What you can do to fight for progress this week (February 8)

After nearly five years at the helm of ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, today I announced I’ll be stepping down in the coming months pending the hire of a new executive director.

Since our founding all the way back in 2003, ProgressNow Colorado has played a central role in the evolution of this state not just from red to blue, but into an example of a cohesive and functional progressive movement that achieves tangible, long term results.

Over the last four and a half years, I’m proud to have assembled a team of some of the best digital organizing, video production, and political communications professionals to be found anywhere in the commercial or nonprofit sectors. The leadership and support this team has provided to progressive activists, partner organizations, and issue campaigns at every level of Colorado politics has changed the course of history.

As the chairwoman of the ProgressNow Colorado Board of Directors Leticia Martinez said today, the work is not over. “Whether our brand is on the work product or we’re providing logistical and creative support for partner grassroots activists behind the scenes, we’ve never been more successful at our core mission of promoting progressive solutions to community problems and holding conservatives accountable than these past few years.” Just as we have for over fifteen years, ProgressNow Colorado remains the foundation of progressive success in our state. With your continued support this organization is just getting started.

With that, here are a few great ways to take action for the week of February 8:

Colorado Legislature’s Frontline Healthcare Workers: Virtual Townhall

Join Senator Leroy Garcia, Representative Yadira Caraveo and Representative Kyle Mullica for a virtual town hall! As the only elected officials in the Colorado Legislature who are also healthcare workers working during the pandemic, they will share their perspective on COVID-19, updates on vaccine distribution, and insight into the upcoming legislative session.

Xcelerate Climate Action Campaign Launch Party

Following a summer of record wildfires, it’s time to turn up the heat on Colorado’s largest utility and fossil fuel burner, Xcel Energy. Xcel is the only utility in the state with plans to burn coal in our state past 2030. With two coal plants and nine gas plants whose pollution has no end in sight, it’s clear that we need to Xcelerate Climate Action and the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. We’ll cover the details of Xcel’s fossil fuel problem, its impact on Colorado communities, and the opportunities we have to push Xcel beyond fossil fuels in 2021. Join 350 Colorado and Colorado Sierra Club as we gear up for a big year of climate action on Xcel Energy in 2021!

Colorado Sierra Club: Tri-State in 2021: What’s Ahead for Rural Colorado’s Energy Transition, with Tri-State CEO Duane Highley

Colorado Consumer Health Initiative: Prescription Drug Town Hall

Want to hear from policymakers & share your own ideas about how prescription drug affordability impacts Colorado? One Colorado: 2021 Legislative Kickoff

The 2021 legislative session will soon reconvene and there will be several bills that will impact the lives of LGBTQ Coloradans and their families. We’re hosting a virtual legislative kickoff to give you an opportunity to meet pro-equality legislators and learn about what we’re expecting in 2021. CCG CO Legislative Priorities Assembly

Coloradans for the Common Good will convene parents, educators, faith, labor and other community leaders to talk to legislators and other elected officials about pausing standardized testing, expanding internet access, and protecting education funding.

SURJ Denver: From Conversation to Action Series: “White People, Safety, Policing, and Threat Self-Response”

The facilitators will briefly share some of their own experiences with policing, their threat/thought responses and how these impulses connect to the white supremacist history of policing, facilitate a dialogue about how we as white people can think about community and safety in ways that do not include policing, and conclude with tools for de-escalation and internal self-regulation, and policing alternatives resources.
