FOX 31’s Eli Stokols, reporting on a story you saw here first:
A few weeks after a video surfaced of Congressman Mike Coffman questioning President Barack Obama’s “American-ness”, his Democratic opponent is pushing another video of Coffman that was posted by the same person as the first.
The new video shows Coffman speaking at the Elbert County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner back in February and praising Congressman Joe Wilson, R-South Carolina, for famously interrupting Obama’s address to a joint session of Congress by yelling “You Lie!”
“…Coffman shows us again that he is more than eager to exploit offensive rhetoric behind closed doors to further his extreme agenda,” Miklosi said in a statement. “And it’s even more clear now that Mike Coffman has little respect for the office he holds or for the office of the Commander in Chief.
“Mike Coffman’s extreme rhetoric and extreme record have no place in Colorado. This kind of behavior is more fitting for right wing talk talk radio than for the halls of Congress. We all know we deserve better.”
We’re frankly surprised it took so long for Joe Miklosi’s campaign to raise the issue of Rep. Mike Coffman’s praise for hotheaded Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina–we weren’t the only ones poring over video posted by a Coffman-friendly Elbert County GOP source in the wake of his “not an American” insult, and we noted the Joe Wilson praise stuff nearly two weeks ago.
We assume they’re just ramping up, but we honestly think accusing Bill Ritter of “rolling out the welcome mat” for terrorists is worse than praising Joe Wilson. No doubt they’ll get to that.
And others that may be lurking…

I’ve been beating the anti-Coffman drum for years, but because CD6 has not been a competitive district until now, no one seemed to believe what a wackadoodle this guy is. Hiding behind his admittedly impressive military career allowed him to get away with a lot. No more. His Tea Party career needs to be stopped.
Another sign of a very weak campaign. You’ve got to be kidding me. How about voting to end Medicare as we know it? How about his remarks regarding immigration? The list is so long, it’s just ridiculous. This is one of the stupidest things I’ve seen in politics in my 42 years.
You know, Joe, for years Republicans and Democrats in Jefferson County tried this he’s too extreme bit without backing it up with the facts and using trash like this.
The fact is that until Democrats finally figured out that people believe the BS that Republicans feed you, and started fighting back on the issues where Republicans are oh so vulnerable in the suburbs, they kept losing. They’re winning now because they finally figured out that while the voters of Jefferson and Arapahoe Counties are swing voters, they aren’t stupid. You have to tell them why Mike Coffman is an extremist, and they have to start doing it and keep doing it. You need to have an extreme vote of the day for Coffman. These need to be featured in your advertising and nothing else. Did you learn nothing from Michael Bennet? People, especially suburban swing voters couldn’t give a rat’s ass about this king of nonsense. If you don’t get your presumptious, ridiculous, obsequious, obnoxiouselitism out of your campaign, you’ll get what every other Democratic candidate in this district since it was essentially created in 1972 got. Forty percent of the vote and the conviction that a Democrat can never win here. Except, you’ve got the best district for Democrats ever. This nonsense shows, once again that you have no feel or understanding of suburban voters. For God’s sake, talk to Betty Boyd, or Mike Feeley or on and on and on. All I can say at this point is that Joe, you are too stupid to run and win as a Democrat in this district. I’d be sure to move Coffman up to like a 5-1 favorite in your next update Pols. God, shades of Johanna Conti.
I think you’re being a little hard on him. He’s not been perfect, but he has cleared the field. As a loyal Democrat, i’ll save my criticism now for November.
that they should be calling out every single vote, not just the gaffes. The gaffes will crack the door open for Joe, but his record should swing it wide open. No one has put Coffman’s record out there much, possibly because no one has wanted to take the heat for picking on a military officer. Hank Eng and John Flerlage, two previous CD6 candidates whom I respect very much, did not have it in them to go on the attack. They are good, decent people who would have been great Congressman — statesmen. Joe Miklosi is similar in temperament — a stand-up guy with integrity from a humble background.
The difference, this time, is Joe has a competitive district and some national attention. The Miklosi campaign should be hiring the fiercest of bulldogs to go after Coffman for his legislative attacks on women, children, the elderly, the poor, students, and everyone else who suffers from his Tea Party philosophy. The campaign should recruit more women and minority members as staffers to reach out to those important demographic groups, particularly in Aurora — the groups who have lost so much under Tea Party cuts and Tea Party gridlock. Surrogates should jump in and cream Coffman for years of bad votes — there is so much to nail him on.
Please remember I personally do not work for Joe, by the way. I’m just a supporter who thinks the world of Joe. Wish I had more time to highlight Coffman’s horrible record, vote by vote, but I’ve got a life, too. To all who are reading this — have at it: http://votesmart.org/candidate…
that voters in November will care about, if they even remember.
The Joe Wilson story is an old one that many have heard before. It is the recounting of a tale of an event the nation witnessed on TV. The one thing that Coffman added was something the national media failed to cover back then.
Twice, in committee, Congressman Wilson tried to add enforcement language to The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, that would preclude illegal immigrants from using the healthcare program. But his efforts were rejected by a party line vote. So the statement that illegal immigrants can’t use the Obamacare system IS in the law, but the enforcement mechanism IS NOT.
While Rep. Wilson’s methods were ill-advised and crude, his statement was accurate. What the president stated — at that point in his speech — was false.
Mikosi’s campaign is built on sand. He can only get publicity by trying to point out Coffman’s gaffes. Frankly, he is too liberal for many Dems in the new 6th CD. They tend to be blue collar Dems, not like the liberal ones Miklosi was used to in southeast Denver.
There is a reason some prominent Dems have held fundraisers for Coffman. Aurora officials were not envisioning a Denver carpetbagger to be the first congressman in the city’s first congressional district. Adams County Dems are still fuming that Miklosi stiffed them at their county assembly.
The entry of Kathy Polhemus into the race will peel off some Democratic votes and those of enough women to ensure Miklosi loses.
The challenger’s campaign is short on funds, terrible with messaging, and has too many Washington “pros” trying to run it. The Titanic had more going for it on its maiden voyage.
There is a lot of noise about Coffman being a birther, but it is something he never said or believed. Ending Medicare for seniors simply isn’t true. The GOP plan keeps it just as it is for those over 55. Coffman’s military background is significant in a new district that has a lot of active military personnel and veterans. Miklosi offers a “patches for veterans” bill in the state legislature that is killed in committee and lampooned by the Denver Post.
Miklosi may very well be a nice guy, but he was the Dem’s fourth choice in this race… and it really is showing now.
