Family Research Council: Pray For Occupy Wall Street To "Backfire"

  • by: Colorado Pols

Pretty remarkable stuff–from yesterday’s Family Research Council “Prayer Team” alert, via Scot Kersgaard of the Colorado Independent and Right Wing Watch:

Days of Rage, Wall Street Occupation — The odd collection of left wing activists, street people, Hollywood celebrities and progressive publicity seekers camping out on Wall Street continues to grow, reportedly expanding to 250 cities across America and still more around the world. The group has adopted President Obama’s job’s mantra, blaming the upper 5% of Americans — “millionaires and billionaires” for not doing their fair share to help them get jobs. Experts say the group should be protesting at the White House. The Wall Street Journal suggests “they might start by considering what happens to an economy when the White House decides to make pinatas out of the financial-services industry (roughly 6%…of U.S. GDP), the energy industry (about 7.5% of GDP…)…and …various other alleged malefactors of wealth.”

May God quell the anger of this sad collage of people, stirred up by radical ideologues, encouraged by the press and even misguided officials, and cause it to fizzle. May it backfire as some experts predict, and may God send believers to bring Good News to these people and lead many to faith and peace in Christ! (Ps 2:1 ff; 76:1-12; Pr 29:8-16; Hos 4:6; Mt 5:21-22; Mk 6:34; Jn 10:10-16; Jas 1:20) [Pols emphasis]

Kersgaard notes that an awful lot of Christians and other people of faith seem to be supporting, and even participating in the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City and elsewhere–citing this NY1 report just as one example:

Chanting as they marched around the perimeter of Zuccotti Park, an interfaith coalition of Muslims, Jews and Christians carried a golden reproduction of the “Wall Street” bull, symbolizing greed and the biblical “golden calf” that was idolized as a false god.

So as you can see, there are religious arguments on both sides. But this mobilization from the Family Research Council to their army of “prayer warriors” to make the Occupy Wall Street protests “fizzle” and “backfire,” particularly the nervous lead-in to induce said “prayer warrior” army to beseech the Almighty God on behalf of the GDP contribution by the financial services industry, struck us as perhaps a bit sacrilegious.

Though not really a new thing, historically speaking we guess.

    1. Matthew 19:21-24

21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

23 And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

24 “Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

      1. 25  Unless and until you find a way to make wealth by speculating on or with publicly guaranteed debt.

26 Or your minister claims the kingdom of God can be yours here on earth if only you realize that God the Father wants you to prosper and have much

27 Until then, no dirty hippies allowed. Or respected.

28 And gay people are to be judged harshly and chastised.

29 And those who disagree with you.

30 Especially  those who disagree with you.

      2. Clearly this parable is about how hard it is for a rich man to keep his hard-earned money when he’s choked by regulation and taxation. That’s what the eye of the needle represents. Telling him to sell his possessions and give to the poor is testing him to see if he’s a dirty hippie, because only a dirty hippie would do that.

  1. Don’t all religions pretty much agree that prayer is an act of supplication, in other words, a humble entreaty to a greater being–the opposite of a warlike act?

Maybe I’m just talking to the wrong God/ess/es, but seems to me that an omnipotent, omniscient being would respond poorly to people describing talking to Him/Her/It/They as an act of war.

  2. Anyone recall the prayers for rain during the 2008 Democratic convention held under the crystal clear skies at Invesco?

Followed closely by the hurricane in Texas that almost caused the cancellation of the GOP convention?

Careful what you pray for… FRC’s prayers could make the Occupy Movement even stronger!

    1. Gov Perry praying for rain in Texas, still experiencing one of the worst droughts of the modern (liquid fuels) era.

DisneyWorld getting destroyed for having Domestic Partner Day or something.

and on and on and on.

    2. It’s the gays.  As much as God loves Republicans and ought to be expected to answer all their prayers, the GOP being His a party of chosen ones and all, He’s just too ticked off about the gays. It’s a protest prayer answering stoppage.

  3. I hope they have the same success they’ve had with prayin’ away the gay, prayin’ away the Texas drought, prayin’ away the commie socialist Democrats, etc. Seems to be working out well for them so far. Keep on prayin’ folks.
