Obama Releases Long-Form Birth Certificate; Can We Grow Up Now?

  • by: Colorado Pols

The White House issued a press release today that includes the long-form birth certificate of President Barack Obama, showing (again) that Obama was indeed born in the United States. As Politico reports:

In an extraordinary move, President Barack Obama on Wednesday sought to put an end to questions about his citizenship, releasing a longer version of his birth certificate and calling on the media and conspiracy theorists to move on.

“We do not have time for this kind of silliness,” Obama told reporters in the White House briefing room. “We’ve got better stuff to do. I’ve got better stuff to do.”

Businessman Donald Trump escalated the issue in recent weeks, thrusting the story back into the headlines and, as Obama scolded the media Wednesday, diverting attention from more important issues.

Obama said the nation’s work will not get done if people are “making stuff up” and getting distracted by “sideshows and carnival barkers.”…

…”Normally, I wouldn’t comment on something like this,” Obama said. “I’ve got other things to do.”

But Obama said he decided on the release because the conspiracy theory over where he was born had eclipsed the debate on the budget several weeks ago.

We’re under no illusion that the release of Obama’s long-form birth certificate will finally quiet the conspiracy theorists, Tea Partiers and those who make money playing to them (like Peter Boyles, who plans to keep on keeping on with the birth certificate nonsense). But what this move should do is put a stop to any birth certificate stories appearing in any legitimate media outlets.

There was never a real excuse for the media to play host to this nonsense conspiracy theory, but now…no newspaper, TV network or any other outlet has any justification whatsoever to continue to run stories about this. If a legitimate news outlet continues to play up this story as though Obama’s citizenship were actually in question, then they might as well start running daily stories about how the moon landing was faked and how Elvis and 2Pac are living together on a deserted island.

If any legitimate news outlet continues this story now, they’re basically saying, We don’t care about facts. At all. It doesn’t matter if a reporter has quotes from various people saying, “I don’t believe Obama was born in the U.S.,” because that opinion is completely and utterly absurd and irrelevant. You can’t run with a story just because you have quotes from people who don’t know or don’t care about the truth.

This story should have been over a long, long time ago. But it is definitely over now.

  1. The same geniuses that have been running around for 3 years claiming he isn’t a citizen of the United States have now moved the goal posts and want his scholastic records released. And then after that, his dental records. And then a written statement of the first time he fucked a girl.

Get it? This will never end because this crowd is too fucking stupid to know when they’ve been outwitted and outflanked.

      1. They never had an excuse to report this as a legitimate story in the first place and that hasn’t stopped them for three years. Done with the birther scandal and moving on to his academic record next. Bank on it.

  2. (meaning FOX news?) that have been carrying this story — and that means we’ve now accepted the newspeak definition of legitimate to mean not-at-all-legitimate — will not stop running the story!  Are you kidding?

The storyline will only change slightly now — “Why now even after the release of these purported identity documents have so many good, patriotic, Americans continued to question the legitimacy of that Kenyan Muslim socialist terrorist poser?  We report, you decide.  More fair and balanced news at 10:00.”

I personally cannot understand why the White House would give this issue and the bloviating morons any oxygen.  Call me baffled.

    1. against the birther bills being brought up in multiple states (including ours). And Trump, who just a mere 48 hours ago claimed he had “proof” that Obama’s certificate did not exist, looks like the thin skinned, defensive fool that he is.

          1. Actually, in listening to Trump today, I think he could be a problem.  He reminded me of the grumpy old men my father used to meet every Saturday morning to discuss politics over breakfast.  As irritating as he is, he says what a lot of people think.

            1. with a group of egomaniacal New York millionaires with really bad hair and even worse “reality” television shows???

My dad used to have breakfast with a group of wizend old cronies from the packing house.  I thought they were a bunch of insufferable Goldwater/Nixon/Reagan-loving kooks . . . (but they did have solutions to all of the country’s problems) . . . no orangeish-hairish head coverings however.

              1. Actually, golfing buddies.

But they knew how to solve all the world’s problems.

Ignore Trump at your peril.  He resonates with some people.  A lot of people.

I think it’s important to take all potential opponents seriously.  I guess it’s just a thing with me.

