What you can do to fight for progress this week (January 25)

In just a few days in office, President Joe Biden has taken swift action to begin unwinding the last four years of neglect and corruption in Washington under Donald Trump. Nowhere has this been more true than taking action to combat the climate change crisis—an issue on which Colorado has already been taking the lead in the absence of leadership from the outgoing Trump administration.

And that’s just the beginning. From reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights to immigration reform and crushing the COVID-19 pandemic, in less than a week we’ve seen proof that change for the better is at hand. It’s a strange feeling to be proud of our what the occupant of the White House is doing, and to have a Congress ready to actually pass good bills into law is very exciting.

The top priority for the new progressive majorities in the U.S. House and Senate, of course, is comprehensive economic relief for Americans to get us through the COVID-19 pandemic. From there, the focus turns to H.R. 1, the For The People Act to extend landmark reforms we’ve made in Colorado on voting rights, gerrymandering reform, and ethics in government to the whole country. Click here to learn more about the For The People Act, and contact your legislators to urge their support.

Are you one of the over 17,000 who have signed our petition calling for Reps. Lauren Boebert and Doug Lamborn to resign? After helping incite violence at the U.S. Capitol and continuing to frighten her colleagues and Capitol security by defying metal detectors set up following the January 6th insurrection, Boebert is at it again–this time by receiving a “gift” semi-auto pistol from a known white supremacist militia member in possible violation of congressional ethics rules and Colorado law. [1] If you haven’t already, take a moment to sign the petition calling on Boebert and Lamborn to step down for everything they’ve done in 2021 to endanger American democracy.

And here are a few more ways to make a difference for the week of January 25:

History Colorado: InSights & InPerson / Connections: Queer City of the Plains

Please join us for the kick-off event for the 2021 InSights & InPerson / Connections series featuring Brendan Picker-Mahoney, Public Art Program Administrator for Denver Arts & Venues. This program will reflect on the 2020 initiative – “Queer City of the Plains: An Artistic Look at Denver’s LBGTQ History” – that included five contemporary art installations focusing on storytelling, camp, resistance, and the LGBTQ+ experience in Denver from 1859 to the present.

When: Tuesday, January 26 at 6:00pm

Colorado Immigrants Rights Coalition: Car Rally to Demand Immigration Reform NOW // Rally de carros para exigir la reforma migratoria AHORA

On January 27th, CIRC will join the launch of Fair Immigration Reform Movement’s (FIRM) national campaign for immigration reform. We will rally through downtown Denver to make our voices heard all the way to Washington DC and send a message that Coloradans want immediate executive and legislative actions that protect and bring justice to all immigrants.

9to5 Colorado: 2021 Legislative Kickoff | Inicio Legislativo

When: Wednesday, January 27 at 6:30pm

Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition: Drive-in movie and panel discussion

Join us and Community Cinema this coming Friday for a showing of award-winning film “Just Mercy,” followed by a panel discussion hosted by CIRC on the intersection of racial justice and our legal system!
