It’s a big week in Washington, D.C. as the U.S. House works to pass one of the most important pieces of legislation in a generation. House leaders are hoping to move President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion Build Back Better plan to the Senate as soon as this Friday.
This is the real deal for Americans. The Build Back Better plan will make healthcare, eldercare, childcare, and housing more affordable, expand Medicare to cover dental, vision, and hearing services, provide universal pre-K for three- and four-year-olds and free community college, create a comprehensive nationwide paid family and medical leave policy, help create a clean energy economy, and extend Sen. Michael Bennet’s Child Tax Credit which has the potential to cut child poverty in half.
Meanwhile, a massive lobbying effort is underway by special interests who want to whittle down or kill this historic legislation completely. Some oppose pieces of the $3.5 trillion package, others say they don’t like how President Biden proposes to pay for it–by asking the wealthiest Americans and big corporations pay their fair share, and by giving Medicare the power to save taxpayers money by directly negotiating a better deal from providers.
Your U.S. Representatives need to hear from you this week. Our friends at Americans for Tax Fairness are organizing a nationwide day of action to flood Congress with phone calls and emails to make sure they know we’re paying attention. ATF’s toll-free number is 1-888-516-5820, or click here to be connected to your representative via a call-back. The message is simple:
Congress must support $3.5 trillion in investments in healthcare, eldercare, childcare, education, housing, child tax credits, clean energy and more, funded by making big corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes. It’s time for our tax code to reward work, not wealth.
Thanks for your timely action to support the Build Back Better Plan. Here are a few more ways to make a difference for the week of September 20, 2021:
