Politicizing Fire Relief With Colorado's Biggest Hypocrite

  • by: Colorado Pols
Jeff Hunt of the Centennial Institute.

In the aftermath of the devastating wildfires that struck southeastern Boulder County on December 30th, destroying nearly 1,000 homes and instantly becoming the most financially destructive wildfire in Colorado history, there’s been a huge wave of generous donations by fellow Coloradans and donors across the nation to the Boulder County Wildfire Fund set up by the Boulder County Community Foundation. One donation page organized by local NBC affiliate 9NEWS has raised over $1.3 million from over 12,000 individual donors. Boulder County’s Office of Emergency Management currently links to a donation page for the Boulder County Wildfire Fund for visitors seeking information on where to donate.

In an email blast this weekend, GOP gubernatorial candidate Heidi Ganahl invited her supporters to donate to the Boulder County Community Foundation as well:

Unfortunately, the nonpartisan goodwill toward fire victims in Boulder County is under challenge from a leading conservative political activist, Jeff Hunt of the Centennial Institute, who is alarmed to discover that a community nonprofit in the liberal community of Boulder has ties to–gasp–liberals!

To establish the vital context here, the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University is one of the most notorious thinly-veiled political “dark money” groups in the state operating under a fully charitable 501(c)(3) tax status. In addition, the Centennial Institute’s parent organization Colorado Christian University enjoys a special exemption carved out in state law allowing this religious university to receive public education funds through the College Opportunity Fund stipend program.

Meaning this is the epitome of throwing stones from a glass house.

Just as it would be wrong to suggest that all of Colorado Christian University’s charitable donations go to fund Jeff Hunt’s avowedly pro-GOP political agenda, the allegation that Boulder Community Foundation would use donations to the Boulder County Wildfire Fund for any purpose other than relief for the wildfires is outrageous without any supporting evidence. And it’s not just CCU: think of the faith-based assistance programs that exist on the premise that they are providing a public good without proselytizing. By Jeff Hunt’s logic, how can we trust any of them?

The best response we can think of? Answer this hypocrite by keeping those donations coming.

  1. Hmmm, seems exactly like what Christ would tweet during times of immense human suffering. "The generous will themselves be blessed, except for those who support the blasphemous Bell Policy Center…"

    1. Awfully nice, however, of Jeff not pointing out that those fires were obviously god’s judgement on Boulder County for supporting higher minimum wages, or voting rights, or something? . . .

    1. "religion is the gift….." Especially since it now appears; not yet confirmed; that the fire may have started on property owned by a fundamentalist Christian sect.

          1. It is hard to keep track, Genghis.

. . . Fortunately we have CHB here to always keep us posted on the daily scorecard and pronouncements as to just who is really real, and who’s not really real but just posers co-opting and trading on monikers.

                1. Great choice! The music of my adolescence…

I'm always flattered when your name and mine are used in the same sentence.

Can I call you, "bro"? 🤣 No wait…nevermind! Just kidding…I'll call you Dio.😎

                  1. I have long suspected, ever since my very early childhood, that there had been foul play, or at the very least some kind of colossal Kafkaesque administrative screw-up, that I wound up incarcerated in rural western Nebraska with a family filled to the rafters with devout German-Russian Lutheran and Baptist ministers, missionaries, deacons, and Sunday school teachers, and not a family of honky-tonk and blues musicians??! . . .

                    . . . at long last — Howdy, bro!

                    Oh, and thank you, CHB!!!

  2. Oops, again, Alva:

“Jeff Hunt’s avowedly pro-GOP political agenda, the allegation that Boulder Community Foundation would use donations to the Boulder County Wildfire Fund for any purpose other than relief for the wildfires is outrageous with (?) any supporting evidence.”

    1. Ok, Ok, yeah, yeah, yeah . . .

You’re right, he may not have actually won that title yet, . . .

. . . but he’s certainly a big enough hypocrite to appear on their show as a favored contestant.

  3. He’s got a good gig making $$$ to tweet bible verses and saddle up his high horses Marijuana and Abortion. Oh, and also inviting the likes of the duck call guy and Pizza Gate Posobiec to speak at his Christian college.