                    1. I think I just figured out his China plan! Lease our name to put on a bunch of buildings. #WhereTheMoneyIs

    2. who are deeeply invested in believing but big deal.  They aren’t potential Obama or Dem voters anyway.

It does completely marginalize the view and forces serious Rs farther away from it and closes the “I take him at his word” loophole.

Even on Fox, Jon Stewart recently ran a clip of O’Reilly completely, no ifs ands or buts, rejecting all birther claims and stating, no ifs, ands or buts, that Obama was born in Hawaii. Couldn’t have been clearer.  Also rejected a few other tall tales.

I don’t think this was a mistake at all. Coming at the same time as the widely shown clips of anger over the Ryan plan, I think Obama is getting much more bang for the buck out of this than the birthers are.  This will clearly divide anyone who claims to be anywhere near the middle from the fringe. No R pol who wants the greater part of the middle can go on doing the “I take him at his word” wink, wink dance to please that fringe. This could cause enough anger on the fringe to send some of the birthers to third, fourth and fifth party statement voting. Good move. Good timing. For a change.

  3. …actually, in light of his comments on YouTube, and based on the charges that were brought forth, Birther Colonel could be charged with even more stuff.

BUt I doubt it – PV0 Lakin is scheduled to be released from prison in three weeks, and I hope he makes himself available for comment on how monumentally STUPID he was for throwing away a distinguished Army career…

  4. is a book by wingnut Jerome “Swift Boat” Corsi that is due to be released on May 17.

Despite today’s news, it is the No. 36 best-selling book on Amazon.

Next book is Barack Obama: Did You Know He’s Black?

    1. We’re impressed you could write an entire book about the subject. Even if you believe that Obama wasn’t born in the U.S., how many pages can you write about it without repeating yourself?

      1. After you bring in the Trilateral Commission, Roswell, UN, and water fluoridation, you’ve got a book.

Corsi’s book (not even released yet!) was pumped a couple weeks ago by Drudge and made it up to No. 1 on Amazon then.

    2. Right wing groups are known to buy books like this by the truckload, and distribute them for free at their events. Placing high on the bestseller lists doesn’t indicate that a mass of ordinary citizens are the ones making these purchases.

  5. after he shows them his long form certificate in Oklahoma.

This is what Kerry should have done with his military records over his Silver Star.  If he would have released them when the Swift Boat accusations started, he would have shown that the officers who were denouncing him were the same ones who wrote commendation reports for him immediately after the incident.  If Kerry had done what Obama is doing, he would have snuffed the Swifter Boaters by the end of August.

Obama might also be late on his disclosures but he is shifting the debate back to issues in time for the 2012 campaign which is no small feat.  More power too him for allowing the country to see his personal information and exposing what a fraud this scam really was all along.

    1. I also remain totally disappointed with the “mainstream media” for presenting issues like this as if there were any sort of merit at all.  CNN et al are just as guilty as Fox in this respect:

Was President Obama really born in the United States, as he claims ?

Does Donald Trump have a real shot to be our next President ?

Are you fucking kidding me ?  This is news today.

can we stop addressing the idiotic nonsense as if it had any validity whatsoever ? Can some sort of judgement come into play ?  Nevermind, I know the answer.

      1. They have a lot of time to fill, and finding, researching and producing real news costs time and money. The crazy stuff, believe it or not, bumps ratings, and it’s cheap to produce. Ratings are all that matter.

They get around the facty parts by (accurately) quoting the loons of the day, then quote the rational who oppose the loons.

Repeat as necessary, and push those rating points.

  6. I always thought Obama’s game plan was to let the teabaggers and potential Republican Presidential candidates make fools out of themselves.

To that end I think he should have sat on this another year so that it would have a greater effect on the 2012 election.

If he waited he might have run into a republicanism debate where the moderator asked for a show of hands for: “Yes or No – Do you believe the President was born in the USA?”

If any of them took the bait to win support of the birther crowd, he could then release this document and make the whole Republican field look unfavorable to independents and other rational thinkers.

      1. Why do you think he released it now?

Again the Machiavellian in me thinks it might be related to the Gitmo Wikileaks or less likely the rise of Donald Trump in the Polls (Because he is a Bither).

Maybe he really did think thing have gotten way to “silly” and it was just time to end it, but I think there must be some political calculation on the timing.

