Homeless Youth Prevention Passes, 64-J. Paul Brown

  • by: Colorado Pols

It’s almost always interesting when a bill passes unanimously–except for one holdout. That’s what happened a little earlier this afternoon with House Bill 1079, an uncontroversial bill to streamline services available to homeless youth, and expand the definition of “homeless youth” to include ages under 15 and 18-21.

Like we said, this bill passed the Colorado House today on a vote of 64-1, the only “no” vote coming from Rep. J. Paul Brown of HD-59. We haven’t yet seen any explanation from Rep. Brown as to why he thinks this bill was a bad idea when nobody else did, including all of his fellow House Republicans. But often times when this happens, the explanation is…interesting–like when former Sen. Dave Schultheis told the press he voted against HIV testing for pregnant mothers because it was his hope “that, yes, that person may have AIDS.”

We can’t wait to hear what Rep. Brown has against homeless kids.

    1. except that he’s new to the legislature and what I just read on his website:

      http://www.jpaulbrown.com/inde

I did get to listen to (too) much of his questioning of witnesses during the Agricultural Committee hearings this past Monday, and while I did not get the impression that he was “heartless,”  I did get the impression that he might not be the “quickest” Republican in the House this session.

      1. Sheep rancher and one of the biggest users of the Predator Program in La Plata County.  Adamant that no one should be dependent on government, except for him.

He was County Commissioner 20 years ago.  Lost re-election bid after 4 years.  He was before my time, but the stories I’ve heard are not good.

    1. Didn’t you read dear bj’s theory — if it ain’t collapsing, don’t fix it.

Demonstrating the long-term memory of a sand flea, he asserted that bridges don’t actually collapse because he’s never seen one fail.

  1. It it most certainly not always interesting. See a bunch of Bruce’s votes. Lundberg’s before that.

I once saw a single no vote on an amendment to add a comma. Yeah, a comma. Who hates punctuation?!?

That being said; Brown is a douche. He voted against it because it’s a government handout for technical adults. No, I haven’t heard him say it. But if you ever hear a reason, that’ll be it. Probably with something stupid thrown in about how they could just be unemployed snowboarders living at home (what do you call a snowboarder without a girlfriend?) screwing the tax payers. Yeah! Screwing YOU!!
