New Poll: Gov. Polis, Colorado Progressives Weather Historic COVID-19 Crisis

DENVER: The latest edition of the Rocky Mountaineer, an exclusive polling partnership between Global Strategy Group and ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, reveals that Gov. Jared Polis and the Democratic majority in the Colorado General Assembly have weathered the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic while retaining strong majority support from Colorado voters. Key highlights include:

  • • Coloradans overwhelmingly consider themselves “pro-mask” and “provaccine” and support efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 like masks and vaccine requirements. It’s no surprise, then, that they view anti-vaxxers extremely negatively.
  • • Voters give Governor Polis high marks and rate Democrats much more strongly than Republicans on their handling of the pandemic, saying Democrats got the response about right while the GOP didn’t take it seriously enough.
  • • Voters agree Biden won in 2020 and so view both right-wing militias and conspiracy theorists who insist otherwise intensely negatively. Messaging that highlights the GOP’s embrace of these two groups, along with the Texas abortion ban and anti-vaxxers, raise significant doubts for voters, moves the generic legislative ballot in the Democrats’ favor, and leaves Colorado voters calling Republicans “crazy.”

Read the full report in the latest edition of the Rocky Mountaineer.

“Despite the dishonesty and scheming of the right-wing echo chamber to undermine public health, Governor Polis retains the support of a solid majority of Coloradans,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Sara Loflin. “Governor Polis, along with progressive Colorado legislators have consistently put the lives and livelihoods of Coloradans first through one of the most difficult times in our history. Meanwhile, Republicans have spent the last year working to appease and align with divisive lies and violent extremism of Donald Trump.”

“Perhaps most importantly, these results show that while Colorado Republicans are busy trying to institutionalize the Big Lie, it has failed to take hold in Colorado,” said Loflin. “Colorado voters have an overwhelmingly unfavorable view of conspiracy theorists still pushing the falsehood that Joe Biden lost the 2020 election. Coloradans reject fringe ‘anti-vaxxers,’ and condemn armed militias as a grave threat to American democracy. Coloradans want nothing to do with the Colorado Republican Party’s flirtation with violent extremism to support Trump or fight against public health best practices.”

“Colorado voters understand the hardships we’ve been through together and support the tough choices our elected leaders made to save lives during the pandemic,” said Loflin. “What we see in these numbers is that Colorado voters are smarter than the pundits and cynics think.”
