Irene Griego Appointed CU Regent in CD-7

Governor John Hickenlooper has appointed Irene Griego to the University of Colorado Board of Regents in CD-7. Griego replaces Monisha Merchant, who resigned last month to take a job in the office of Sen. Michael Bennet.

Gov. Hickenlooper appoints University of Colorado Regent

DENVER ­- Friday, Nov. 19, 2011 – Gov. John Hickenlooper today appointed Irene C. Griego to fill the vacancy on the University of Colorado Board of Regents created by the resignation of Monisha Merchant.

Griego is the Director for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Interim Community Superintendent for Jeffco Public Schools. She has 38 years of experience as a teacher, school principal, community superintendent and university instructor.

Griego worked as a community superintendent in Jeffco Public School from 2000 to 2010. She was responsible for general administration and supervision of schools, instructional and administrative staff in 37 K-12 schools in Arvada, Golden, Jefferson and Wheat Ridge. She earlier worked as part-time faculty at the University of Colorado Denver (1997-2000) and as the program coordinator and part-time faculty for Teachers for Colorado Program, Metropolitan State College of Denver (1993-1995).

Griego served as a principal at Stein Elementary (1990-2000) and Zerger Elementary School (1989) in Jeffco Public Schools and at McCollam Elementary School, San Jose, Calif. (1989-1990). She was assistant principal in Denver Public Schools’ Sabin Elementary School (1987-1989) and at Goldrick Elementary School (1986-1987). Griego was a classroom teacher in Denver Public Schools (1975-1986).

Griego earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a doctorate from the University of Colorado Denver.

The state Constitution gives the governor authority to fill vacancies on the Board of Regents. Griego will hold office until the next general election (2012) and until a successor is elected.
