Fox News Morphs Ex-GOP Vice Chair Into Concerned "Denver Public School Teacher"

  • by: Colorado Pols
Former Colorado GOP vice-chair Priscilla Rahn on Fox News this week as a “Denver public school teacher.”

Reporting earlier this week on the struggle faced by Denver to respond to the flood of migrants in recent months, many arriving by bus from Texas as part of that state’s controversial policy of exporting migrants to blue cities and states as political retribution for a crisis much bigger than any one state, Fox News aired an interview with an individual they billed as a “Denver public school teacher” who seemed unusually eager to assign blanket partisan political blame for the effects of the migrant influx on the city.

Readers with a good memory will know why right away:

A Denver public school teacher is sounding the alarm on the strain the migrant crisis is putting on classrooms as the city’s Democratic mayor cuts millions from services for residents.

“We are already 100 students over projection, and we have new students coming in weekly. We’re already past the October count. So every new student that we get, we don’t have the funds to provide them with resources,” teacher Priscilla Rahn told “Fox & Friends” Monday…

So first of all, if you’re getting your morning news from Fox and Friends, there’s a good chance you’re not overly interested in the details being accurate or contextual. But here in reality we’re obliged to note that Priscilla Rahn is no ordinary “public school teacher,” but rather the former vice-chair of the Colorado Republican Party who resigned last summer to run for Douglas County Commissioner. During her term as Colorado GOP vice-chair, Rahn appeared before far-right groups including the militia-linked FEC United to give her presentation warning of the dangers of “critical race theory” and other assorted forms of wokeness. Safe to say, Rahn is not representative of rank-and-file Denver Public Schools teachers.

Rahn, a candidate for Douglas County commissioner, called the cuts “incredibly unfair” for the city’s families and placed the blame directly on President Biden, Mayor Johnston and Colorado Democratic Gov. Jared Polis…

Of course she did, because even though Fox and Friends represented Rahn as a “Denver public school teacher” who just happens to be running for commish in some other county with no additional details provided, Rahn is the former vice-chair of the Colorado Republican Party–a fact completely omitted from Rahn’s appearance, not even an acknowledgment that Rahn is a registered Republican candidate running in one of the state’s most conservative counties.

Again, these are details that the average Fox and Friends viewer isn’t going to second-guess the absence of, but they’re crucial to discerning the news value of Rahn’s appearance on national cable news to bash Colorado Democrats over a crisis Republicans are wilfully refusing to address for political gain.

In this case, the total lack of news value.

  1. So Rahn would rather not educate migrant kids? Why not?

As an actual retired public school English teacher, I taught many migrant children in several districts around the state. I found that migrant kids are, in general, better behaved and more invested in education than the average native-born public school student. They understand, or their families understand, that education is the way out of poverty. Culturally, they tend to respect adults and authority figures more than their American-born counterparts. They fled criminal gangs in their homelands, and still fear and avoid gangs. It's not "cool" to be a thug. Thugs are the people who assaulted grandma and sister, who threatened to beat them up, who extorted money.

Plus, school may also be their path to healthcare and at least two healthy meals a day.

Yes, their attendance is often poor, as they get drafted to care for younger siblings or help parents translate and negotiate systems.

So yeah, I'd take a migrant kid over three  entitled, conspiracy theory-spewing Rahn Spawn.

      1. My apologies for the mushy language kw. I was trying to say that to get the interview all one had to do was be a DPS teacher. It didn't matter if she/he was representative of the majority of teachers. It wasn't meant to be disrespectful of DPS teachers.

        1. Oh, OK. Understood, GG.

I wonder if Fox and Frenzied would be interested in airing the opinions of a former ESL teacher who taught hundreds of migrant kids and adults? I volunteer.

          I miss the Fairness Doctrine.

    1. Rahn is or was a DPS teacher, per LinkedIn. Her profile says that part of her role is "creating ELA supports for all students". Given her bias against migrant kids, I have to wonder how she supports their English language acquisition. Does she stand at the front of the classroom and scream, "Speak ENGLISH or go back where you came from?" Does she turn their parents in to ICE custody? This isn't unheard of, unfortunately.

But she is running for Douglas County Commissioner, a full time paid job with a salary of ~ $120,000.   Showing crass insensitivity to the feelings of victims of a Highlands Ranch school shooter, she had a campaign meet and greet in a gun store.

Will she keep her teaching position and double dip? Resign? Fall back on Fox Frenzy for a side hustle?

  2. Rahn is another lying product of the radical right libertarian think-tank bootcamp – Leadership Program of the Rockies.

Colorado's State Policy Network affiliated think-tanks (at least one in every state, at least 7 in Colorado) are the political cabalistic sewer system.

    1. Neither Democrats nor Republicans have control or much influence on Venezuelan politics.  Both have tried and failed to do something to have the government use its resources to develop the economy, take away the power of criminals, Both have tried and failed to have other South American and Central American countries develop options for migrants which do NOT include continuing to the United States.

Neither Democrats nor Republicans have a workable plan to diminish the drug economy that fuels so much corruption.  Neither seems able to stem the flow of guns that go south.

Both Republicans and Democrats have tried to do something about the southern border.  Republicans fixated on "The Wall" and built some (blundering through a variety of laws and treaties to get it done).  Democrats had a variety of approaches.  Neither party was able to develop a bi-partisan plan to replace the "system" that everyone agrees is not working, and EVERY plan in the past decade has been sunk by some faction of the Republican party developing a claim to pressure their backers and exploit the constitutional system for governing.

So vote for whoever you please — but know that at least until there is a set of Republicans willing to resist the pressures from demagogues, the problems from the border will continue.

    2. I suspect you know as much about immigration law and policy as your red hat buddies.  But vote for whomever you wish.  Just recognize that the GOP has largely been responsible for not passing any meaningful immigration legislation since 1986, and when offered the best deal it’s been offered in decades, refused to move the legislation forward.  And of course the GOP underfunds immigration courts, which are a huge clog in the processing of asylum claims.

      1. It's been a while since we've had a right winger wander onto the site. Don't be too harsh on him/her/it. We kind of the need their feverish perspective of an alternate reality. It let's you know just how delusional their understanding of the world really is.
