Because California Sen. Kamala Harris is the Vice President-Elect, California Gov. Gavin Newsom was required to select someone to replace her for the remainder of her Senate term.
On Monday, Newsom selected California Secretary of State Alex Padilla for the job. Padilla’s selection may not have been a huge surprise, but watch this video of the moment he learns that he is being asked to serve in the U.S. Senate. As President Trump closes out his term in office, this is a nice reminder that not all politicians are concerned solely with how a new office benefits them personally.
His appointment will make history. But the @AlexPadilla4CA I know is far more interested in changing history — especially for the working men and women of our state and country.
I can think of no one better to represent the state of California as our next United States Senator. pic.twitter.com/xiAzpTS42Y

Alex Padilla is the American dream embodied. How awesome is that ?
Thank you for putting this up. The reaction is great.
Padilla will be up for election in 2022, right? And then the 6 year term election in 2024?
No, the election in 2022 is for the 6-year term since Harris was elected in 2016.
Tremendous pick.
Why can't CD-3 come up w/a a candidate for Congress of anything close to that caliber?
Simple answer: It's CD3.
Longer answer: <insert here>
Because no rational Republican can get the support of the majority crazies. And Democrats don't have much of a chance with the district as drawn.
Meanwhile at 1600 Penn…
Who am I to judge? This kind of bribery works in farm country…
And this is why so many people think farmers are dumb. They were if they fell for this.
Federal farm subsidies are going to make up 39% of US farm income in 2020. (that glorious fist of Adam Smith, yo). As V often points out, it ain't welfare if it's a white, rural guy on the receiving end. I don't have an issue with safety nets – it's the hypocrisy of one class thinking they have earned theirs, while an array of social nets to keep our populace educated, healthy, properly nourished, and with the tools we need for them to be productive (just like our farms) are evil socialism.