        1. with birth certificate producing bills in the works or passed, clearly directed against him, in the lurch. He’s got a perfectly legit long form now.  No court battles needed to get him on any state’s ballot no matter whether the silly laws pass or not. Even our own dryer will now have to stop being hysterical over red states delaying putting Obama on the ballot.

All they’ll have to show for months of work is a lot of inconvenience for everybody including their own candidates, who will probably have a harder time getting anything better than the universally  accepted short forms than a sitting President does, and, by the way, they’d have to defend not accepting those in court. Unless they withdraw their own legislation which will be an awkward admission that it was all about racist, xenophobic hounding of Obama in the first place.

Also the “I take him at his word dance”  has just been brought to a screeching halt.  Now how will they wink at the birthers?  Boehner had the nerve to poo poo this by saying it’s all been settled for a long time, which of course is more definite than anythng he’s ever said before.  Cantor and Palin had the nerve to poo poo it as a distraction from the real issues as if it’s Obama’s fault for making a big deal of it for the past two and a half years.

Nobody who has ever heard any of these GOP leaders dancing on the subject is ever going to buy that and, right now, a return to the issues, like the Ryan Reverse Robin Hood Plan, is just peachy with Dems.   There are few issues where polls don’t show incredible public support for Dem ideas like letting the Bush tax cuts expire on the wealthiest instead of draconian cuts to social security and medicare benefits.

Both network and cable are gleefully making R after R look like idiots, especially the Donald (if he even is an R). And he’s really sensitive about being made fun of  so, no matter what he says about being proud, you can bet this is excruciating for him.  Catch him refusing to even look at the certificate when a news producer (I think NBC) tried to show it to him?  Talk about a bad hair day. Well, for the Donald, that’s every day.

Nope.  I’m not joining those griping about Obama just giving the circus more attention because I think he’s doing a terrific job of showing, once and for all, just who the clowns are.

          1. I especially agree that the Paul Ryan – destroying Medicare to give to the Rich – town halls look very bad for Republicans right now.

Lets hope your right that this birther stuff dies down quick and gives more airtime to Republicans getting hammered by their constituents.

            1. The Don will announce his presidential plans during the May 15 finale of “Celebrity Apprentice.”

I watched his press conference this morning.  He said with a broad smile that people are going to be very, very surprised by what he will say.

My guess is he will run as an Indie.

I think he’ll boast that he already beat every Republican in the polls.

              1. But if he announces as an indie he’ll have to forego the TV show from that point to the end of the election or to whenever he drops out.  Also he’ll have to reveal his finances and admit to the world that he’s not a billionaire, just a great big blowhard who owed the banks so much they couldn’t let him go under.  Now most of the supposed Trump Empire is just stuff he was paid to lend his celebrity name to. He might also have to answer questions  about the investigators he allegedly sent to Hawaii and what they came up with.

I’m thinking the Donald will announce that he’s giving up the run so as not to break America’s heart by depriving us of his super TV show, probably his major source of income at this point.   I mean What other legit billionaire business man is out there performing for us on a silly “reality” show? Warren Buffet doesn’t have to sing or do tricks for his supper.

                1. But it’s not going to happen.  He should do it- but in all of his public actions when has he ever put up or shut up?  I think he’s much more likely to keep the streak going.

He’ll run for the GO(T)P nomination which would be great, I may register R just to caucus for him.

I don’t think he’s ever paid income taxes.  I don’t believe he was ever bankrupt. And he’ll continue hiding his and his companies’ finances.

              2. If he runs indie 98%+ of his votes will be otherwise R voters.  There aren’t going to be a lot of Trump Dems.

Which means, unless the GO(T)P nominee can win by a wide, wide margin, Trump will guarantee an Obama win.

    1. BlueCat makes good points but I agree that it would have been better to release them in 2012. If I were a WH political strategist, discrediting the Tea Bagger cause celebre makes more sense in an election year. Let the wacky state legislatures waste time now and then hang them out to dry later. I would imagine some (maybe all) of the 11 GOP “birthers” in the State Senate are quietly breathing a sigh of relief that this is over.

