Scott Bottoms Blames the FBI for Trump Assassination Attempt, Because of Course He Does

The Colorado Republican Party is not exactly rife with rocket surgeons these days.

The Party itself is spiraling into new depths with its escalating calls for things that Republicans must oppose, which includes stuff like “schools” and other basic things like “laws.” A sizable chunk of Colorado Republicans would like to remove Dave Williams as State Party Chair, but nobody seems able to figure out how to do that. And the people seen as “leaders” of the GOP in Colorado insist on saying batshit crazy things, out loud, as often as possible.

As 9News reports, State Rep. Scott “There is No” Bottoms (R-Colorado Springs) — a close supporter of Williams — is once again letting his mouth go places that logic can’t follow:

A Republican state legislator known for his outlandish and offensive statements is claiming that the FBI was behind the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

State Rep. Scott Bottoms (R-Colorado Springs) did not offer any evidence to support the claim, which he made last Sunday from the pulpit of his Church at Briargate, where he is the lead pastor.

“I believe it’s the FBI,” Bottoms told parishioners. [Pols emphasis]

“I’m not talking about the Democratic Party,” Bottoms said. “I’m talking about the people that are controlling our country. The people that have been controlling the FBI, controlling the State Department.”

Bottoms said the only reason the FBI plot didn’t kill Trump is because the former President is protected by God.

“This is just the beginning,” Bottoms said. “They need that man dead.”

Who, exactly, is “they”? Who knows? The Deep State lizard people, perhaps.

Bottoms also blamed the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection on the FBI. In other words, he’s getting kinda lazy with his conspiracy theories.

Here’s that segment from last night via Kyle Clark of 9News, who calls it “fresh nuttery”:

During his “sermon,” Bottoms also went back to a topic that he brings up often:

Bottoms claimed, without evidence, that the November presidential election will not be held if Trump is not killed by then.

“We’re not gonna have a presidential election,” Bottoms said. “If he’s still alive and he’s not in jail, we’re not gonna have an election.”

This is a slight variation on something that Bottoms has been saying since at least last October. We’re excited to see what Bottoms has to say when the United States does, in fact, hold an election in November 2024. Perhaps he will immediately pivot to saying, I meant that the United States wouldn’t have an election in November 2026This is what the “end of days” preachers always have to do when the days don’t actually, you know, end.

[BTW: To the sheep in Bottoms’s flock: If there isn’t going to be an election in November, maybe you don’t need to vote!]

The other interesting thing about Bottoms’s claim is that he is actually proposing something that is somehow DUMBER than what Congressperson Lauren Boebert is saying. And that’s pretty hard to do.

Earlier this week — before she filed her idiotic legislative proposal to fix Secret Service management by not paying them — Boebert had been suggesting that it was the Secret Service that was trying to assassinate Donald Trump rather than a troubled 20-year-old kid from a hard-right MAGA family.

Boebert’s idea is also a silly thing to say, but at least the Secret Service was actually involved with the Trump rally in Pennsylvania where the shooting occurred. Bottoms might as well propose that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is plotting to kill the Republican Presidential nominee.

Anyway, if you’re ever wondering why Republicans have a micro-minority caucus in the State House of Representatives, just listen to Bottoms say words for a few minutes. You will wonder no more.

  1. Funny.  FBI is DOJ and Secret Service (funny how we don't abbreviate that) is DHS.  FBI not in charge of protecting presidential candidates.  But Scott "the" Bottom, appears to have special, insider's info.  Like Joe McCarthy's list of names.
