Diane Ravitch, public education partisan, sounds the clarion call

  • by: DefenseDenver

Here is the full video from the Diane Ravitch event on Thursday night.  It is an hour and a half long, but it’s definitely worth your while to watch in its entirety.

Enjoy.  Then come back and discuss the future of public education with us.

    1. She was already in town for the Association of School Executives (or some such) conference.  She believes in public education, so she waived her fee.

      Ask her.

Now…to the merits of what she presented.

  1. If you didn’t watch any of the video, or if your comments/questions are not about the merits of what she’s discussing, we will not answer.

    Thanks.

      1. An hour and a half? Couldn’t this have been edited down to the essentials?

Reducing dialogue to sound bites, reducing communication to video clips, is one of our problems.

          1. I believe you have, too. What was the reaction?

Know what would’ve been super shocking? If they’d bothered to write an actual diary explaining which parts they agree with the most and why. Or maybe what they didn’t agree with so much and thought could be improved. Or maybe how they plan to implement any good ideas in Denver schools.

Instead they posted a video repeatedly and immediately took the victim “you’re all too stupid to have this discussion” route. Fine. Hey! Speaking of fines…

And while we’re on punishment: Didn’t Libertad get the PB for spamming with videos?

              1. and now can’t make it fit into your “everyone’s out to get us for being the community!” persona.

Or you’re Bush, Jr. In which case it’s an honor to have you with us, ass.

        1. just because I don’t want to sit through the pointless introductions, asides, and such, I suddenly just want the sound bites? You know, instead of the main body of her remarks?

That old saying about “When we ASSUME we make an ASS of U and ME” is wrong. It only makes an ass of U.

          1. all of Ravitch’s remarks, I would not have jumped on you. I did assume you meant less than that. Of course, you assumed others knew what you meant by “essentials.” “Edited down to the essentials” does not convey clearly that you meant all of Ravitch’s speech. If that is what you meant, good for you. Just say so.

And, of course, editing out anything would have brought on outrage from the critics here, so they did the right thing to post it all even if that irritated you–openness, transparency, etc.

And just for the record (and Aristotle, I am not assuming anything about you here, but writing for anyone reading)–I know little about the controversy with DefenseDenver, etc., and am not commenting on that. I just think Ravitch is worth listening to in the entirety. She drank a certain variety of the reform/charter KoolAid for a long time. Facts and research changed her view of what is true reform.

  2. Really, really strong.

Pitching wins pennants – and they’ve got that.

Of course, it’s pitching in September and October that wins pennants and we’ll have to wait and see for that.

However, I am looking forward to this summer. My season tix are good, my parking space is close enough and not much beats baseball in LODO.

      1. So the bats went cold. It happens.

My team from birth has been accused of relocating to the Philippines so often that all my file folders are multi colored.

  3. I discuss public education all the time.

    A lot.

Sometimes with great passion. Sometimes with humor. Always with facts and honesty.

How is John McBride affiliated with Defense Denver?

I mean aside from being the media director?

Is it just coincidence that the guy who filed the recall petition is you r media director? Or is that part  of the DD strategy ?

Does your community membership support John McBride?
