UPDATE #5: We called it on the latest episode of the Get More Smarter Podcast. Here’s the clip:

—–

UPDATE #4: Rep. Diana DeGette of Denver comes out fighting:

—–

UPDATE #3: Here’s a handy roundup of J.D. Vance’s past quotes on Donald Trump from Fox News that you’ll most likely never see again:

—–

UPDATE #2: Ex-President Donald Trump officially announces Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his vice presidential pick:

—–

UPDATE: It’s looking like Vance. It is being reported that both Burgum and Rubio have been informed that they are NOT being selected.

—–

The Republican National Convention is underway in Milwaukee and appears set to begin with some big news. Soon-to-be official Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump says that he will unveil his choice for a running mate and Vice Presidential candidate today.

It was reported last week that Trump had narrowed the list down to a final three of either North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum; Florida Sen. Marco Rubio; or Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance. NBC News reports that Trump indicated over the weekend that South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott is also in the running. Trump also apparently hinted that it could be someone who has not been part of recent media speculation.

We’ll update this post when the announcement is finally revealed and/or leaked.

  1. For a while, I assumed it would be Vance or Burgum, but now I am rethinking. Trump is nothing if not a huge ego. Does he want anyone with any charisma or intelligence? Or will he pick someone that no one has heard of or cares about so that he does not have to share the spotlight?

  2. So if it's Vance, which seems likely since Rubio and Borglum got the "Not You" call,  Republican Ohio Governor Dewine would pick Vance's replacement in the Senate.

Would Vance have to pre-emptively resign from the Senate to run as Veep? or not until after the election, if ( Goddess forbid it)Trump is re-elected? Is Gov Dewine a MAGA follower or an old-school Law and Order Republican?

      1. Other GOP governors did just as well as Dewine in trying to handle COVID in their states: Scott (VT), Sununu (NH), Baker (MA), Hogan (MD). Of course, you won't find Desantis, Abbott, or their like among those quality GOP governors.

Shortly before the pandemic, I read somewhere that Charlie Baker was the most popular governor in the country. Baker did not run for re-election in 2022. He had become a popular target for the limited number of MAGAs in Massachusetts.

      2. DeWine is a conservative, and when I look at what he has done, he's slightly more culturally conservative than his predecessor (Gov. Kasich),

He is a former US House member, then Lt. Gov., then US Senator for 2 terms (until beaten by Sherrod Brown), Ohio AG for 2 terms, and then Ohio Governor.  Re-elected in 2022. In that campaign, Ballotpedia summarized his themes as

DeWine listed bringing a $20 billion Intel Semiconductor Factory project to Ohio, enacting tax reductions, increasing manufacturing jobs, reducing drug crime, and investing in career education and job training as accomplishments of his gubernatorial administration.[2] DeWine's campaign website also said he "has governed as a compassionate conservative.

His "pro-life" agenda expanded to what he did about COVID — a long mask mandate and a long stay-at-home mandate.  Those moves were long enough "the Ohio General Assembly passed a law limiting executive powers related to health orders."

    1. Would Vance have to pre-emptively resign from the Senate to run as Veep? or not until after the election, if ( Goddess forbid it)Trump is re-elected?

Nope, Vance is running from cover. His Senate term runs until Jan. 2029, and he's free to continue if PAB loses.

If PAB wins, GOP Gov. Mike DeWine will pick Vance's Senate successor, who will serve until a special election is held in 2026.

    1. Birds of a feather, y'know. It takes a punk-ass bitch to know one. Vance has demonstrated his craven fealty to his Master and the Fourth Reich sufficiently to join the family..

      1. I've seen a couple of mentions that Don Jr. was one of the inner circle pushing JD Vance …

There may be something to it — Trump the President had a long-standing bias against facial hair, and now, his VP AND his son are showing up with similar-looking beards.

        JR.:  https://www.trump.com/leadership/donald-trump-jr-biography

          https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/4697123-vance-cnns-blitzer-tangle-over-trumps-fascist-state-remark/

  3. Primary reason is that Vance is an angry White guy spouting Trump's favorite fascist lines.

Secondary reason is that Vance has won a statewide race in Ohio, and has strong name-recognition.

  4. As he ran for Senate in 2022, a headline on the issues section of his campaign website read simply: “Ban Abortion.”

    Abortion, abortion, abortion

  5. "Vance has won a statewide race"
So did Burghum, Rubio, Noem, Scott, Cruz, and any number of other names that were tossed around at one point or another. For that matter, so did Pence, but I don't think he's under consideraion this time around.

    1. The Yam tried milquetoast (or so he thought). This time he decided to try a firebrand. I don’t see that working out much better. Pence’s spine grew in at the last minute. I won’t be surprised if Vance’s turns to cooked spaghetti.
