Romney's "Victims" Monologue: A Defining Moment

  • by: Colorado Pols

UPDATE: FOX 31’s Eli Stokols:

Colorado Democratic Party Chairman Rick Palacio and Sen. Mark Udall ripped Republican Mitt Romney for his controversial comments about Americans who don’t pay taxes, which surfaced in a video Monday.

“You judge a person’s character by what they say in private,” Udall said at a press conference in Sunken Gardens Park. “Mitt Romney has failed the character test.”

…The comments are a devastating blow to a campaign already losing ground in the polls and a candidate whose opponent had already been engaged in a messaging war to portray him as an out-of-touch millionaire.

“It’s hard to believe that somebody who wants to be president of all of the people of this country would write off half of them,” Palacio said Tuesday.

—–

Over the years of campaigning for high elected office, Republican Mitt Romney has taken some of his worst heat not necessarily for his opinions on one issue or another, but his readiness to completely reverse himself on just about any issue–which he has done repeatedly as his stint as governor of Massachusetts evolved into presidential aspirations.

More recently, though, somebody has seemingly convinced Romney to stop flip-flopping on the issues whenever he decided it was expedient. Something has convinced him of late that this was the wrong course. Perhaps it was the “Etch-a-Sketch” stuff. We don’t claim to know.

In any event, what we have today in the 2012 presidential race is a candidate who decided to stop flip-flopping at the exact moment his political career depended on him doing just that. Romney lurched hard to the right to win his difficult primary in an attempt to placate the most vocal of his critics in the Republican Party. And now, when everyone expected a move to the center–and Republicans honestly needed him to for the sake of their own image–Romney is inexplicably doubling down on the hard-right tropes that eked him the nomination.

FOX News reports today on Romney’s follow-up to the devastating release of video from a fundraiser of him writing off roughly half the country as “dependent on government,” who “believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it.”

He stands by all of it, even if it was “inelegantly stated.”

“Of course there’s a very different approach of the two different campaigns, as I point out I recognize that among those that pay no tax, approximately 47 percent of Americans, [Pols emphasis] I’m not likely to be highly successful with the message of lowering taxes.  That’s not as attractive to those who don’t pay income taxes as it is to those who do. And likewise those who are reliant on government are not as attracted to my message of slimming down the size of government. And so I then focus on those individuals who I believe are most likely to be able to be pulled into my camp.”

First of all, folks, this is unmitigated nonsense. Please don’t waste too much time arguing the merits of Romney’s meritless case–it’s just not factual. In the above comments, Romney doesn’t even consistently single out federal income tax payers, which is the only way to make the charge that 47% of Americans “pay no tax” credibly. If you simply count federal payroll tax payers, you add another 28% of the population, leaving only the elderly and incomes under $20,000 per year–and even those people pay sales, property, and all kinds of other taxes.

The persistent myth that a huge percentage of the American people “pay no taxes” is a common right-wing axiom, reinforced since the 2008 recession, when the number of people receiving some form of assistance obviously did increase. This belief forms the basis of the conservative “We Are The 53%” campaign and other efforts. It is, at its core, a belief meant to sow contempt for the remaining 47% who “don’t pay taxes,” reinforcing the Ayn Rand conservative worldview of producers of value vs. “moochers.” That is, people “who believe that they are victims.”

We’re not saying nobody believes what Romney apparently believes about a large percentage of the population. But when you start to look under the hood of what Romney is saying, from the factual problems to the ugly prejudices that allow those factual problems to be squelched in his and too many minds…he’s not speaking to a majority of Americans anymore. In fact, he’s telling millions of ordinary people, their grandmothers, their kids in college, their neighbor who’s trying to get back to work, that his job as President is “not to worry about those people.”

It’s going to take a few days to process, but Romney is laying bare something very important. A mistake that drives a whole movement. A fundamentally, intentionally divisive misconception that has fueled a great deal of the last three and a half years of misguided rage.

This conversation needed to start, even if Romney will sorely regret being the one to start it.

    1. W looked at the poor and told them that the way out of poverty was to embrace the Republican view of naked capitalism. Doing so would improve their lives. Then they could all sit down and have a beer at the club. It was delusional, but it made W likable.

Romney looks at the poor with disdain and contempt. He knows the game is rigged and they’re the patsies. He has nothing whatsoever in common with the poor. There’s no way he’d ever deign to sit down with any of them and enjoy a cold beer on a hot afternoon.