      1. insiders told him they did it now because, with so much Trump propelled publicity and media attention, the polls were starting to show some movement in the number of indies expressing some doubt.  This was directed at them and at the media.  So the judgement was made that they’d better stick the fork in it now even though later would have been even more fun.  I’m glad they did.  The Swift Boaters showed that rising above for too long can be a mistake.

Sure they’ll claim that anything can be faked and why did he” hide’ it for so long but really that just means that no one, not even any of them, can absolutely prove anything with any document.

If we have legit papers that are recognized as such by the government, that’s all that can be asked and Obama produced his perfectly legit short form, the only kind he could get without being granted a special exception to the law by Hawaii, years ago.

Good luck (not) to any of these birthers or their favored candidates if anyone demands anything more from them. Not being President, they won’t be able to get the exceptions they need to produce. That includes most of the Republican legislators who passed or are passing birther bills.

  7. Or at least that was the MSM’s excuse as they covered for the guy without doing any investigation or providing any hard evidence whatsoever. Looks like Obama finally called their bluff.

    1. Any of it? Hawaii’s health department has to approve a waiver. It’s actually kind of a big deal to the state as it’s a slap in the face to their authority.

      1. It’s actually kind of a big deal to the state as it’s a slap in the face to their authority.

        You are actually right on.

This could be the start of a beautiful friendship.,…nah.

        1. So I hope it IS the start of a friendship.

You two don’t fight about black and white.  You fight about shades of gray.  Imagine how powerful you’d be together on the same team.

          1. This blog, I think, is about discussion and reasoning. When someone won’t read any part of the discussion and then tells people that they’re in denial and don’t know how Presidents are elected, it bothers me. I hope it always will.

Look, I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or whatever the hell the beej is supposed to be, getting an unmovable opinion from talk radio (or anywhere else) is, imo, what’s wrong with this country. Were I just okie dokie with that, I’d hang out a Denny’s and listen to the chatter.

    2. Bush’s attendance records in Alabama or why he got released before he why there was no record of why he was allowed to skip a physical to remain on flight status that required the first drug test in their history.  I totally agree with you that the MSM gives some really lame excuses to not investigate any red flags further.  I can’t believe I actually agree with you that the MSM is a discredited media that works as corporate whores to hide dirt and promote sensationalism.  Lordy it is a weird day today.

      1. in Bill Murray’s Stripes.  Aren’t mutts and mongrels the same.

Loved your command of the Kings English Ralph.  Definitely five stars for the best use of the word mongrel in a biting (pun) post today.

        1. I agree that America is a country of mongrels.  That’s what makes us great.  My mutt dogs are far healthier than any purebreds.

But that concept might piss off some inbred Okies.  BJ can probably answer for them. I can’t speak to that myself.

          1. I’ve got a fancy bred cat and a shelter cat. Same age. Got them at the same time.  Compared to the fancy male, my alley cat female is a freakin genius.

      2. The race card is overplayed. At first it was cute, then cynical, then shameless, then pointless. It’s just annoying now. Shut up already, nobody hates Obama because he is black. I actually think Kenyans are pretty cool.

        * pause *

Yes, I believe Obama was born in Hawaii. But his Dad was Kenyan, which makes him half-Kenyan. I’m half-German. Big deal. Why the heck do people care so much about race?

        1. … says the creationist. The sky must be so so pretty in your world, where Jesus loves you for denying all realities (evolution, the very existence of racism, etc.) that don’t comport with your kindergartener-level fantasy version of Christianity. I bet there’s some evidence the Republican voters of your home county deem you just as much of a joke as I do.

            1. idiot.  He’s referring to a specific idiot, idiot.  Got a mirror?

And, yet once again, you’ve underdone your underdone self . . . nice touch.

                1. meant standing up for personal responsibility.

You’re an idiot.  Take some personal responsibility and admit it.  Quit blaming people who simply correctly point it out to others.

            2. … the guy who’s nastily insulted Muslims and basically anyone who isn’t a pea-brained creationist.

I know a lot of brilliant Christians as devout as you think you are and about as conservative. They’re just not bigoted and imbecilic like you are.

              1. I just realized that BJ probably belongs to the First Imbecilic Church.  He’s an apostle of Imbecilism!

BJ, you imbecile, we have been discriminating against your Imbecilic religion.  So sorry.

