One of carpetbagging-for-dear-life Rep. Lauren Boebert’s most criticized habits in her going on four years in Congress representing the Western Slope has been her first-audacious and now doggedly insistent taking of credit with constituents in her soon-to-be former district for projects that Boebert voted against–the overwhelming majority of votes in her first term, and even with the U.S. House under narrow Republican control in the present term still a reliable “no” vote on major appropriations deals.
Yesterday, Rep. Boebert was at it again, soaking up the love for over $50 million in funding for a bridge project in Glenwood Springs:
Since this isn’t the first time that Boebert has tried to take credit for programs she voted against, sometimes getting the jump on fact-checkers, Democrats starting with Rep. Jason Crow wasted no time calling Boebert out:
Shortly afterward, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House’s official social media account joined in the dunkfest:
Eventually, Twitter’s Community Notes kicked in with the final crowdsourced word:
Boebert’s claim when pressed about the glaring contradiction is that she “supported” the specific projects in backroom discussions even though she voted against the bill containing them. But every time this has happened, by the end of a round of thoroughly negative press it’s been clear that nobody buys this convoluted excuse-making. The job of Members of Congress is to vote on legislation, and if you vote against legislation you cannot take credit after the fact for the benefits that legislation brings to your district.
The only question that remains is whether the voters in Boebert’s new district swallow the misdirection better than her old one. Boebert is counting on the much redder CO-04 primary voters either not knowing…or not caring.