The video just strips away the charade of campaign Romney to show who he really is, and it ain’t pretty.

  1. Who are these free-loading old people that dare to think anyone has any obligation to their well-being?

They think that 60 years of hard work means they can just laze about in their golden years?  That’s dependency thinking–Democrats, European-style socialism.  Greece.

Yep.  Nothing but good news this one for Rmoney.  Speaking right to his base he is…and calling them names.

    1. Houston, we may have a problem.

      Good thing there’s no such data on how LDS’ers are on paying Federal Income Tax;

      or Tea Partiers;

      or American Constitution Party members.

  2. Guess who else is dependent on the government forGuss who else is dependent on the government fo housing, med, trainIng, food, benefits all tnat other 47%er stuff?  Our TROOPS!

Yeah, all those folks defending Mitt’s freedoms and making it safe for his kinda democracy and the exact people this flaming asshole ignores.  This prick is a real pissah ain’t he…

  3. Obama insists on fomenting class war among Americans. He’s the architect of division. Mitt Romney will bring America together!

Music soars. Flags wave. Mitt flashes that horrible empty smirk.

  4. But I am 71.  My household income consists of social security, IRAs, and a small pension.  When I applied for Social Security, there was an option to have federal income taxes taken out of the monthly benefit.  I opted for it.  We pay some federal taxes, but we are dependent on that income…all of which is secured one way or the other by the federal government. But, we paid into each and every one of those funds.  The government consistently borrowed from the SS fund for current expense..including the gd wars.  Where the hell is Gore and his “lock box.”  We sure as hell use it, now.

I have been on a payroll for 68 years and paid payroll taxes every damm time.  I stopped part-time work three years ago because my vision was not longer sufficient for the job. One medical emergency and/or long term care and we are in the 47% ….if we are not already included….I can’t be sure…since our income comes in large part from the feds.

Now my rage:  Who the f*&k does that SOB think he is?

How dare he suggest that people like me and mine won’t take personal responsibility for ourselves. Who the hell is it to lecture me?!

    1. comes from (or is consistent with) the oversimplified, naive, and adolescent fiction of Ayn Rand.  It is unbelievable that this has become the dominant philosophy of their party.

        1. You think you got it tough? . . . why, back in my day — and by that I mean my VERY FIRST day . . . if I wanted a bottle of milk after I finished my 10-hour shift in the coal mine, I had to milk my own damn cow!

      1. and that is another reason I quite the part-time job…the math went as well as the vision….

Okay, I worked from age 16 to age 68…..52 years. Well, hell, maybe I am a moocher….52 is not as impressive as 68….although it felt like 68…

Lets be clear, BX….I am Dwyer, not the other.

        1. I have been working 27 years, and I’m already tempted to say fuck it all and move to Nicaragua.

Of course the kids might have a problem with that…

      2. There was a war on back then — a G*d damn World War.  There was no lazing around, you had a job right outta the womb.  It was do or die – ya learned to leave all that teat sucking for those strudel eating Jerries.

Don’t you get all uppity with yer ciphering Barron!

    2. If you want to do something about dw look up your local OFA team and help with the canvassing and registration.  It feels so good to knock on a door and talk about this election.  It seems scary at first but then the rage kicks in and you think “I’m going to do everything I can to make sure this Narcissist never sleeps in the White House”.  Find some capacity to help get out the vote.

      1. Don’t patronize me…that is precisely what is wrong with OFA.  OFA’s way or the highway….

They are not the only game in town…..they just think they are.

Plus, you know I use a walker and have vision problems…..you presume that I don’t canvass because I found it “scary.”……you all presume that I am not involved.  You also assume that none of the “worker bees” are allowed to express an independent opinion….only the “approved comments” by the higher ups….may make a comment.

No wonder the one group that Obama is consistently losing is those of us over 65…..Why don’t you ask me why?  Coward.

          1. My understanding is that the over 65 group is strong for Romney.  I think it is important to note that there are strong “gray beards” who are democrats.  Now, I also think that the “over 65” is not monolithic.  There are younger “over 65s” and   older “over 65”

However, these are factors that I think explain the reason why Romney has the “over the 65 crowd.”