              2. “pea-brained creationist” You certainly have no problem insulting Christians. I never insulted Muslims, and I certainly never called them “pea-brained”. Pot, meet kettle.

  8. Now, if the MSM is going to do anything.  They have to go after the lies…of which there are many.

    1) Hospital records are not kept in perpetuity. State laws dictate how long such records are kept and then they are destroyed.  Hospitals post a notice in the paper that records from such and such a date and before are being destroyed and if you want a copy of your record, notify the hospital by a certain date.  In Colorado, I understand the records are kept for ten years.  The three questions are: How long does state law dictate such records have to be kept in New York, Tennessee and Hawaii?

This is where the Larkin case gets real strange.  As a doctor he knew that hospital records from fifty years ago would not be available.  He would have no way of independently “verifying” the authenticity of the so-called “long form.”  Yet, some lawyer, who claimed to be his friend, claimed on talk radio that Larkin was going to use hospital records and his own “experts.”   That simply does not make any sense.

Furthermore, his lawyers should have explained that an oath to uphold the Constitution implies the responsibility to accept the “full faith and credit” clause of that document….that means one state has to explain as valid the legal documents (and laws) from another state….now, this does not strictly apply to the military..but there is no provision for a military man or woman to demand proof of anything, absent evidence of fraud.  Plus, the electoral college procedure required that Obama show proof of citizenship…which he did, as Bush before him, with a passport.  Larkin’s lawyers should have made sure that Larkin knew that…..so WTF is going on with him????

    2) The most important thing I know about boyles is he calls Hitler, “die fuehrer”  which means “the leader.”

      1. foot printing babies for records instead of keepsakes. Or both I guess. Not for healthy, happy babies. But for abandoned, dead babies without a way to be connected to a parent who needs to be punished.

Random rant. It’s just the sad way I know that the prints are useless and the certificate only good for baby books.

        1. were a match and the footprints were to identify which baby belonged to which mother if there ever was any confusion…..

I have no idea if this is true.  I would also tell you what my mother told me about where babies came from……What? is that laughing I hear?

    1. if you are non-white, and you plan to run for President of the United States, starting today there is an extra evidentiary standard, designed to satiate the racist lunatic fringe of our country. However, satisfying this standard alone may not put you over the bar of “questionability” so you may be required to furnish additional back up documentation as needed.

Right now, its your long form birth certificate.  Who knows what it’ll be in the next few decades.

Fucking sad.  I thought we were better than this.

      We’re not.

        1. It is imperative that no measures be tolerated that could suppress the vote of Hispanics and other minorities.

The “short form” birth certificate or any legal document verifying birth issued by any state should be rehabilitated as the way to prove citizenship by birth.

SOS should not be able to arbitrarily question anyone’s citizenship w/o evidence of fraud.

I will be interested to see what the repubs do next. …I don’t have a clue as to what that might be.  However, it is not over.

          1. The so called short form has to be accepted already.  It’s already the gold standard, no matter what goes on in the overheated imaginations of R legislators. Please try not to worry so much about this. It’s all most of the legislators who are now pushing this nonsense could produce anyway. It’s not that Rs aren’t trying to suppress the minority vote.  It’s just that this particular ploy now has a fork in it.

            1. So far anyway. This is the point I’ve been trying to make. I’ve asked for text of a bill proving me wrong because the bills I’ve read haven’t had a challenge clause. And since they’re only a page or two long, I probably would’ve noticed after reading specifically for it.

You’re right that the short form (being a certified verification of your birth) being the gold standard. No legislator has either has either had the balls, or access to the world’s dumbest bill drafter, to put a clause that would a) give a state the right to challenge another state’s certification or b) formally define “birth certificate” to mean “long form birth certificate.”

In fact, most of these bills will accept a passport, which has a whole section dedicated to proving citizenship without a birth certificate! My great aunt, being born in the middle of South Dakota in the 1920’s, had to do that. But once you’re identified, you are for life. Our license policies even have that kind of clause (once your picture is on file).

FWIW, even the AZ SoS says the AZ law would be unconstitutional and therefore unenforceable, even with a veto override, as a state can’t put a restriction like that on federal offices. http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetw

You’re also right that it’s just grandstanding. Red meat for the red base.

