  1. Worthwhile read and clear-eyed analysis of Putin’s Russia.

Putin says he saved Russia, but a year of challenges suggests Moscow’s position is precarious

Things aren’t quite as rosy as Putin would like people to think, most of all, his own citizens.

The country’s sanctions-battered economy is under severe strain, with annual inflation approaching 10 percent. The Russian Central Bank last week opted to hold its key interest rate at a staggering 21 percent — only after Putin publicly called for a “balanced decision” following widespread predictions of a two-percentage-point hike.

The dream job floated to Russian youths is no longer software development. Instead, they are encouraged to pursue positions in “new and promising areas,” such as working on drone assembly lines.

“Still thinking about going to the 10th grade? Join the super elite course at Alabuga Polytechnic Institute to study aerial navigation and drone programming,” pitched an ad for a Tatarstan-based industrial hub that employs students to build Iranian-designed self-detonating drones.

Putin, faced with a declining population and the added demographic peril of deploying tens of thousands of young men to the front lines, away from their wives, has found a new fixation: employing every possible incentive to persuade women to give birth early and often.

A local version of an MTV reality show, “16 and Pregnant,” created in the 2000s, was originally intended as a cautionary tale against teenage pregnancy and drew the ire of authorities, who sought to ban it for purportedly promoting promiscuity.

That changed in 2024. The show was renamed “Mom at 16” and began to sugarcoat the challenges of raising a child as an impoverished teenager, instead emphasizing the “beauty of motherhood.”

They need more cannon fodder. Even the North Korean soldiers are dying too fast, as they are sent in human waves into Ukrainian guns. WWI trench warfare tactics!

      1. He is a dangerously demented genius.  His promotion of flat-out lies and misinformation, not to mention his spreading of hate is inexplicable to me.  As a Tesla owner, space enthusiast and believer in free speech, it pains me to see the damage his is doing with much worse yet to come.

          1. I agree he's a terrible person, but after reading Walter Issacson's biography of him, perhaps he's more of a Thomas Edison than a Nikola Tesla.  He studied Physics and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. But he not only attracts brilliant engineers to work for him, he goes toe-to-toe with them in design sessions.  I'd almost go with the archaic term "Idiot Savant".  His personality and politics are his idiot half expressing himself.

        1. Posted without additional commentary from me:

One person is dead and at least seven people are injured after a Cybertruck exploded outside of a Trump hotel in Las Vegas, the police said.

  2. Since it’s a open thread, have there been any coverage past local of the recent homophobia from the Colorado GOP? This piece from the Durango Herald discusses the recent but very much bigoted threats of the Colorado GOP towards the Durango school district over a proposal to allow representative flags or symbols for staff and students. The screed by the COGOP to the school is uttlerly insane and calls the proposal and supporters of it pedophiles and sexual fetishists along with a dash of racism added in with buzzwords like “anti-white”. The GOP also went on about it being “anti-Christian” or something but haphardly added in “and other religions” as a afterthought at the end of that to hide the fact they only care about conservative Christians.

Here’s my view, I don’t agree with the proposal in principle for reasons not related to hating the gays but I now do support it becasue it’ll make the homophobic nuts mad. Also, with the finacial bleeding the state GOP is going through, is wasting money on suing a school for being ok with the gays and non-whites really a smart decision? Talk about choosing their battles. They truly don’t act like they need money at all for other more important duties and aren’t a poliitcal minority desperate to be relevant.

    1. If the Durango school district has policies like most other Colorado school districts, the "symbol" in question is a decal of a rainbow triangle which declares that that classroom or office is a safe space  for LGBTQ students, (since the triangle contains a rainbow).

Many LGBTQ students found that having just one teacher or adult in their life that accepted them for who they were made the difference between sanity and suicide. I sponsored a gay-straight alliance club in a high school for years, and heard this from students. Apparently, the, Durango GOP homophobes don't care about this.
