Dueling Rallies Today, "Tea Party" Sans Permit

  • by: Colorado Pols

UPDATE #3: Lynn Bartels reports, none other than Gregory Golyansky of Ken Buck campaign infamy spoke at the “Tea Party” rally. Where he proceeded to embarrass them all! Said Golyansky: “These people are storm troopers of communism. We must defeat them. I never realized there was that much scum on government payrolls.”

According to Bartels, this was a bit much, even for the Shawn Mitchells of the world.

UPDATE #2: From the “Tea Party” counterrally:

UPDATE: From FOX 31’s Eli Stokols (below) and Rep. Mark Ferrandino (below right):

Reporter Lynn Bartels of the Denver paper writes this morning about two rallies coming up at the Capitol today, both supporting and opposed to the actions of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to curtail collective bargaining rights for that state’s employees.

At noon, the AFL-CIO and friends will gather on the steps of the Capitol for a rally in support of public employees in Wisconsin. We’ve heard about some tension among different pro-labor sides; some of whom want to basically turn the event into an attack on Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper’s recently proposed budget, versus others who consider likening the standoff in Wisconsin with anything Hickenlooper has proposed to be ridiculous and counterproductive. We do expect to hear a strong call for a ballot initiative to unwind Colorado’s ongoing fiscal problems, and for Hickenlooper to put on his parachute and work his ingratiating magic to help pass it.

The Examiner picks up the story on the counter-demonstration being organized by Jeff Crank and the Colorado chapter of Americans for Prosperity:

An article on the Denver Post’s blog “The Spot” says they received an email with the subject line “Stand Up Against Union Thuggery in Denver this Tuesday” from Jeff Crank, a conservative talk radio host and state director of the group…

The New York Times reports that the Virginia-based “Americans For Propserity” is funded by billionaire brothers Charles G. and David H. Koch, who also were large contributors to the Gov. Walker election campaign.

While the pro-union forces have obtained a permit for their rally, the anti-union group does not, according to the Post, and therefore will be restricted to holding their protest on the sidewalk. They will gather on the Lincoln Street side of the Capital.

Despite referring to union officials as “thugs”, the Post reports that Crank has asked those who attend on his group’s behalf to refrain from being confrontational and disruptive.

  1. I’m dusting off my VHS copies of “Matewan” and “Norma Rae” this week and watching them with my kid.  We need a reminder of what real thuggery looks like.

  2. I think you’re all at this rally, aren’t you?

@EliStokols: Casso is actually outside on Capitol steps, joining in latest labor chant, “Tax the rich!” #COleg #WIunions

Man, I hope WSYS gets some awesome footage.

        1. Casso is toast. There’s no way he will ever be allowed to say inflammatory remarks that piss people off ever again. And he’s never done it in the past.

          1. Look, is he gonna piss off his opponents? Yes. Will he have a fight? Yes.

But it’s a presidential election year, Hispanics will turn out a bit more than midterms, the hardest election is the one after being appointed (2010 because he ran unopposed in 2008) and he passed it pretty good. On top of that, his comments will endear him to working family organizations which will pour more money in and at $4,000 a pop from SDCs that’s not to bad a trade off.

  3. For a labor organized protest, this crowd looks pretty small – or am I missing a part of the picture?

Of course, it was organized over the weekend; I didn’t hear about it until Sunday, and was very disappointed they couldn’t hold it yesterday when more people could have made it.

    1. had to get back to work by the time they started chanting “Tax the Rich” which came after the speaker on the bullhorn said “We need to start having a serious talk about revenue changes to this state”

I think it’s hillarious/sad that McNulty kept the House in chambers  untill the rally broke up in order to prevent the Dem Reps from showing their support. They did, however, lean out the windows much to the crowd’s delight (that must be when Ferrandino got that photo). Was glad to see the Senate out there in quiet force, though.

    1. We can always count on Libby to post up some inane item to prove he knows what the HTML IMG tag does.

Good job Bud.  You are showing a prophetic vision of Muamar Walker’s future. This egotistical overreach by Muamar is going to tie him up for quite a while and has spawned a counter movement to match the Tea Party in intensity and action.

Anti-Republican extremism protests might not prevail this time but the pendulum swings pretty quickly nowadays and it comes right before 2012 which is similar to the Tea Party protests in 2009 which resulted in a wave election in 2010.

  4. Wait a minute, wait a minute, since when is “storm troopers” an offensive term for right-wingers? Steve Bosley didn’t have any trouble describing himself and his fellow teabaggers that way.

    1. heavy on the retired grey haired crowd.  I came with a threesome of late middle aged suburban ladies, none of us over  5’1″. Could we be that scary?

    2. “These people are storm troopers of communism. We must defeat them. I never realized there was that much scum on government payrolls.”

Hope those damn government scum serving in Afghanistan don’t think this prick represents the views of all American citizens.

  5. are occurring at the same time that life and death protests are taking place in some of the most repressive countries in the world.  The subconscious linking of images of dictators railing about how they will never compromise with similar images of Republicans pushing their no compromise positions just strengthens the perception that Republicans are just domestic dictator wannabes.

The Wisconsin governor going on TV tonight and threatening workers isn’t going to be great PR.  Everyone knows he is going to lie and to lie and threaten is going to make the association just that much stronger.

Power to the people and to hell with the dictators.