            1) Talk radio – the market demographic for talk radio is weighed in favor of the older generations.  Talk radio is a “cesspool” of misinformation and it plays to the prejudice of people who grew up in the age of segregation and who are susceptible to the idea that America has been taken away from the real Americans by the poor, the black, the foreign, the lazy.

            2) Older Americans are “survivors” who did not grow up in a time of food stamps and medicaid, and a time when taking anything from the government like “relief” was something to be ashamed of..

            3) Older Americans do not recognize that the GI Bill that built the middle class after WWII and medicare and social security that preserved the middle class are government subsidies…..rather they see these as   “earned” benefits.

            4) Older Americans see their “earned benefits” threatened by the lazy welfare recipient and those angry foreigners who are getting all that foreign aid.

            5) Older Americans are by and large social conservatives.  They may have children and grandchildren who are having babies out of wedlock or who are doping and drinking, etc…..and they are worried and scared.

            6) Older Americans are also vulnerable to crime and look to a strong government to “imprison” criminals, not coddle them.

            1. I’m only a few years younger than you and I don’t live in a metro area. There is NO talk radio where I live unless folks are getting it from satellite or computer. I’ve never heard more than a few minutes of Glen Beck, Rush, or Sean. Never heard Boyles. I’ll have to take your word that us old farts in the city listen to that crap. I am sure that if I ever moved to the city I would not simply because the few moments I have heard were so obviously filled with lies that I turned it off and went back to rock and roll

I don’t see us coddling criminals. Contrarily I think we tend to punish much more harshly while providing little if any means to reform and rehabilitate. I occasionally drive past Buena Vista Prison as I have for 20 years. 20 years ago, in the evening, it was not uncommon to see prisoners playing softball. I did not consider that coddling. For at least 10 years I have NEVER seen that or any other activity outside by prisoners except when they are rarely brought to a local ‘ville to do some work that our local govts can’t afford to pay for. I don’t see anything wrong with the work and I didn’t see anything wrong with the softball.

I do understand that most seniors are socially more conservative. However, that has always been true. They used to worry that Elvis’ hip was going to poison you and me. Now they fear gay marriage and those things you list. But, look at how President Obama has led his life. One wife, 2 daughters, dinner with family almost nightly. Seems fairly ordinary to any age group.

1 in 6 now are on food stamps. That is not because these folks are freeloaders, though I expect a few are. That is because the more socially conservative among us voted twice for Bush who gave us the wars that you and I curse and tax cuts for the rich.

How much do you think race has to do with seniors supporting Rmoney?

              1. I think race has a lot to do with it. Depending on coherts…when someone was born – old white folks are susceptible to dog whistles that play on how they were “carefully taught.” i.e.” Blacks are lazy, unreliable, violent, manipulative,  and can’t be trusted..” No hosts say that…they imply it….like 47% of America is composed of moochers….

Now, you answer my points with facts. I agree with your facts.  But, propaganda has nothing to do with facts.

It builds on prejudices and fears with untruths. That is why it is so dangerous.  Talk radio can reinforces prejudices. It can reinforces lies, very skillfully.  There is no counter.  So when boyles says that no one knows who Obama is or where is was born, nobody contradicts him.  So, he can build on that…right now one subtle suggestion is that Obama is somehow allied with the Muslim Brotherhood and is not loyal to the United States….

On talk radio, callers are invited to share their personal experiences and feelings. There are no non-conservative voices heard. Callers are treated very respectfully…as long as they agree with the host and the talking points. The dems, the progressives, have for the most part abandoned talk radio.  Big mistake, IMHO.

Radio was the social minimum in the 30s and the 40s.

So old folks are very comfortable with that….and tend to trust whatever they hear on the radio…..because back in those days, radio was trustworthy.

As for the other points you make.  You are absolutely right.  But prejudice  is not rational – it builds on emotion.

Food stamps is a fascinating issue….because it is the one government “benefit” that is guaranteed to put money right back into the economy, immediately.  Who benefits the most from food stamps?   Farmers, the whole food industry – it is probably the first best “stimulus” there is.

                1. thank you for your thoughtful reply. I absolutely agree that there is a lot of propaganda on talk radio. That is why I would not listen to it even if it were available. For some reason a lot of seniors seem to fall for it.

I also agree that there are other ways other than OFA to campaign. OFA campaigns for one candidate. I am walking and campaigning for 5 candidates (1 R) and one issue. I’m not going to the same door 6 times to do that. My car is held together by bumper stickers and I have had some unfortunately disagreeable encounters with friends that have swallowed the propaganda.

