Romney Keeps Making a Liar of Romney

In a long-forgotten tape from the 2002 Massachusetts governor’s race obtained by ABC News, Mitt Romney is seen touting his Washington connections and his ability to get millions of taxpayer dollars from the federal government.

“I am big believer in getting money where the money is,” Romney says on the video, “The money is in Washington.”

The video, which was surreptitiously shot by Democratic opponents of Romney on Oct. 16, 2002, shows him addressing a group called the New Bedford Industrial Foundation. The Power Point presentation he uses lists ways to improve economic development in Massachusetts, including “boost federal involvement.”

“I want to go after every grant, every project, every department in Washington to assure that we are taking advantage of economic development opportunities,” Romney tells the group.

Very odd, as we thought this was the sort of thing Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum, those bad guy Washington insiders, would say. But their job was to approve these requests, so that’s worse? Perhaps Mitt Romney wishes the members of Congress he “went after” had said no?

The fact is, our biggest problem could be trying to make sense of this at all. The Friday before Super Tuesday may just not be the right time to ask.

  1. I often wonder why Colorado Pols only quotes certain parts of a story and not others:

    “Every state budget in the country is dependent on federal funding, and every governor in the country makes requests for funding, but governors do not get to decide how Congress appropriates money,” said Romney spokesman Andrea Saul. “Governor Romney supports a permanent ban on earmarks, which are symbols of what’s wrong with Washington.”

    That’s why – you’d have no story!

    1. It’s a familiar refrain from R-money: Pay no attention to what I’ve said or done in the past. Only listen to what I say now.

      When he was MA guv, he used his connections to get earmarks.

      When he ran the Olympics, he used his connections to get earmarks.

      Now he’s running for President and now he’s against earmarks.

      That guy will say anything to get elected.

    2. If only Mitt Romney weren’t the most brazen flip-flopper in the history of presidential politics.

      Are you getting hazard pay for your attempts at spin control, Arap? You’re at serious risk of whiplash, and it’s only March!

    WASHINGTON – Presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Wednesday he opposed Senate Republicans’ effort that critics say would limit insurance coverage of birth control, then reversed himself quickly in a second interview saying he misunderstood the question.

    Romney told Ohio News Network during an interview that he opposed a measure by Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., that was scheduled for a vote Thursday. “I’m not for the bill,” Romney said before urging the interviewer to move on.

    Romney later said he didn’t understand the question.

    “Of course I support the Blunt amendment. I thought he was talking about some state law that prevented people from getting contraception so I was simply – misunderstood the question and of course I support the Blunt amendment,” Romney later told Howie Carr’s radio program in Boston, noting that Blunt is his campaign’s point man in the Senate.

    1. you would sell off all the assets of your state and privatize all levels of state government to achieve a conservative utopia the old fashioned way.

      Taking earmarks of any kind at any level is a sure sign of the devil’s work.

      1. Cuz that’s what they really are.

        You’re right. I thought the GOP still believed that states should wield more power than the federal government. I forgot that every level of government is bad.
