Wanted to share this letter James Mejia just sent out with the Pols community and invite everybody to stop by the kick-off reception next Tuesday. Whether you are supporting James or have yet to decide on a candidate, we hope you’ll come by to meet James as he shares his vision for moving Denver forward
On December 14th I will formally announce my candidacy for Mayor and share my vision for Denver’s future. I ask you to join me as we celebrate the privilege of living in Denver, the regional capital of the New West.
In 1934, my mother Ophelia was born one of fifteen children who picked beets in the fields of Northern Colorado to help support the family. The first in her family to go to college, just one generation later she ensured that all thirteen of her children would attend college.
Remembering the sacrifices my mother made raising her family, I am reminded of the daily struggle so many Denver families now face, just to make ends meet.
Denver’s history is one of boom and bust cycles in mining, oil and gas, and technology. Today’s financial crisis impacts nearly all industries as well as housing throughout the city. But I know that with sound vision and steady, experienced and proven leadership, Denver’s best days can be ahead.
I am fortunate to be a native of Denver, the son of educators. My father, a Korean War veteran and public school teacher, taught us the importance of a strong work ethic and heartfelt public service. As an early childhood educator, my mother showed us how to stretch every dollar and invest early in Denver’s youth.
Denver faces a $100 million budget deficit. I bring the experience of balancing the City budget on day one to the Mayor’s Office. I am the only candidate with:
City Cabinet Level Experience – as Manager of Parks and Recreation I reduced the budget by 10% for two successive years, used 30% less water and managed to expand the park system by 25%.
Capital Construction Experience – as Project Manager of the $400 million Denver Justice Center I partnered with the private sector to construct 1 million square feet on-budget and on-time.
Job Creation Experience – As Manager of the Small Business Revolving Loan Fund, I led Colorado delegations abroad to create global distribution networks while in the Mayor’s and Governor’s Offices of Economic Development
We face challenging economic times. Yet I believe our best days are ahead. We have the opportunity to prepare our workforce for the new energy economy, recruit large and small firms, diversify our industry mix, provide low interest loans to small businesses and emerge stronger as a City.
As Mayor of Denver I will engage Denverites from all communities with diverse perspectives to work with me as we move Denver forward.
It was my parents’ hard work and vision that ensured my future. Join me December 14th to launch our campaign and ensure the future of the next generation of Denver citizens.
Sincerely,
James Mejia
