At least she's not your state representative...

Rep. Sally Kern, Republican of Oklahoma City. Have you thought lately about how lucky you are that you don’t live in Oklahoma? Here’s another reason. http://blog.seattlepi.com/seat…

“We have a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school?

“I’ve taught school and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them.”

…She explained Saturday that “my words were obviously not spoken correctly and for that I humbly apologize.”  But the apology was qualified, as Kern added:

“Unfortunately, when we take words or sentences out of the total context of a speech debated on the floor, there can be false misrepresentations, but the most important part is always go to the heart of the manner.”

Today, reports the Tulsa World, fellow Republicans had managed to block a motion from Democrats to reprimand her, but an evidently much more remorseful Rep. Kern asked that it be adopted by unanimous consent. Instead they took a vote, and it passed 76-16.

After reading about Rep. Kern on the edge of tears apologizing for these clearly horrid statements, I was almost ready to forgive her. But then I read what she said in 2008 about gays:

Studies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades. So it’s the death knell of this country. I honestly think it’s the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam, which I think is a big threat… If you got cancer or something in your little toe, do you say, well, you know, I’m just going to forget about it because the rest of me is fine? It spreads. OK? And this stuff is deadly, and it’s spreading, and it will destroy our young people, it will destroy this nation.

Now I don’t feel so sorry for her, and I don’t think she’s sorry for either one.
