Speaking on CNN Wednesday morning, [Romney communications advisor Eric] Fehrnstrom was asked if the campaign worried that Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich “might force the governor to tack so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election.”
To which Mr. Ferhnstrom responded: “Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It’s almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and restart all of over again.” [Pols emphasis]
Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley quickly denounced the comment. “We all knew Mitt Romney didn’t have any core convictions, but we appreciate his staff going on national television to affirm that point for anyone who had any doubts,” he said in a statement.
Help us out, folks–could he have said something more damaging about Mitt Romney, the candidate whose biggest obstacle to victory is, well, trust? The candidate who is regularly accused of “resetting” himself–kind of like you did with your Etch-a-Sketch as a kid? If he tried with all his might, could this spokesman have said something more perfectly injurious?
Anyway, we assume the guy is fired. And possibly worked for Barack Obama the whole time.

Newt even donated one to a toddler, calling her a presidential candidate.
Santorum is hitting the better mark, imo. Terrible analogy to walk into if you’re mitten like in your floppiness.

I must say, I loved Etch a Sketch when I was a kid. Wish I’d been the little girl that got “re-gifted” from Newt.
You can spice him up and make him resemble anything you want him to be.
As I said, this isn’t the era of etch-a-sketch. They can’t shake away anything Romney has said for the base pander. Newt’s having a field day with this now and when he’s gone it will be the Dems’ turn. I think Romney’s campaign aid has just created the nickname by which Mittens be known from now on.
You used to be able to tell, different groups different messages. But nowadays what is said to one group is put in front of everyone else. Generally as a video which has a lot stronger impression.
>I think Romney’s campaign aid has just created the nickname by which Mittens be known from now on.
Mitt-ch-a-sketch?
Hes kicked 3 million Latino families back to Mexico, he’s spent trillions with no appreciable job creation to show for it, he passed Obamacare and we got to read it after he signed it, …
I could go on and on home prices continue to decline, gas is $5, milk and bread are up 50%, he wants more taxes from us and our paychecks are much less.
… isn’t true.
Then why 2 years ago did CNN have to stop its 247 promotion of Obamas stimulus spending … Why?, well all the BS they were promoting turned out to be false or half true.
They couldnt honestly continue their program because it actually exposed the total failure that the 1T$ stimulus program really was.
Like many Americans I have ODS, he’s not what he sold us as a nation.
Every single thing you just said isn’t true.
Drop us a link…
The fact is that Repugs can talk about how Latinos are ticked off at Obama all they want. Doesn’t change the fact that they still mainly vote Dem and don’t see R pols as their buddies.
Just like they can talk about how Obama is such an enemy of Israel all they want and a good 85% of self identified American Jews still vote Dem. Most aren’t terribly comfortable with pols who insist that being a devout Christian is an American requirement for high office.
They can also put all the women they want on the talk shows to prove Repugs aren’t assaulting women’s rights. The latest tack for those GOP women, when asked about that, is to claim it’s Dems who are trying to use these issues to distract from the economy but we can all see it’s GOP majority legislatures relentlessly pushing ever more draconian, intrusive legislation to control women all over the country. Women are polling more likely to support Dems than ever.
He doesn’t have any links to anything fact based and we don’t need no stinking links. Reality speaks for itself.
Shake it as needed between the primary and the general. Then again after the election. Then after the inauguration. Shake it before summits. Etc.
Miss you when you’re not here. 🙂
The most damaging thing isn’t that Romney’s top aide acknowledges they can just change everything in the general. It is that it was his answer to a question about whether he had been pulled too far right. The answer confirms that Romney thinks he has been pulled too far right and will tack back significantly — exactly what all the Gingrich and Santorum voters are concerned about.
You know, we’ve heard that a lot during this campaign. But what America wants, what America needs, is a talented, experienced business leader. We all know that. President Obama ran a historic campaign in 2008, and he’s a great candidate. But he’s not a great president. Governor Romney did ..X and Y and Z in Massachussets. He’s on record, consistently saying …blah…blah…blah
