UPDATE: Newsweek reports that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy himself arranged for Rep. Lauren Boebert to call Rep. Ilhan Omar today to follow up on Friday’s social media sort-of apology:

“I talked to Congresswoman Lauren Boebert today,” McCarthy said in a statement released Saturday. “She has apologized for what she said and has reached out to Congresswoman Omar to meet next week.”

“I spoke with [Democratic House Majority Leader Steny] Hoyer today to facilitate that meeting so that Congress can get back to talking to each other and working on the challenges facing the American people,” McCarthy added.

Now that Boebert has yanked any pretense of being sorry, Kevin McCarthy needs a new statement.

Last week we noted that Colorado Congressperson Lauren “Q*Bert” Boebert (R-ifle) was trying to dig herself out of a deep hole after likening fellow Congressperson Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) to a suicide bomber. Boebert issued a rare sort-of apology for her remarks after getting criticized by Democrats and Republicans alike, saying that she had reached out to Omar to discuss the matter personally.

Boebert apparently had that phone call with Omar, and it did not go as well as she had hoped. Boebert quickly followed up with a video on social media blasting Omar for not sufficiently accepting her half-assed apology and REITERATING her belief that Omar is a terrorist. Here’s today’s video in its entirety:

As you can see, Boebert is unfamiliar with the first rule of holes: Stop digging.

Here’s the full transcript of her awful comments following her call with Omar:

Hi everyone. This is Lauren with a quick update on a phone call I had today with Squad member Ilhan Omar. I had reached out to her Friday, and three days later I was able to connect with her on the phone because I wanted to let her know directly that I had reflected on my previous remarks.

Now, as a strong Christian woman who values faith deeply, I never want anything I say to offend someone’s religion. So I told her that. Even after I put out a public statement to that effect. She said that she still wanted a public apology because what I had done wasn’t good enough. So I reiterated to her what I had just said. She kept asking for a public apology, so I told Ilhan Omar that she should make a public apology to the American people for her anti-American, anti-Semitic, and anti-police rhetoric. She continued to press, and I continued to press back. And then, Representative Omar hung up on me. [Pols emphasis]

Rejecting an apology and hanging up on someone is part of cancel culture 101 of the Democrat party. Make no mistake. I will continue to fearlessly put America first, never sympathizing with terrorists. Unfortunately, Ilhan [Rep. Ilhan Omar] can’t say the same thing, and our country is worse off for it. Please know that I appreciate you and your support. I appreciate you understanding that I will always shoot straight with you. This isn’t about religion. It’s about the horrible, failed Democrat policies and anti-Americanism that I will call out each and every time I hear it. I am here to protect your freedom and continue making this the greatest nation our world has ever seen. God Bless you and God Bless America.

Multiple Republicans have called on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to condemn Boebert for her original remarks (McCarthy has thus far remained silent), and this was before Boebert’s most recent comments today in which she basically doubled-down on calling a colleague a terrorist.

We’re not sure what Boebert is trying to accomplish here, other than to make sure that everyone understands the depth of her own racism. So much for “unnecessary distractions,” eh?

  2. Lauren Boebert…… The gift that keeps on giving!

    McCarthy is powerless to criticize these nut jobs. He's already been told that some of them will not support him for speaker. If the GOP takes the House by a big wave (50+ seats change hands), he won't need to worry. The job will be his w/ or w/out the screwballs.

    But if the Dems manage to keep it close next year (the 221 Democrats to 213 Republicans now miraculously becomes 221 Republicans to 213 Democrats in 2023), McCarthy will have problems and we're probably looking at Speaker Gym Jordan.

      2. Wyoming goes Democrat!

        Liz Cheney will be thrown out of the Republican Party, so she then runs as an independent. This splits the Republican vote allowing an opening for the Democrat to win.

        This could be replicated for the Senate race in 2024.

        2. Stranger things have been known to happen.

          In New York US Senate race in 1970, Dems nominated a liberal (big surprise there), Republicans nominated a liberal (they use to do that back then), and the Conservative Party ran James Buckley, brother of William F.

          Guess who won?

          You're right, PH. It could happen in Wyoming.

          1. I'm betting that WV Republicans run to the left of Joe Manchin when he's up for election. They will claim (truthfully) that he voted against family leave and the $300/month tax break for kids.

            Not that the winning Republican will actually vote FOR those things. Winning is the only thing that matters => power.

            Obviously, if the Senate is re-taken by Republicans, they will eliminate the filibuster. Again, power is the God.

    2. I've always liked the idea of rouge staffers — one of my favorite written malaprops. Right up there with one I've made a couple of times as I was typing quickly, which would have described them as viscous staffers.

      Neither side of this exchange will emerge with a transformed, positive relationship.  Neither will gain support from the partisan backers of the other. 

      I much prefer Rep. Omar's 2019 apology after she implied lawmakers' support for Israel is driven by campaign donations from pro-Israel groups.

      "My intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole," Omar said in a statement Monday afternoon. "We have to always be willing to step back and think through criticism, just as I expect people to hear me when others attack me for my identity. This is why I unequivocally apologize."

    (So much for those carefully crafted written statements by rogue, competent staffers, and all the electrons they were written with.)

    Opinion: Lauren Boebert is what George W. Bush called the ‘worst of humankind’

    I’m old enough to remember when Republican leaders still had souls.

    Twenty years ago, I was on the White House beat for The Post when President George W. Bush, six days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, set aside his war planning efforts long enough to visit the mosque at the Islamic Center of Washington to admonish Americans not to take out their anger on innocent Muslims.

    …

    [Bush said] “Those who feel like they can intimidate our fellow citizens to take out their anger,” he said at the Washington mosque that day in 2001, “represent the worst of humankind, and they should be ashamed of that kind of behavior.” America “is a great country,” he said, “because we share the same values of respect and dignity and human worth.”

    Twenty years later, Boebert, Gosar, Greene and too many of their colleagues have abandoned those shared values. And Republican leaders, divesting themselves of shame, now tolerate the worst of humankind.
