We’ve recovered enough from the initial shock to relay what the Washington Post reports from Butler, Pennsylvania:
A shooter fired multiple rounds toward the stage at a campaign rally Saturday for former president Donald Trump in what federal officials are investigating as an assassination attempt, according to two people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss it.
The shooter fired at about 6:15 p.m. “from an elevated position outside of the rally venue” in Butler, Pa., about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh, Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said in a statement. Trump put his hand to his right ear and ducked after the first of several pops. Secret Service agents surrounded him and took him off the stage, his face streaked with blood.
The shooter is dead, and Trump is safe, Guglielmi said. He added that one spectator was killed and two others were critically injured.
An incredible photo from the New York Times’ Doug Mills captures the moment ex-President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated today by a shooter whose identity and motivations remain as of this writing unknown:
Colorado elected officials suspend partisan politics to wish Trump a speedy recovery and condemn this act of political violence:
President Joe Biden’s campaign has reportedly suspended its advertising as America’s politics as usual slams the brakes to reflect–for at least the next day and a half until the Republican National Convention begins on Monday. We’ll be watching for updates to this obviously major event, and while we welcome discussion of the story as it develops we reiterate the call for civility and respect for the common values that define us as Americans. If that doesn’t move you, follow the rule of not saying anything you wouldn’t say with your boss and/or mother in the room.
And if a prayer for the national interest is something you think would help, tonight seems like a good night for that.

To temper those calls that we should treat this differently then all of the other shootings that take place. It should be noted the way Trump personally treated the victims of political violence.

News reports seem to indicate the shooter was a messed up kid (20 years old) from rural Pennsylvania. I suspect he was an avid fan of first person shooter games. And in rural Pennsylvania, according to a friend who grew up there (Slippery Rock, PA), guns and hunting are as common as water. That it was an AR-15 used to commit this crime will not phase the NRA and their ilk unfortunately.
Having grown up in the '60s through multiple political assassinations, I am shocked to see it may be rearing it's ugly head again. I hope the Secret Service's immediate successful response will discourage any future attempts. I can't say how proud I am of the brave members of the Secret Service protecting Trump. The 400 to 500 foot distance probably saved Trump's life, but the Secret Service will likely need to extend the protective envelope in future outdoor events. Their ability to respond and eliminate the threat within a minute or two is astonishing. The innocent bystanders caught in the middle is tragic.
I want Trump to be defeated by Americans voting at the ballot box — not by some deranged gunman.
Yeah, unity and civility and all that, but Lauren Boebert is officially a piece of **** for what she said last night:

Bless her pea-pickin' heart. What a fool.
This is one of the best posts on the subject I've seen today.
Trump will get a bump from this and from the RNC. By Friday he will have a commanding lead in the race. Joe Biden will not be able to deny this reality. He said he would drop out if that were the case.
Democrats must reset this election starting on Friday. A new nominee must be picked who has earned the nomination. I believe the Democrats should hold a series of 5 or 6 debates involving any serious contender including Biden if he wishes. Let them make their case that they are the strongest candidate. Release the pledged delegates to the DNc and let them decide. Whoever emerges from this process will be viewed to have earned the nomination. (I suspect
Kamala Harris would be the winner.)
This is the only way forward to have any chance of winning in November.
reset, not rest
Fixed, thanks.
Do you agree?
Frank Luntz disagrees with you.
Me? I got no idea how this will impact the campaign, just like I had no idea in 2016 how a videotaped admission of a casual practice of grabbing pussy would impact a campaign. Or how people would respond in 2020 to
The last two elections were decided by margins of fewer than a total 100,000 votes in 3 or 4 states. Had half that number switched, we would have had different Presidents.
The person with the best prediction record I know about (9 of 10 elections, only wrong on the 2000 Bush “victory”) says
I don’t know if we should consider things that happened in recent months “a lot” going wrong, It is ENTIRELY possible. But EVERYTHING about this campaign has been “too much” and “too different” to be certain of anything.
Frank Luntz is one of the least credible human beings on planet Earth.
The cynic in me believes that Trump and his allies will use this to claim all critics of Trump are dangerous and that the media will go along with it and even support it for the sake of "coming together". It seems that the background we have so far of the shooter suggests it's your standard unstable nut but that won't matter. All critics will be told to shut up now and nagged to vote for Trump because he's just a precious peaceful soft-spoken man who just wants us to come together and live in harmony but is being targeted by those mean critics that made this happen somehow.
Ok, I must share a dreaded theory of what may happen now because of this. Now that Trump, Republicans, and the media have a perfect excuse to smear all critics and blame them for this regardless of facts, they expect Trump to win now and perhaps that the GOP will gain a trifecta in 2024. Afterwards, the GOP have a perfect excuse and sympathy among voters to start supressing critics and politicial rivals in earnest. With a trifecta and Trump bringing in loyalists regardless of competence, we will witness sham investigations, misinformation and propaganda which will see anyone critical of Trump somehow be implicated in a conpiracy against him. The GOP was already obsessed with the idea of a “deep state” that wants Trump taken down. This event is the perfect excuse to say it was all true and start implicating people they don’t like. This event will be cited as justification enough regardless of the facts.
I repeat.
Today and tomorrow will be crucial to controlling the narrative prior to the RNC. If GOP goes into the RNC owning the narrative, it's over. Democrats have expressed their concern for the former President, as they should have. Now, we must make this about gun safety and common sense gun laws rather than allow Trump to play the martyr or the tough guy who stood up to an assassination attempt and does NOT fear streets full of guns.
Seems more and more like a false-flag set-up for Trump.
What makes you think that?
Experience and research surrounding and following seven business trips to Russia, all in the post-Soviet era, beginning in 1994. Because of that exposure to Russia, just thinking that the whole shooting scenario is not passing the “smell test.” The other gentleman who was killed could have been collateral damage; condolences to his family. Accounts so far indicate the shooter was a deeply troubled young man. Reminds one of the then 17 year old angry, far right, young man, Rittenhouse, who killed several people in Kenosha. Wouldn’t take much to set off such a shooter, especially one with an AR-15. As for Trump, tracking off & on since he first broke into the New York City party and night club scene in the 1970s (he was hard to miss).
I don't think Trump has the cojones to give a speech as calmly as he did, knowing he'd be shot at. And he seemed genuinely shocked. Athough that bit with the pumping fist, yelling , "Fight! Fght!" did seem contrived.
No the shooter saw his opportunity ( the confused , inadequate security) and took it, whatever his motivation turns out to be.
