getting my name back on the list so early in the new year:
I have to disagree with #4 — I don’t think RSB is a Republican just so that he has more in common with you David. (Sheesh!)
But, I do agree with #6 — being a Republican does appear to be much less work than thinking.
…I wanna hear the brief on your ‘switch’…
I aligned myself more with the Libertarian Party, even going so far as to volunteer for them, but I supported Bush-Cheney and I would have voted for Bush over Gore in 2000 if I was old enough to vote.
I voted for Owens in 2002, and I was pretty conservative on fiscal policy. It was the Iraq War (of which I was a supporter when I thought they posed a real threat and had WMD) that made me change my mind on the Republicans. That, combined with the ludicrous spending and debt of the Bush years, made me vote for Kerry and every other Dem on the ballot in 2004 as a protest. Still angry about the Iraq War, I supported them again in 2006. I finally registered Dem in 2007, but it was only so I could vote for Obama in the caucus here. By the time I finally voted in my first partisan precinct caucus, I realized I quite liked the Dems, and I decided to do as much as I could to elect Obama and support Democratic candidates.
I’ve gotten more liberal on fiscal policy (although I was never even close to being as conservative as you are) but I find my stances to be in the center, or in some cases slightly to the right, of the majority of Democrats. I’m more about finding common sense solutions, rather than trying to define a policy by traditional partisan boundaries.
Ultimately I think I will always be a Democrat, but I think my upbringing and the evolution of my political beliefs helps me put it all in perspective.
I agree about “liking” the Party – I love the activists of our Party
I’m with you there, rsb. All we have to do is overcome resentment, greed, ego, vengance, ambition, and a couple other human foibles and…mission accomplished.
🙂
had a significantly different view on national security than I.
Political favors granted to cronies.
Keep it up then.
(The inside jokes are beginning to outnumber the actual diaries.) Nonetheless, I am enjoying them.
Carry on.