More to your point CNN the real problem is for Senator Santorum and Speaker Gingrich who have some extreme right positions so they cannot carry the necessary middle in the Fall. They don’t have the experience we need in the White House now. Neither ended their last campaigns carrying enough voters in their home state to carry that state… etc and etc
Instead, what he said was yeah= you caught us. We’re going to be spinning and flipping so hard come the day after the convention, the Governor may have to change his name.
Poor Eric – he may be looking for a career change.
And I don’t think it’s how Romney feels at all. He did do his boss a disservice, and I agree he should probably resign.
If Eric resigns or gets fired, it gives the story legs.
If he was going to be fired, it should have been immediately. Too late now.
The reason it’s going to stick is that it fits perfectly with the general perception, a perception based on verifiable, documented reality. He did run far to the left of where he is now when he was going for Governor of a blue state. He did both create the model for Obama’s health care reform plan and write a big old editorial in the NYT encouraging the federal government to take it in the direction that the Obama plan takes it. It’s there for all to read and quote.
Has he since had a “revelation” about health care like the one he says he had about choice? Either the Etch-A-Sketch label is accurate or the guy has more revelations than your average biblical prophet. But Dems can let Newt and Frothy take the lead on all that … for now.
Sweet dreams, Arap
We’ll make ‘im a moderate yet.
Identifying and illustrating Etchy’s many, many lies, one after another (and saying outright and truthfully what a liar he is), she pointed out that it’s not just a lie or two — we’re used to that with politicians in the heat of a campaign — it’s the ease with which he lies. He lies often and about everything, even the stupid things.
Even the Repugs won’t be able to ignore this. Oh, wait, they’re Repugs. They can ignore the truth as easily as they lie.
and they’re Republicans, bless them. Their devastating comments are sure to appear later in the general in lord knows how many Dem ads. Mittens will be Mr. Etch-a-sketch for the rest of his life. This is going to stick like glue because it speaks to what everyone, Rs, Ds indies, has instinctively felt about the guy all along. Sweet dreams to ArapG.
We think you’re stupid.
-The Romney campaign.
Besides, I like Tabula Rasa or palimpsest better.
We know you’re stupid.
The Romney campaign
The Perry campaign
The Gingrich campaign
The Santorum campaign
The Bachmann campaign
The Paul campaign
The Tancredo campaign
The Palin campaign
The Guliani campaign
The Bush campaign
The McCain campaign
. . .
We gotta appeal to something, and what you got the mostest is ignorance. You get what you deserve.
Trash-talks for Mitt in good times…
… But disappears when Mitt loses a big primary or suffers a gaffe
This doesn’t matter. Romney didn’t say it.
But if we’re going to start holding candidates accountable for the words of their associates, then everything Rev. Wright and Van Jones have ever said is now fair game, right?
Sure, hypocrites, I’ll play your game. Just keep the rules the same.
speaking on behalf of the Obama campaign in an official capacity on national TV, let me know, ya freaking dumb bunny.
Those guys weren’t campaign spokesmen, dummy.
If this is a game, you lost on the opening pitch.
A. You aren’t very good at it.
B. You aren’t stupid.
So stop acting like you are.
This wasn’t an “associate.” This wasn’t Romney’s minister. This is a paid employee of the Romney campaign. A high ranking paid employee–who else is designated to speak with the press than the paid communications adviser? The best thing you could hang your hat on is that his words were taken out of context. Go with that. Because that’s all you’ve got here.
The rest of us will just go with what we’ve known about Romney since he accepted donations back in the day from Planned Parenthood–he’s a back pedaling, two faced liar that will do anything to reinvent himself in order to win the nomination.
Spin all you want. The bad news for your team is that voters are paying attention.
about B
I’d be willing to argue A . . .
That to get elected, Romney changes positions — fundamental ones, and he changes them wholesale. Hence the Massachussets pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro-tax hike, pro-health insurance mandate, liberal R governor who voted in a Dem primary race… now calls himself a “severely conservative” governor.
Ohio Art Co. (maker of the Etch-a-Sketch) stock tripled in value since Wednesday’s comment.

That stock speculators care where Etch-a-Sketches are made?

So nice of Willard to help his opponents in this way. Its almost like he’s just having so much fun he wants it to drag on and on! And so thoughtful–such a cheap prop he bestowed his competitors with! Rick probably has 6-7 sitting at home already; and Newt–with all that cash he’s grafting from his campaign? Hell, he could probably corner the E-a-S market if he moved quickly. At least the fun will go on through the weekend. What will Romney’s next flub be? Any wagers?