Hang in there Dwyer. Most of us want the same thing, broadly speaking and we will help ALL of them if we get President Obama reelected

        1. I know a group of 70+ yr olds that respected McCain and voted McCain (ignoring Sarah factor) but are dead set against Romney/Ryan.  These folks have no problem with genuine hard won & deserved success and that is what Mitten’s is missing 100%.  They see Romney as a worse evil than anything on the Dem side.  We’ll see if they’ll walk the talk come Nov but every time Mitt talks nowadays just reveals a darker & darker prospect for the GOP.

        2. You can do something you doddering whiner if nothing else licking stamps.  Don’t give me that shit that you’re too old to participate in our democracy.  It could be a big win for progressives.  The Republicans didn’t heed the lessons of Dan Maes and tried running a clueless businessman at the national level.  This could turn into a rout and you could help if you weren’t such a political wimp.

          1. democracy is the OFA way.  How dare you assume that I am not participating in my democracy.  Shut up and walk is your way…not mine.  Evidently trying to bullying old people is also in your skill bank.  How’s that working out for you???

Licking stamps?  Bub, if you had been anywhere near  a voting center or a campaign office,  you would know that stamps haven’t been “licked” in twenty years.

  5. When you believe in nothing, this is the result. Always one more smoking gun ready to be revealed from the most recent group to whom you pandered.

What’s so amazingly stupid about this argument is that the set of people dependent on the government because of social security includes a hell of a lot of elderly voters, who in no way perceive themselves as moochers after a lifetime of work.

This is a failure to understand set theory.

Sorry that I have nothing new to add but I am just disgusted.

Mr. Romney can’t articulate the problem nor the solution and appeals instead to classist themes, and then has the gall to claim that the President’s campaign is classist. The cognitive dissonance is making me crazy and I find myself yelling at the radio.

  6. Dear Rich Guy,

What’s all the hubbub about Mitt’s comments?  He provided a real public service noting that 47% of Americans don’t pay taxes.  That’s a travesty!  I’ll bet my household help are even paid by the government what with all the tax credits they get.  Every American should pay at least the 14% that I pay, or get better accountants!

    Signed,

Taxed to Death in Cherry Hills Farms, Phase III

    Dear Phase III,

I was at that fundraiser!  Mitt has never been more articulate and passionate.  The $50,000 a plate I paid is a pittance compared to the tax break I’ll get when Mitt gets rid of the death tax and I get my inheritance from Mummy, I mean Mommy.

Now is the time to help out Mitt and Karl.  Have your accountants calculate your tax savings when Mitt is president.  Donate now so you’ll get a 15 times return on your “investment”.  This flap will blow over — they’re not even playing it on Fox.  As we all know, money does buy everything.

Oh, and you are clearly paying too much at a 14% rate.  Mitt only did that on the returns he released.  My tax guy got me down to 2% and he even deducts my trips to Geneva!

    Signed,

    Rich Guy

  7. entire life safely ensconced deep inside a very well-appointed bubble of an echo chamber, you just accept that as life as normal.

Willard honestly believes that he’s in touch with, and speaking for, “the real America.”  More’s the pity.

He truly is, in a very real sense, a victim . . . of his asshat clown party which thinks that it can endlessly foist these kind of nominees on the real American public without being noticed.

Now, just to spite all us tax-avoiding moochers, how about showing us your all of your tax returns for the last dozen years, huh Willard?

  8. … decades or Republican efforts to claim they, not the Dems, are the true friends to the working poor. He’s declaring his the party of those who pay high tax rates and “built that.”

    1. Obama’s nuts aren’t punching bags.  Hit back hard.  This is what Dwyer was bemoaning a month ago, that Obama is some sort of weak Carter squish, and that we’re losing the battle.  Not the case.

      1. I liked Obama in mid-late 2007 but was worried he’d be another Kerry/Dukakis, high-minded but unable to throw a punch — or too cocky to think he has to. I think Hillary disabused him of the notion that he could float above the fray; he and his team punch as hard as anyone — but without resorting to lies as Romney, Ryan, and the old Rove gang do (and, frankly, as Gore sometimes did).

