Republican candidate Jon Huntsman will drop out of the presidential race on Monday and endorse front-runner Mitt Romney, a senior official with the former Utah governor’s campaign told CNN…
“Governor Huntsman did not want to stand in the way of the candidate best prepared to beat Barack Obama and turn our economy around. That’s Mitt Romney,” the official said.
Adds Fox News, lucid enough:
In light of his work in the Obama administration, Republicans seemed wary of Huntsman. While he cast his appointment in August 2009 as U.S. ambassador to China as answering the call to serve his country, his critics grumbled that he had in fact been working on behalf of the opposition.
Huntsman was conservative in matters of taxes and the reach of the federal government, but he was out of step with most conservatives in his support of civil unions for gay couples. On matters of science, he poked fun at his skeptical rivals in a pre-debate tweet: “To be clear. I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy.”
In the end, Huntsman didn’t seem to register, crazy or otherwise, with Republicans looking for an alternative to Romney or a winner against Obama…

He was evidently an excellent governor of Utah and an excellent ambassador. But his campaign tract doesn’t reflect sound planning or strategy.
Don’t you think he was auditioning for a cabinet post?
Not sure who was behind pushing him into the limelight … his dad or LDS poobahs? Someone gave him enough of a pep talk to have him abdicate his ambassadorship. He doesn’t strike me as far down the egotistical & narcissistic rabbit hole as the likes of Newt or Perry so just not sure how he ever got into this mess. But if he did all this just in the frayed thread chances of a Mittens admin appt then Huntsman he’s too much an idiot to serve.
But perhaps Huntsman thought it was time to rally the sane wing of the GOP.
Obviously, he was a few years ahead of his time.
While I like most of us help for some more productive bi-partisanship in DC I was really always was blown away by him taking a job he wanted as Ambassador to China and then deciding to run against the guy who gave him the job. Loyalty is top on my list of how I judge people and he clearly failed on that one.
is a ticket to ride Ladies and Gentlemen!
Oh well–presumably Perry is next, then it will be who can trash each other, and Mittens more–Google Boy or the Professor? A few more weeks of fun anyhow, before we can recycle Newt’s fine work to attack Willard.
comes from the Beatles song. And here’s an interesting interpretation of what it means:
would make more sense coming from Newt or Romney giving out “ride” tokens to Wall St and K St.
Huntsman’s lack of knowledge here is about as bad as getting Nirvana’s song title wrong. Just a touch of the idiot trying to be hip when your jeans have an ironed crease.
may not be true, may have been John putting him on but it’s a common one that has been around forever.
when I was a young teenager at the time the song came out, the rumor I was hearing was that Ride (or maybe (Ryde which also figures in other explanations as a pun) was where girls went to get abortions and this was really about the guy’s heartbreak that his girlfriend preferred to do that rather than stay and marry him. That one must be way off because I did’t see it with the google. Of course rumors about everything Beatles abounded. If you’re old enough you’ll remember the whole Paul is dead thing.
In any case it certainly is a famous Beatles song and in it’s most literal construction refers to a heartbroken lover being deserted by his beloved with “a ticket to ride, and she don’t care. My baby don’t care” so, any way you look at it, you have to wonder why Huntsman picked this phrase.
Did he think a randomly selected pop reference would make him look cool? Even if he had picked one that he knew something about, since when does it help in a GOP primary to look cool? These are the people who have to raise their hands to affirm they still accept only 19th century science, never mind 20th, now in the 21st century.
and did find that abortion related rumor my teenybopper friends and I accepted as gospel at the time at a few different sites. Here’s one:

“23 skidoo”!
I’m not entirely covinced that any pop reference nearly 50 years after the fact qualifies one as being “hip.”
the mid 21 teens. I’m getting old fast enough!
Rudy Valentino was timeless; and for those who quality as hip, 47 pretty much counts as “nearly 50.”
Still, chicky, you’re more than just the cat’s meow!
