today, Boebert, Gardner, and Ken Buck were notables at a GOP get together at the public shoot 'em up facility near Cameo.

I wonder how much they paid the state to use the facilities for a political rally.

      1. That could be, but it also has BLM and DNR connections. It was built by the Feds as I understand it, so the Cameo Shooters Group, or whatever they may call themselves, would have a nice place where they could get out of the rain.

Somebody should be paying somebody for its political use. Or has corruption and cronyism completely permeated the GOP…from top to bottom?

  4. I’ve known several “only” high school grads who are bright, avid readers, and able to carry on discussions on a variety of topics…. plus do a trade and run a business.

One woman I knew rose to be senior secretary in a state agency, managing about 200 assistants, interacting with very bright technical staff, getting along with a series of political appointees who officially led the agency.  Plus raising a family mostly on her own, as hubby was on the road. And became the leader of a church [which is how I met her].   Impressive in so, so many ways.  And unwilling to compromise, a believer in unusual theological implications, and one of the truly amoral [in some dimensions] people I have met.

Choosing how to challenge Boebert in the campaign is both a strategic and tactical issue — but it will define DMB every bit as much as it does Boebert.
