NBC News Calls Georgia for Ossoff; Democrats Control Senate

  • by: Colorado Pols

As NBC News reports:

Jon Ossoff defeated Republican David Perdue and Raphael Warnock won over GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler in Georgia, NBC News projects.

The twin wins for Democrats in Tuesday’s election give the party control of the Senate, which will stand at 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans, allowing incoming Vice President Kamala Harris to cast tie-breaking votes. The Georgia election results are a big boost for President-elect Joe Biden, who would have faced stiff opposition from Republicans had they retained the Senate.

CNN is also projecting that Ossoff will defeat Perdue.

    1. People get appointed to fill vacant Senate seats, but serve only until the next general election, when the election determines who will fill the remainder of the term.

The seat continues in the three-class rotation, so the regularly scheduled election would happen either in 2 or 4 more years.

Loeffler had an undistinguished year in the upper chamber, and then lost.  Isaakson's term was up in 2022, so that's when the "regular" election will be.

  1. What the actual……..Schumer just called Pence “Mr. President”. Schumer is pretty careful with his words. What just happened?

Nevermind….I suppose Pence is the “President” of the Senate. Just wishful thinking.
