Hickenlooper Sounding Like a Candidate for Governor

From The Rocky Mountain News:

John Hickenlooper loves being Denver’s mayor. But he said Friday he has concluded he could have “greater impact” as governor.

Hickenlooper stopped short of making a formal announcement to run, but his spontaneous revelation during an affordable housing conference led many in the audience to infer that he has decided he can do the most for Colorado as governor.

“I don’t think the governor’s job could be as much fun as the mayor’s job,” Hickenlooper said after an audience member asked if he will run for governor. “But I do believe now it probably has greater impact. You know, my plan was only to give 10 or 15 years to public service. If you’re going to look at it that way, you should probably try to be as useful and have (the) maximum impact as you can.

“So it’s a balancing act of what you love and what you know (in the mayor’s role) vs. maybe having more impact in a different place,” Hickenlooper continued.

The mayor vowed to make the decision soon on the question people have been asking nonstop for nearly two months: whether he’ll run or not. “Certainly within the next few days I promise we will get it figured out,” Hickenlooper said. “I know people are sick of talking about it.”

The mayor’s off-the-cuff comments came while taking questions following a brief address at the housing conference sponsored by the University of Denver and held at the Police Protective Association center.

The remarks caused a stir in the audience. Several attendees told reporters they interpreted Hickenlooper’s comments as meaning he is leaning toward running. “I think he put more than a toe in the water. I think he’s up to his patella – that’s the kneecap,” said City Councilman Charlie Brown, who was among several council members in attendance.

  1. What happens if Ritter has voicemail messages from Hick indicating that he was not running?  Does this disclosure hurt Hock’s well deserved reputation for straight talk and being a non-politician?  Can Ritter even use this kind of tactic without looking like a whiner?

  2. Interesting that this article (which makes it appear as though Hick is in) appears in COPols, and yet the article from Thursday (where Hick says it would be “lunatic” to run) doesn’t.

ColPols is a default campaign site for Hick.

  3. Until Hickenlooper announces, there was nothing else for Ritter to say but that he was in to stay but quite simply he will have an impossible task in the caucuses, assembly and primary.

Ritter has no base among Democratic activists, no group of Democrats who have reason to prefer him over Hickenlooper and he would be steamrolled if he stayed in the race.  Any hope that Ritter had of winning a general election campaign for Governor will be even stronger as an Attorney General candidate.  For selfish practical reasons Ritter will have no choice but to move over for Hick after Monday.

  4. Well, if Hick is so strong, why all the pushing of Ritter off to the side?

Hickenlooper is sounding more like Hillary Clinton every day.

One thing about the Hick shills, they’re consistent in trying to give Ritter the ‘Nita Lowey’ treatment.

Trying to throw Ritter the bone known as the AG (as though it were somehow guaranteed) isn’t going to play well in a general election.

You Hick shills have already sworn in Hick and he hasn’t even announced his decision.

  5. Ritter does not have an activist base?  Are you from Denver; where smoking that stuff is still illegal?  Correction, he does not have the “Be the Change” base; however he does have the Salazar type base.  Look at his endorsements; Webb, Carrigan, Jahn, Baca these are nobody?s in the Democratic Party.  Hick has a lot of baggage that will hurt him.  By the way; Mike Miles lost the last election.  Correction, he got killed in the primary.  I hate reminding others of historical documented facts.

  6. “What happens if Ritter has voicemail messages from Hick indicating that he was not running? “

I figure Hick says “I considered it further and listened to the arguments of X and talked to Y, and changed my mind.”

I think you can change your mind, once.  You just can’t pretend you never held the other point of view, or go back and forth.

  7. Re the ‘voice mail’: In the race, out of the race, in the race, … wasn’t that Gary 20 years or so ago …  Issue 2: So who does Bob & team fear more … the yet tested small bus pub owning mayor or the union guy, farm-boy x-DA?

  9. Hey Cuba……….you’ve been awful quiet since your pro Hick and (gag) Hillary rants of last week.
What’s up? Cat got your tongue?
Or are you still in mourning?