    1. If Repubs bail on Romney and start trying to save House & Senate seats the Dems should shift their focus too and expand the number of targeted seats because they won’t have to spend that much more on the presidential campaign.  What kind of insult would it be to Romney if Obama started going to places like Massachusetts and started campaigning for down ticket races.  Take John Boehners obstructionism and shove it down his throat.  Romney is so impotent that he can’t even tie up Democratic resources pretending it’s going to be close.

  9. When Romney says that 47% of the people pay no taxes, and 47% of the people are a lock for Obama, these are not necessarily the same groups of people. The fact is there are millions of voters who don’t pay any income tax, so a promise to reduce their income tax burden doesn’t mean anything to them. It’s also true that most of the country has made up its mind, and there’s only a small number of undecided voters left. Neither of these are racist or arrogant. They’re just facts.

Democrats say the race is over every day the liberal media creates a new fake scandal. But why do the polls still show a tied race?

    1. That’s exactly what has people so offended by his remarks, you nincompoop.

      From the transcript:

Well, there are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what.  All right?  There are 47% who are with him.  Who are dependent upon government, who believe that– that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they’re entitled to healthcare, to food, to housing, to you name it.  But that’s– it’s an entitlement.  And the government should give it to them.  And they will vote for this president no matter what.

And– and– I mean the president starts off with 48%, 49%, 40– or he– he starts off with a huge number.  These are people who pay no income tax.  47% of Americans pay no income taxes.  So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect.  And he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich.  I mean that’s what they sell every– every four years.

How can you possibly read that or listen to that and not hear him equating the two groups? He says it TWICE. The people who pay no income taxes are the ones who are voting for Obama.

(Except of course for that one person who pays no income tax and is running against Obama.)

      1. to say that the groups are not the same and hope that all will forget that the candidate said that they ARE the same. ABot is actually making a smart move. But, it is far too late to try that move. You can only castle for so long before you are mated

        1. “nincompoop” hardly qualifies as an “insult” — that’s about as high a compliment as he’s ever earned here (. . . just a notch or two below his personal-best “fool” rating).

I gave him a “blithering idiot” a little further down, mostly because it’s been a pretty good day and I’m feeling kind of generous.

    2. Do you believe that saying the 47% of people who do not pay federal income tax believes that they are victims is not arrogant and insulting.

Particularly because he knows that those people include military members, seniors, and the working poor.  There’s no good way to spin out of this one.

    3. 50 years on the day shift and they think that they can just sit around now with their government-oxygen?

I bet there is a church or something that can take care of them, if not, they can mow the neighbors lawn for a few bucks!  I use to do that when I was a kid and it taught me a strong work ethic!

    4. arguing the percentages or the set theory doesn’t change the underlying tone or meaning of all that Willard said.  Blithering idiot, you think parsing over a percentage or two or five is going to make the large majority of poor, lower-income, and working-class people that Willard was crapping on with his $50,000-a-plate yacht club cronies feel that he’s really their misunderstood buddy who really does understand their situation and is on their side?  It was clearly some yacht-clubbing crony who came up with this line of defense.

That’s the best you guys got? … this one measly lame-ass excuse of an argument? … really?

      1. Me and my NASCAR-Team-owning buddies wouldn’t be caught dead–and I mean that literally–in something like that!

Now you people already have all you need to know.  Of course Ann has two Cadillacs–she needs one for our house on the East Coast and one for our house on the West Coast.

The boats are for the lake house, of course, and I like to putt around in one on Labor Day as I think about those lucky women in China fenced into their workhouses.  But hey!  I’m unemployed too!

Tuesday is laundry day, and there is nothing I like more than chasing down a fine Subway sandwich with a Big Gulp!  When I’m not eating cheesy grits or admiring the height of the trees in my other home state of Michigan.

We unloaded that little ski condo in Park City, after I saved the Olympics.  Did I mention, I saved the Olympics?

    5. … maybe because the voices in your head tell you what you want to hear? Try shutting down the voices just long enough to read the polling averages, which show a 3-4.1% lead right now.

  10. I am flabbergasted, although I never thought them very smart.  Proof is in the pudding.

Post WWII refugees from Belgium, now on SS and Medicare, of course.

The very people who owe their old age well being to the Dems and their policies.

Well, I’ll get them. In a few days my yard will host a 4′ x 8′ sign for Keith Fitzgerald, running for Congress against funding criminal and almost 1%’er Vern Buchanan.

