BCDP Resolution Passed Last Night - We Oppose the Compromise

  • by: wbhyde

Last night at the Boulder County Democratic Party Executive Committee, I proposed that we suspend the rules and consider a resolution.  After some changes, here is what passed:

“Whereas the Boulder County Democratic Party stands in support of the middle class and the unemployed,

Whereas the current compromise proposal as set forth by President Obama extends the Bush tax cuts for those in the upper two percent of taxable income,

Whereas the compromise proposal contains items which are potentially harmful to the Social Security System,

Therefore be it resolved that the Boulder County Democratic Party stands in opposition to this compromise proposal.”

  1. How, please, does the second whereas,

Whereas the current compromise proposal as set forth by President Obama extends the Bush tax cuts for those in the upper two percent of taxable income,

relate to the first or third? Where indeed.

I see no reference, for example, to enlarging the deficit, or not.

What about features of the “compromise” that preserve various tax breaks for the middle class? Indeed, what about avoiding a de facto tax increase for the middle class at this stage in the economic recovery?

    What about extending unemployment benefits?

Is the BCDP executive committee privy to some data that says the Republicans would have given way? If so, when? Before the new Congress takes over? Let us in on the secret, or do we have to wait for WikiLeaks, Boulder County Democratic Party edition?

Should we take it for granted, then, that the Boulder County Democratic Party executive committee has washed its hands of President Obama? That the BCDPEC has decided to sit on the sidelines while this debate goes forth (I ask since I see nothing in your resolution demanding some other course of action)?

What should we do? Say no to Obama and then … and then tell Jared we don’t like his position on this issue either?

For whom do you believe the Boulder County Democratic Party Executive Committee speaks?

[I yield the floor to the Applausemeister … can you already hear the waves of huzzas echoing off the Flatirons? Or do you hear what I hear–a great silence? Maybe Santa will give me a MiracleEar for the holiday.]
