Happy Birthday to Us: Colorado Pols Turns 6

  • by: Colorado Pols

Six years ago today, we started Colorado Pols with little more than a dream, some hope, free blog software, Internet tubes, three marbles and 14 jellybeans.

Today, we’re the most popular and influential political website in Colorado, with 1 million monthly page views and our very own legal threats to prove it.

Thank you — all of you (well, not YOU, spammers) — for helping us to become more than just a website. Thanks to your contributions, Colorado Pols has become a true community (witness the regular “Pols meet-ups” that readers organize on their own). Thank you to all of the commenters, diarists and Front Page Editors, and to all of your sock puppets, too. And thank you to those who prefer just to read and watch from the sidelines — you’re an important part of this community in your own right (even those of you who say that you don’t read Colorado Pols).

So Happy Birthday to us! And Happy Birthday to you, too, because Colorado Pols is as much yours as it is ours.

Is Colorado Pols the Most Important Website on Earth?

  1. Six years ago I was completely in the throes of new parenthood and not spending much time on the internet. I wouldn’t discover this site until the spring of 2006 but I’ve been here ever since. Thanks for giving us such a great forum! And thanks to the hard right dummies whose foolish and emotional arguments provide me with continuing proof that I’m on the right side of the issues. 🙂

  2. Does this mean you’re goign to share the extraordinary riches generated by the high traffic we drive to this site with the rest of us???

    🙂

    Happy Birthday CP.

    1. You will all be receiving a check in the mail in equal proportions from the yearly money we get from George Soros and Ross Perot.

There will be zeros on the check. Not a lot of them — but there will be zeros.

  3. Anybody making ad revenue off this site is in a different category as far as ownership, right?

But I’m not bitter. I only popped by because I’m trying to make some embedded code work and it only seems to work on half the pages I’ve tried it on, and I don’t know why. So that makes this site a service which I’m utilizing for free… hard to complain about that, right?

Preview looks like it works though… fyi it doesn’t actually call John McCain (at the moment… still working on that part.)

      1. … but I believe different pages set which versions of HTML or XML are compatible with their design. Also, some sites disable embedding (Pols obviously is not one of them, but other blogs I follow won’t let you post an actual youtube video, for example.)

        Hope these clues help…

        1. We can only offer the services available through the Soapblox software that Colorado Pols utilizes. We don’t control the functionality — only the content.

  4. Happy Bday – and hat tip to all the heart burn you have caused to numerous staffers over the years who get into battles with other polsters. 🙂

  5. If You Were Born Today, December 23

This is one of the more charming birthdays of the year, although it can also be one that uses that charm for personal gain! This is natural to a degree, but some of you will take this too far, while others will keep it in check. Some of you will find ways to market your ability to gain others’ confidence. You are a determined person with strong personal presence and magnetism. Your relationships and friendships tend to be unusual, or the people you attract into your life are an eclectic bunch. You are truly talented, creative, and mostly very considerate of others. Famous people born today: Harry Shearer, Corey Haim, Susan Lucci, Chet Baker, Eddie Vedder.

  6. I stalked the first few years, completely intimidated by the “scientific” odds to the left. Glad I jumped in and made lots of friends (and a few enemies here). Thanks for the memories.

    1. you’re taking it too seriously.  There are only two modes here; reasoned debate and hilarity.  Which is which?  The answer may surprise you.  Or me.  And/or other people.
