No, but I have heard he is under serious consideration to be BB\’s running mate.
No. That HAS to be wrong.
I\’ve heard rumors about Rivera running for Congress since 2004, it wouldn\’t surprise me. Rivera\’s name has also been floated by the BB campaign as a potential running mate.
Either way, it sounds like Rivera is planning to move on up.
Hmm. I can see it happening. Though a lot of county repubs aren’t too happy with him based on his stance last November on C&D.

Could Governor Owens run for Lt. Gov on the Beauprez ticket? It could be a last-minute suprise in the election and explain why Beauprez is waiting so long.
Rivera is at the top of BB’s list for running mate. If Rivera did say that today he is playing hard to get for Bob.
You know that thing about Suthers running for CD 5? I didn’t believe it until today. I guess he is seriously considering it and Team Eberle are getting ready to change over to a Congressional race.

What do you mean Beauprez is “waiting so long”? It is traditional to wait to announce a running mate until after the primary. Just because Ritter and Holtzman jump the gun doesn’t mean Beauprez will make the same mistake.

Actually, Oh,Really, you can hardly say anything is “traditional” about how Colorado picks light govs. For many years, they ran as separate races. Thus, Republican John Love had two Democratic number twos, Bob Knous and Mark Hogan. Hogan once filled a vacant appointment with a Democrat while love was out of state. Love couldn’t do anything about it because Lt. Govs. have full powers if the gov is out of state. So the law was changed to run them as a tandem, but nominate them separately. That still caused missmatches Dick Lamm didn’t get along with George brown, Roy Romer disliked Mike Callihan and even though Joe Rogers helped elect Owens by drawing black cross-over voters, they didn’t get along either. So Owens had the law changed to the current system where gubernatorial candidates get to name their running mates…a system I despise as a throwback to bossism. But it has only been used once, to name Jane Norton for Owens and Bill Thiebault forRollie Heath.
Whatever Beauprez does this year, it’s only the second cycle this system has been used so whether he names him early or late it will help set a tradition, not follow or break one.
Don’t know about Rivera’s interview on radio. The gazette this morning listed him, along with Crank, Lamborn, and Anderson (already in, of course) as likely; a few others as maybe. They also listed those they had talked to who said, no, they were not running, including Suthers, Haggard, and, thank god, Bruce (R-Nut Job).
It’s going to be Lamborn v. Rivera. Lamborn will go right all the way, Rivera just a bit. Lamborn will get top line at the convention, but Rivera will probably win the primary. And, as much as I like Fawcett, Rivera will be our congressman for the next 25 years. Nice job if you can get it.
Very good histroy lesson Voyageur, Thank you. You also reminded me of a name that I’d been trying for a few days to remember: Mike Callihan.
I actually like the idea of the Gov. picking his/Her Lt. Gov. It may make for less interesting antics, but it makes for more smooth running administrations.
Philosophically, I dislike letting the gov. candidate choose his running mate, a power that should be left to the convention/primary voters. But I will admit that, in practice, presidents have this power (though not as a matter of law) and a case can be made for giving it to governors. But if we’re stuck with this system, governor candidates should name their running mates before the convention and primary, as Holtzman and Ritter have done. Owens picked Norton immediately after the primary but, after all, he had no primary opposition. I agree with Oh Really that Beauprez doesn’t have to do it now, but he should do it before the convention so we know who to vote for as delegates: Holtzman/Spradley or Beauprez/Iron Mike. I’d rather know who I’m voting for than cast a blank ballot for a player to be named later. If Iron Mike doesn’t want to run with BB ;-), then my best guess is that he picks Gigi Dennis. That clears the way for Mike Coffman to run for SOS and gives Beauprez a woman/southern Coloradan to balance his ticket.

I wasn’t talking about the traditional method of picking a running mate in Colorado. I know that is a recent change in the law (carried by Rep. Gary McPherson). I was talking about the traditional way in other races, namely US President. I think Beauprez is smart enough to know that the choice of a running mate usually doesn’t help – it frequently only hurts (remember Quayle?).
You should also double-check your assertion that Rogers brought cross-over Democratic black votes. Do you know that for a fact? My recollection after that race is that Rogers actually didn’t make any difference. (I’m not saying you are wrong – I’m asking for proof if you have it because that is not how I remember it.)
I would agree that the best ticket is Beauprez-Dennis, which solves the potential problem of a primary for SOS. Gigi is a proven vote-getter in the south and west, and that should put BB over the top.
In the Owens/Rogers vs. Schoettler/Beuscher race, we saw an increase in GOP votes for Gov. in heavily black precincts in Denver County. It was not a sharp increase, but it was enough to say that Rogers probably had some impact there.
Vikki Buckley was also on that ballot for re-election as Sec. of State. She got an even sharper rise in votes in those same precincts.
I had several black students at the time who were working hard for Rogers , and, of course, to vote for him you had to work for Owens. Remember, Owens only won by an eye lash and yes, I do think Rogers helped him. Four years later, needless to say, Owens didn’t need the help and dumped Rogers.
Bringing Coffman on would be disasterous for BB: Coffman is far more conservative than Bob. Not good situation when the LT Gov has so few legal duties.
Also, Mike won’t work for Bob since the Draft Dodger stuff came out… Remember how critical Mike has been of Tancredo?
Both Ways Bob would love to have Gigi as running mate, but I heard something happened that will keep her from accepting. She’ll be staying put and giving Mike a Primary.
Rivera is top candidate for Bob’s running mate right now. The talk about CD 5 is just talk… He’s just playing “Deal or No Deal”. The only folks who think he has a chance of winning CD 5 are DEMs.
So in other words, Voyageur, the answer is no – you don’t have any data to show that Rogers “helped elect Owens”. That’s what I thought.