You’re wrong that this ploy ever made it the oven. It’s still in the freezer, waiting for its careless buyers to die and be thrown away by their children when cleaning the house to be sold. :'( RIP frozen ploy. R.I.P.

              1. if they tried to declare the short form not good enough they couldn’t possibly get anywhere. So even if you, wangless as you are, lose your long form, and even if a law is passed somewhere saying your short form or passport isn’t good enough, that law won’t last long enough to cause you any problems.

Just out of curiosity I pulled out all the family birth certificates to see what they are called. My sons from the early 80s is a raised seal long form copy that says, like Obama’s long form, “Certificate of Live Birth”.

My old 50s photo-stat (looks like the Donald’s) says “Certificate of Birth” and, having no raised seal, wasn’t acceptable when I needed to replace my long expired passport so I had to send in for a raised seal document in 2000.  What I got was a short form that said “Certification of Birth”.

The only document I could find with the actual words “Birth Certificate” was my husband’s hospital birth certificate, which, incidentally, is pretty short with no cute feet.  This one, with no particular legal standing, also was no good for getting a Passport so we also had to send for a new one for him. In 2000, we got a short form that says “Certificate of Live Birth”.

Apparently, the exact title on these things varies depending on the state and the period when issued.  The only constant I found studying these documents from three different states and ranging from late 40s to early 80s was that not one of the official, acceptable government documents actually was entitled “Birth Certificate”.

From interviews with birther GOP pols all over cable TV yesterday,it appeared that accurate information about these matters came as a surprise to them. As one talking head pointed out it really did appear as though these rightie back benchers got all their info from rightie conspiracy blogs and tabloids.

Maybe, before proceeding further, these birther pols should start with locating their own and their children’s certificates, see what they say and research which of those are acceptable for obtaining things like passports. With or without wang back up.

                1. so fully into the discussion. 🙂 It was missing that!

I had to check my own, as I said once before its little seal has nearly fallen completely now (why replacements are needed, recommended by the woman who registered me to vote), and it says “CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH”. Issued 12/28/1983 (a couple weeks after my entry to an ice filled world) from the state of Kansas. It’s the real deal, long form.

A trip to the suburban DMV for little Susie’s 16th birthday (or whenever kids get licenses now) being ruined by the lack of a BIRTH CERTIFICATE would’ve been great fun. (What to do with the brand new car?!?) For the Democrats. Not that I welcome calamities to prove points, but I think it would’ve been worth it. Dem majority everywhere for years and years!

                  1. I’m glad we were able to bring wangs

So exactly what are we talking about here, now?

                    1. cause I was really startled to hear about the little seal, and was kind of wondering what would cause it to nearly fall off and how the replacements might work?

Swear to God, I stopped and reread down to the parentheses at least three times before I finally saw the “Certificate of Live Birth” and was able to resume breathing.

  9. I turned on KOA, hoping to catch the Rockies, and instead got to hear some idiot talking to “hell of a job” Brownie about Obama’s birth certificate. The only possible conclusion that this birther can reach, with Brownie’s encouragement, is that the State of Hawaii is clearly in on the conspiracy.  Up until now, he only suspected it, but now that they have produced a long form birth certificate, it is proof positive that the State of Hawaii is in on the vast conspiracy to cover up the truth about Obama’s birth.

It reminds me of why we say “drinking the kool aid.”  If a thousand people were willing to commit suicide rather than admit that they probably made a mistake in following Jim Jones, it should not surprise me that people would rather believe (and concoct) elaborate and ridiculous conspiracy theories rather than believe that someone they deem “unworthy” is actually the duly elected president.

Perhaps Obama’s supporters will simply play the race card, and say because Obama was “Born While being Black” the racist registrar General put his certificate in the round file cabinet and if not for the intervention of a wonder liberal socialist worker who rescued the certificate from the abyss and stamped it with a file number, Obama wouldn’t even have a record.

This Obama Birth Certificate story has gone from the bizarre to the ridiculous and now we are moving on to the surreal.

PLEASE ANY EXPLANATION TO WHY OBAMA’S FILE NUMBER IS HIGHER THAN THOSE ISSUED AFTER HIS WAS SUPPOSEDLY ISSUED?