  11. However, what he has done is expose what so many in America believe.  Romney’s gaffs are anything but.  He stated clearly what he believes and what he knows his supporters believe.  This is why Fox News works.

It saddens me to no end that people actually believe the fact that minorities and low income people are to blame for America’s financial issues.  America is failing because of greed.  Billions and Billions of dollars of greed.  It has nothing to do with $80,000 scholarship for some Black kid to go college and major in Social Science.  It has nothing to do with $50,000 we pay an enlisted soldier who is willing give up his life and family to protect those who are too important to serve.  It has nothing to do with school teacher that worked for 50 years and is now retired.

It has to do with rich and mostly white America creating legal loopholes to hide their money from paying their fair share of taxes.  It has to do with corporations getting billions in tax incentives and charging the public for more fees while collecting record profits.

Now if says if he was Mexican “this would be easier”.  As if he was Mexican he would be a Republican candidate for POTUS.  Isn’t it funny how we are now hearing about, “Welfare”. “Low Income”, “Entitlements”, “Minority Programs”, “cheaters” and “moochers”.  Yep, minorities are to blame.

I am afraid that Mitt is right with his intended audience. He is only saying these things because they are thinking these things.  And it appears that all of Fox News backs him up.

    1. It’s like racial hatred that used to be overt is now underground.

One used to be able to tell racist or anti-semitic jokes to almost anyone.  Even those offended would often give a polite chuckle.

America still has people with the same attitudes, only they are now much more careful of the circumstances when they lift a corner of their psyche.

Rmoney, with this video has not just lifted a corner, but tossed the whole bedspread.

  12. the folks bothered by this are not the folks whose votes he’s going after.

    _____

    Romney can’t win.

    mathematically impossible.

Worry more about Obama deciding to step down; that has a better chance of coming to pass.

    1. No, it won’t hurt his proverbial base.

But I think that some of those 47%’ers who were leaning Rmoney will withdraw support, even if they don’t move to Obama.

According to ABC news last night, 60% of the 47% are the working “poor,” up the %50K family income. Most of the balance are like me, living on SS.

      1. First, it was foolish to describe 47% of the population as some monolithic, lockstep group. It doesn’t matter what the particular thing it is they have in common – when it’s that large of a segment of our population, we’re speaking of something that’s merely coincidental. That means that many of these people are potential Romney voters, and many are probably even committed Romney voters.

Second, it was insulting to denigrate all these people with the worst kind of stereotype. He basically took the privileged, silver-spoon view of the urban impoverished and projected it all over an extremely large and diverse number of Americans.

Now, I agree that this won’t necessarily have a profound impact on the election. Many of those 47% are still very conservative people. I can easily believe that most of the old retired hypocrites from all the teabag rallies are part of this group, and if this has any effect on them, it will be to strengthen their resolve to vote for the GOP’s alternative*. They’re the ones who embrace these stereotypes as eagerly as the 1%ers who began this class war in the first place.

Nonetheless, this definitely has not earned Mitt any new voters. Such disdain can only alienate potential voters. Will it be enough to give the victory to Obama? Too soon to say.

What this really shows is that Mitt isn’t ready for prime time. He can’t control the campaign because he’s been too honest on camera too many times. He seems unable to roll with the punches and gets snippy when things don’t go his way (remember his terse “don’t you want to ask about the economy?” response to a local reporter asking about marijuana when he was campaigning in Colorado early this year?). The leaked speech also revealed his lack of interest in foreign policy, which is going to be the central topic of the upcoming debate in Denver. Any bets on who’s going to win that one?

        * Actually voting for Romney is distinct from voting for the GOP nominee, as it implies real support for the man. Most of these guys are voting against Obama, not for Romney.

    2. supposedly got rich by being smart with their money?   How many people can look at this video and think that a dollar spent on Willard’s campaign is still a good investment?

  13. I was more taken back with the comments about Mexicans.  How this would be easier for him if he was a Mexican and how if Mexicans and Blacks voting democratically and how damaging that would be for the nation!

I was truly expecting a Black joke next… Something like, “How many Blacks and Mexicans do you need to stop voting to win an election?”

    1. I think the Mexican comment was more offensive on some level, but 47% of the population is greater than the Latino population, and let’s face it, the majority of talking heads and editorial boards find it easier to talk about being in the 47%.
