Rep. Diana DeGette Hammers Romney-Ryan on Women's Issues

  • by: Colorado Pols

Rep. Diana DeGette of Denver broke out the full proverbial can of whoop-ass yesterday at the Democratic National Convention, delivering one of the stronger thumpings of Republicans on women’s issues we’ve seen this election season–certainly from any Colorado politician. Excerpts follow, full transcript as prepared for delivery available here:

My sisters and I were encouraged to choose the direction of our lives. We became a congresswoman, a stay-at-home mom, a filmmaker, and a journalist. And Lino and I taught our children that they could rise to even greater heights. They could become surgeons, CEOs, supreme court justices, secretary of state, and even president of the United States. We didn’t teach our daughters that they were second-class citizens.

With proposal after proposal, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want to make women second-class citizens again. [Pols emphasis] We will not let that happen. As a fourth-generation Coloradoan, I believe that our western spirit is an inspiration for what makes America great. Westerners stand strong in our defense of individual rights and women’s equality.

In 2013, Colorado will celebrate its 120th anniversary of granting women the right to vote–the first state in the nation to do so. The accomplishments we’ve achieved did not come easily. Many opposed the advance of women into new roles and responsibilities–they even opposed our right to vote. But, working together, we have established our rightful place in our American republic…

Romney and Ryan support the so-called “personhood amendment” that would ban many forms of birth control, would ban all abortions (even in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother’s life), ban in-vitro fertilization, which helps families have children of their own, and would ban embryonic stem cell research, which holds the promise to cure so many diseases.

But, although these restrictions on women’s rights are all Republican ideas, even in their platform, my friends across the aisle now try to change the subject. “It’s the economy,” they cry. And they are right. When they break the guarantee of Medicare, it will hurt women and families right in the pocketbook. When they allow insurance companies to deny coverage based on the pre-existing condition of being a woman, it hits women and families right in the pocketbook. When they take away the guarantee of coverage for mammograms and cervical cancer screenings in the Affordable Care Act, it will hurt women and families right in the pocketbook. When they deny women access to birth control so we can plan when to have children, it hits women and families right in the pocketbook.

    1. But Diana DeGette’s honest words struck a cord with the average woman voter for sure. Governor Granholm, Sister Campbell from Nuns on the Bus, Gabby Gifford, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Crisanta Duran, and many other powerful women also added their voices. In addition to the speakers were delegates cheering, waving signs, nodding, and taking interviews. I was very, very proud of our Colorado speakers and delegates these past four days! In 2016, I hope to be there, too!

    1. does not also involve women?  Seems to me in most cases women would be either a recipient of the child support or the payor?  So your point is . . .

    2. He wants to go back to the days when men got to order “their” women around and if they left they were considered cheap sluts who didn’t deserve either their children or child support.

Had a bad relationship or two, Nock?

      1. Within the context of progressive influence it will make little difference whether the President is re-elected if Elizabeth Warren loses. If Warren loses it will be seen as a loss for progressivism itself. That should not be allowed to happen.

The discussions last night about a rigged system, a fair playing field, theft on wall street from those on main street, all GO TO THE HEART of whether we will continue to be a vibrant world leading economy and country and form a more perfect union.

        1. and it is obvious that he is headed for a win, he can use some political capital late in the campaign to bolster candidates like Warren with a “Send me some help” message.  If Obama goes to Massachusetts to campaign for Warren, she has a chance to ride his coat tails.

Brown is a smooth liar with a 5% lead.  It is going to be tough to change opinions at this point with some kind of surge by the Obama campaign.  This is a big chance for Obama to surge ahead of Romney in people’s perceptions.

      1. I’d rather have a mediocre presence that provides a strong voice, than a strong presence providing a mediocre voice.

DeGette is a leader where it counts – in Congress, as one of our state’s elected representatives.

  1. But Wyoming was the first state to grant women the right to vote.  Colorado was the second.  The fact checkers will be busy finding that as well as trying to figure out if Bin Laden really is better off now than he was 4 years ago.
