Democrats Choose Charlotte for 2012 DNC

  • by: Colorado Pols

From MSNBC First Read:

The Democratic National Committee today announced the selection of Charlotte, NC, as the site of the party’s 2012 convention, a clear sign that Democrats will once again target the Tar Heel State in the upcoming presidential contest.

It will be the first presidential-nominating convention to ever take place in North Carolina.

Barack Obama narrowly won the state in 2008, 50%-49% (or 2,142,651 votes to John McCain’s 2,128,474) — the first time a Democrat carried the state in a presidential contest since 1976.

By selecting Charlotte — which beat out St. Louis, MO; Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN; and Cleveland, OH — Obama and his political advisers will try to repeat their success in 2008, when they used the convention as an organizing tool to win the state in the general election. (In 2008, Denver hosted the Democratic convention, and Obama went on win Colorado, 54%-45%, the first time a Dem presidential nominee had carried it since 1992.)

    1. It’s bold. It’s sends the message that the Dems aren’t going to settle for just the traditional mid-west battlegrounds, they plan on fighting it out in traditionally red 2004 Obama states like North Carolina, Indiana, etc.

If they had picked Minn or Ohio, the media narritive would be that they were already losing. You don’t score any goals playing only defense.

      1. First King James, next 21 straight losses and still going, now the Dems?

That’s pouring salt into an open wound.

Next they’ll move the rock ‘n roll hall of fame museum to LA.  Or Philly.  Or New York.

          1. on WXEL in Cleveland in 1951 when he coined the term rock ‘n roll.

He played rhythm and blues music, but because of the Jim Crow mentality that was in effect at the time, he had to come up with a different name or white people wouldn’t buy the records (also called “race music” at the time).  He renamed the music rock ‘n roll.

That was, of course, before Alan Freed was discredited in the Payola scandal.

    1. as the country’s second-largest banking center and with an up-and-coming African American mayor. North Carolina also has one of the fastest growing Hispanic populations. Sounds like an excellent location to trumpet tax and immigration reform over the next two years.

      1. What’s their average humidity at that point? 80%? 85%?

Note to self: Do not fight to be delegate.

Why does the location have to be so damn political? 😉

  1. Which is: Try to win a Southern state in 2012.

Hold onto North Carolina, at least. Florida, if possible. Anything else would be, as they say in New Orleans, a lagniappe.
