Can't Make This Up: The "America First Candidate Carnival"

Thursday evening at the Oasis Christian Church in Pueblo West, a family-friendly event for Pee-ebla “patriots”–don’t accuse us of besmirching the word, it’s organized by the Pueblo County Patriots–who want their face patriotically painted and don’t want to hear from any softie gone-Denver Republicans in Name Only:

We don’t know what Brian Cotter, who is apparently the Pueblo Patriots’ favored candidate for Pueblo County Coroner, did to get himself on the top tier of candidates along with Tina Peters and Ron Hanks, but the possibilities are creeping us out. Also curious is Stephen Varela, running for Leroy Garcia’s old Senate seat, sharing top billing with Hanks and Peters. SD-3 is on the list of Senate seats Republicans would like to pick up in November, and Varela has been pitched by Republicans as a curveball in this politically volatile district.

Apparently he is, just not the way anyone was thinking.

For the headlining carnival barkers (sorry, it’s just too easy) Hanks and Peters, it’s another opportunity for them to present themselves as the natural favorites of the Republican base with no opposition from their primary opponents. Both of these candidates have made up for other deficiencies–Hanks’ financial and Peters’ criminal–by aggressively campaigning in person at every possible event where Republican primary voters are likely to congregate. Peters has the added advantage of having substantially outraised her primary opponent, while Hanks has zeroed in on his opponent’s weakness on banning abortion to wedge his low-budget campaign into contention. With ballots going out in just days, Hanks and Peters have all the momentum.

It’ll all be on display Thursday at the (we’re still chuckling) “America First Candidate Carvinal.”

  1. Remember: when something goes wrong in the circus they send in the clowns to distract the audience.  Something has gone very wrong with the circus and the clowns are everywhere. 

  3. I'll be voting my Republican ballot for Hanks and Peters. Get the two crazies on the general election ballot and hope you Dems have your act together; meaning not being complacent in a tough year; for November.

        We need to destroy the Republican Party in order to save it.

      2. Moderatus, I'm a firm believer in Country over Party.

        Besides, Tina Peters is a crook and Ron Hanks is stupid. It's not the b.s. like "crooked Hillary" in 2016. These people, sadly, are for real.

      3. Hey.  It's your embrace of Trump, BimBoebert, Empty G and Groomer Gaetz that got us where we are.

        To save America and create a true loyal opposition, the Repuke party needs to be burned to the ground.

    2. CHB, I appreciate your reasoning but after what happened in the presidential race in 2016, I don’t know if I subscribe to that school of thought any more.

      Since I’m an unaffiliated voting in the GOP primary, I’m probably going with O’Dea (who appears to be slightly less kooky compared to Loren Hanks) in the senate race, the Kennel Queen of Douglas County in the gubernatorial race, and Pam Anderson for Sec. of State’s nomination.

      You’re welcome, Moderatus.

      But come November, it’s Bennet, Polis, and Griswold.

      1. I don't think Bennet, Polis, or Griswold will need to worry a great deal.  Weiser seems likely to skate to another term, as well.  Their opponents appear to be dedicated to the ideas of the rightiest of the right wing, and have other difficulties, too. Here's hoping the Democrats will all devote a fair amount of their campaign "cash on hand," which currently is significantly ahead of their opponents, to developing a solid ground game to get out the Democratic voters of the state, improving the chance for a Democratic sweep of the executive offices and maintained majorities in both chambers of the legislature.

        I'm more concerned about Treasurer Dave Young,  I don't think as many people understand what the State's Treasurer does, and even those that do probably do not see the office as being strongly impacted by having a Democrat or Republican in the chair.  I think there could well be a sympathy vote to get a Republican presence among the state executives, and Lang Sias seems like someone designed to capitalize on that.  [If Sias starts taking fashion advice from Gov. Youngkin of Virginia, I'll be truly worried.]

  4. Who cares which republican will lose to Polis, Bennet, or Griswald in a landslide.
    Republicans don’t even want votes to be counted fairly, they think their voters votes are worth more and should count more than everyone else. Republicans are toast in Colorado. They can’t even beat right wing sell outs like Bennet. I see little hope for republicans even in a republican year. A good day.
